Hi all :)

Congratulations to all of you here now as PARENTS!...wow. I think that is the neatest thing ever that we can all say we made it through and we're all blessed with beautiful children.

So I think I'm in the same boat as many of you - colic. McKenna cries most of the time when she's awake. In Canada we have very little as far as remedies for this go. My doctor said try gripe water...I haven't tried it yet - but I've tried Ovol drops and another drop called Kolik. The Kolik seems to work the best but still not great. She's also got the baby acne as well....poor girl. They say it's the hormones in our breast milk that do it. But - they say colic passes...by about 3 months...:). Every time I get frustrated and sad with her crying I just tell myself...hey - this is a miracle baby - just be there for her :)....

Anyways, congrats again everyone - It's great we can offer each other advise and support as our little ones go through all of these stages.

hi all you new mummies
I hope you don't mind me butting in i just thought i could pass on a few tips for helping babies with colic. But firstly my son cryed a good majority of the day from wind pain Jacobs 2and a half months now and his colic seems to be passing so yes things do get better I was given a few suggestions which have really helped I thought you guys might be interested
1stly make sure you burp bub in the middle of their feed and after really well sometimes bouncing them sitting on your knee gently while patting their back really helps
If having trouble getting the wind out lay bub for 10 mins on their right side and then try to burp againas this pushes the wind in the right direction
Rub belly gently in a clockwise direction again to help move the wind the direction has to do with the way their intestines go
Bicycle actions with their legs sometimes helps to move the wind when to far down
I was also told that when wind is to far down sometimes it's best to give a little feed to hopefully push the wind the rest of the way through
30 to 60 mls of boiled water has been the best relief but not given to often for littler bubs i was recommended once maybe twice a day.
And if none of these work check out your local chemist or doc for wind drops . i hope some of this helps you ladies it's so much nicer when bub isn't crying in pain for them and for your own sanity goodluck all.

Fantastic advice! Thank you!

I was/am beginning to think Isabella might be colicky as well....but the midwife has assured me she is just hungry! We have been have non-stop feeding sessions..yesterday one lasting 4 hours! Because I am no producing enough milk she is also taking the bottle...but it is hard to tell how much milk she is actually taking in and if she is getting enough with each feeding...sometimes she drinks too much and ends up being down my back  We may start doing 'Breast feeding tests'..so I will have to weight her before and after each BF session. How about hiccups..anyone get lots of hiccups as well?

Yesterday was a super long day...Isabella as awake more then asleep..and crying for food everytime I put her down. We did manage to go to the pharmacy to pick up the 'super pump' (first car ride with just mommy) and then after for a very short walk.

How is everyone else managing to getting out and about? I find there is absolutely no schedule....when the baby is sleeping I bundle her up and head out the door as quickly as possible  ...sometimes this process can last hours!

hi Traci
I just read your post you can tell if bub is getting enough by the colour of her urine, babies wee should be clear or have little colour if it's bright yellow they may need more fluids and of course if they are putting on weight. Do you guys mind me joining you theres not really a september babies thread or one that gets used and I thought I could help answer some of the questions that arise as dh and i may have either been through them or are in the middle of them i know Ive appreciated all the tips I could get. But if thats not ok just let me know .

hi
sorry the last post should read

If the babies are NOT putting on weight then they are not getting enough.

Hi Jomae - Please join us! Isabella was weighed today and she is above her birthweight..the midwife is very happy and she has grown a cm. I have a new fancy pump so we can better tell how the milk production is doing.

How is everyone else?

Hey everyone. I'm having a stressful day with my boys. They have been so fussy lately and they want constant attention. With two babies and my husband out of town for a couple of days, I have my hands full. Good advice on the wind because Tyler is having that problem too. He's having trouble eating (breastfeeding and bottle) because of it. It's hard for me to work with him alone while I have Brady to handle too.

Today they both cried and fussed for 5 hours straight (which included two feedings). Oh well, it will pass. Like my friend said to me "luckily there's only 24 hours in a day". Tomorrow is a new day.

On the bright side, they are growing and changing like crazy. They had their 2 month old check and Tyler now weighs 8 lbs 15 ozs and Brady weighs 8 lbs 9 ozs.

Sounds like everyone is having some of the same challenges!

Kristi - We are in the same boat..Isabella being fussy - hungry and I think overtired alot. Yesterday we set the record with 6 hours..I thought I would never get her to sleep and I was at my wits end....I tried everything..breast, bottle (already having fed her for 5 hours), cuddling, new diapers, singing...finally after a crying spell she took one last time to my breast and then fell asleep. I was exhausted witha huge headache...even the dogs kept giving me dirty looks. DH is also out of town and will return tonight. It must be really difficult with 2...and you are right today is a new day.

So Isabella also has a 6th sense of just when I am about to eat...she wakes up! I haven't had a warm meal since she came home...good way to get the pregnancy pounds off!

Despite lack of sleep, hungriness and a headache - I plan to enjoy every minute with my little miracle.

Hello Traci and KristiA,
Wow sounds like you both have your hands full I can certainly sympathise we to had a phase where it felt like bub new exactly when I wanted to eat rest or even pee which to him meant it's time to cry. It can become so frustrating especially when you are so sleep depreprived but thankfully things get better. KrisitiA firstly congratulations on your twins I was pregnant with twins but lost one early on so youv'e done well are your boys sleeping through the night yet. Jacob started sleeping from 6.30 /7.00 at night to 5.30 /6.00 in the morning about 2 weeks ago now which is a god sent you can really function so much better on a good nights sleep. Can you get your family, friends or even your neighbours to give you a bit of a hand while hubby is away. Traci your poor dogs there probably thinking whats this noisey thing you've brought home and when will you send it back how have they been with bub our dogs are so placid I don't need to worry about them but you hear of pets getting their noses out of joint when a new bub is brought home. Anyway I've rambled enough so I'll be off. Oh Jacob laughed a real laugh last thursday he sounded so gorgeous it makes it all worth it when they start smileing and laughing.

Hi All --

Jomae - great to have you on the thread. We will look to you as the resident expert since your little one is the oldest :D How'd you get yours to sleep through the night?

Tracii - I had to laugh about the dogs giving you dirty looks. I can just imagine  As for the warm meals, DH and I end up eating in shifts, reheating dinner, etc. We joke that Hendricks smells the food and wants to join in.

KristiA - I don't know how you do it. Sometimes having just one is a huge challenge. I often wonder how I would be coping with twins if my little Baby A was still with us. You must have the patience of a saint.

Hendricks woke up at 4:30 this morning ready to play. I, however, was not ready to play! I feel so guilty when I get frustrated, but it is reassuring to see that I'm not the only one feeling this way or facing these challenges. Thanks ladies for talking about some of the trying times, as well as the happy moments.

Well, so much for today being a new day. It was a repeat of yesterday, only worse. ha ha. Julie, mine woke up early this AM to "play" too. Then ended up screaming for hours. For the first time ever I let one of them scream in their crib for 20 minutes until he fell asleep. It killed me, but I didn't know what else to do. Tracii, sounds like the same kind of day you had too, huh?

Jomae, how do you get yours to sleep that much in the night???????????? We all want to know. Mine only sleep 2 hours at the most. I have 4 feedings during the sleeping hours (10PM-8AM). And with two babies the feedings take about 1.5 hours each time.

One of my babies has gas/constipation so the doctor told me today to try giving 1 oz of apple juice mixed with 1 oz of water twice a day. You should have seen the look on Tyler's face when he drank it. It was priceless. I am also giving them both gas drops (infant antacid).

I have to admit that I bought a box of rice cereal while I was buying the apple juice. I don't plan to use it yet, but my doctor did say if I really wanted to try one spoon of it before bed to help them sleep longer I could. But of course they recommend to wait until 4 months. I'm at 2 months now...so I'll probably stick it out.

Hi everyone,
Thanks EYCI it's great to be welcomed I've been hanging around the boards for a while waiting for more of the third trimester mummies to give birth so the parenting board would get some conversation happening it's was so quiet before hand so thankyou for the welcome. As for your question about the sleep 1stly i was unable to feed Jacob for more than a week so he's bottle fed and being on formula I have heard that babies sleep better because you know for sure they are getting enough but don't quote me on that. Basically through the day if the four hour feed time came around i would wake Jacob to give him his feed (if I was lucky enough to get him to sleep)which in my theory was to help establish a routine but through the night obviously to encourage longer sleep patterns i would not wake him and therefor let him tell me when he was hungry in the beginning his last feed was between 10 and 11.30pm and he started by going roughly 5and half hours with out a feed and then one night he didn't wake at all for his 10.30 feed and I didn't wake him for it to see if he really wanted or needed it he slept through to 4.30am approximately. from then on i worked his feeds for a couple of days so his last feed would fit in just before I wanted to go to bed about 8.00pm and hoped he'd still sleep through.I do make sure that he fits all the feeds recommended for his age in through the day so he's getting enough I now have to wake him around 8pm for his last feed which is great.I also make sure his last feed for the night is a little bigger than the others to hopefully cover him a little longer and that his first feed in the morning is a bit bigger because he has had a long break but other that it's just luck. oh Ive also put him into his own room now I think when he was in the bassinett beside me he would only be stiring and i would think he was hungry because i was laying awake anticipateing his next feed when really he was just stirring and would go back to sleep but now that doesn't happen. Generally babies start sleeping through at approx 8 weeks but this time frame will vary.
You guys will get there once your able to establish a routine and you get to identify what their little and big cries mean and once baby gets to know the pattern of the day also everthing will smooth out. Soon you'll be able to work it so you can have those meals while they are still warm and actually get some rest yourselves. I watched a great show on the baby listener last night where this women claims babies are talking to you already and how you can identify what they are asking for with the sounds they make for eg if you can hear the word Neh (sounded as Nair) in the little cry or pre cry as she calls it then it means bub is still hungry I'll post a bit more about it later if anyones interested I've rambled long enough already.

Take care all have a great weekend

Hi all,

Been meaning to post for days and never really got around to it. I felt a bit guilty posting because i have postnatal depression and felt so low, glad to say i am now starting to feel better, it just took me by surprise how low i felt, when i knew Jessica was much wanted and longed for.

So sorry loads of you have colicky babies, i don't know how you cope. jess has a slight problem bring up the wind and wriggles about because she is uncomfortable but other than that she's fine, i just give her infacol before her feed and sit her up straight and she brings the wind up (mostly!!!)

got to dash of to my friends, take care

love

Hello everyone,

It is so great to read all your posts. I am now feeling human again and very excited about finally being allowed to drive again.

So pleased to read that others are experiencing the same things as me. It is the crying that wears you down but i keep saying to myself, she can't talk so this is her only way of communicating. I then take a deep breath and go through the list - hungry, dirty, cold, hot, overtired or just fed up!

Does anyone have any tips on helping them settle between 7pm and 10pm. This seems to be the hard time of day for her, i would love a meal where i don't feel guily as i have turned the monitor off so i can't hear her crying while i bolt my dinner. All hints welcome.

Very comforted by the thought that she might sleep through soon, a stretch of 6 - 8 hours sleep will be heaven. I get excited if i have had 5 hours at night in a row. I feel for you Kristia, how do you cope during the day?! I would be a dribbling wreck.

Take care everyone

Love Saraid

Ps: pleased that you are doing better Sue, post natal depression must be miserable
