Jo, Sher and Susie,
Thank you for your responses..and thanks for saying it'll settle down- definitely eases my mind..I have visions of her being a 4 yr old and crying each time she wants to poo

Jo,
My little one seems to be a lot like what you have said about Tilly, so thats a relief!Last night she was up until 3.30 am and crying each time before she poo-ed which was so sad for me to watch as i felt quite helpless..I totally agree about them being un-ladylike!!

Any idea if its something in my diet which causes this? as shes only on breast feed now..
I am a vegetarian, and am not even taking eggs as theres a bird-flu scare happening here..

take care all,
smita

hi to fellow mummies (and daddies) and apologies for not being on for so long. in truth i am so busy with Ned and trying to get settled in a new village that i rarely have time to do anything else other than scan the boards for new arrivals!

congratulations to all the new arrivals since i was last on. it sounds like everyone is doing brilliantly. i love having Ned around and have so far felt pretty relaxed with things. it has really helped that my dh only works three days a week so he is around a lot to offer support. with each new obstacle to attempt (such as first trip to shops etc) i have just taken the view that if things get tricky i will turn round and come home again! so far though we havent had a problem.

ned is now 8 weeks and wonderfully alert. he smiles and is beginning to really gurgle. he is very calm throughout the day and sleeps quite a lot still which gives me time to get on with things. in the evenings though he is much harder to settle. i have a bathtime routine which helps a bit but he is incredibly hard to settle in his cot and i have begun to try leaving him to cry for some time after which he does get to slweep. he only sleeps for an hour max though before we have to start the whole hing again. we are now adding a bottle of formula at night (i breastfeed rest of time) so that i know he is full. he tends ro sleep from about midnight to half three or four after which he comes into our bed and sleeps soundly until just after seven. any ideas about settling him in the evening and getting him to sleep woould be much appreciated. how long do you all let yours cry?? i find the whole dilemna about incorporating a routine really difficult as my gut feeling is that he is too young to get too fixed on it...

would love to hear more about how you are all getting on. sounds as though we are all truly besotted though!

love to all.

Hello Minnow,

Well I just read your post and I can sooo relate to what you are talking about. Siena is soon to be six weeks old. She was sleeping in our bed the entire evening and then I got the urge to try and transition her to her baby crib this week. It was grueling the first night - woke up every hour to feed. Then on the second night I decided to give formula when we would initally put her down. (I see that you got the same idea as well!) On formula, Siena slept 2 1/2 hours, but very sound. She then got up three or four more times. Funny thing is when I breastfeed her it takes her a little longer to settle in. She makes lots of gurgles, coos and short cries until she is out. I try to make her day a little busy without overstimulating her and we bathe her in the evenings. I read routine is what babies like so I am trying to build one. I'm going into night 3 of getting her to sleep in her crib. I am glad she is accepting it and hope to get a few more hours of shut eye. Right now it seems I am up every 1 1/2 - 2 hours and this probably will not change for awhile. From what I have read, it is not until they are on solids do they sleep longer (4-6 months). It is nice that you have your husband there for support. I find that really helps a lot. I am finding it is trial and error and no two days are the same. It is just good to know that we are all experiencing the same concerns for our little ones.

Take Care,
Sher8

Hi Minnow

I found the Gina Ford 'The new contented baby book' a real help when settling DD into a routine. You are either a great fan of this book or are totally against it - my view is to read the book and use her advice together with your own common sense (some of it is a bit over the top for a little baby).

I demand fed and slept Amelia for the 1st five weeks and then used the feeding routine in the book advised for 6 week old babies. I paid lip service to the sleeping routine as Amelia slept loads more than recommended in the book (for example, babies should only sleep from 9.00am to 9.45am - at 6 weeks DD would sleep from 8.00 am until 10.30 am)!

I used the 'controlled crying' technique to settle her at 7.00pm and although heartbreaking, it only took 3 nights of crying (maximum 40 mins) for her to settle and sleep - have not had a problem with her settling herself to sleep since then (at any time of the day or night).

Always worried that she would not go back to sleep after the 10.00pm feed but to my surprise it worked - it never seemed right to wake a sleeping baby!

She is still totally satisfied with breast milk and currently sleeps from 7.00pm to 7.00am with a very sleepy feed and nappy change at 10.30pm - I am planning to slowly cut out this feed after 16 weeks.

I feel that getting babies to sleep longer during the night is more dictated by how much they feed during the day rather than sleep.

Hope some of this info helps.

Kind regards
Caroline

Hi everyone

Minnow - Great to hear from you. Good to hear things are going ok. Hope the night times settle soon for you. It can take several attempts to settle Jenna as well. We were given a 'Vtech Baby Bear Sweet Dreams' which plays lullabies and natural sounds. It also projects moving light patterns onto the ceiling. We have just started playing it when we put Jenna down and it seems to work (so far).

Hi to everyone else. Sorry, have to go shes just woken up! Just posted some photos on the photobucket website.
Sher and Jo - Siena and Tilly are gorgeous! You must be so proud!

Catch up later!

Kim and Jo -
Just saw the photo postings of Jenna and Tilly - what dolls. I thought Siena had a head of hair, but now I beg to differ!

Hope you are enjoying your babies this weekend. DH and I went shopping and out to eat with Siena. She seems to like getting out. It makes her sleep well.

Smita -
Dhruvaa is adorable. You just want to reach out and touch her beautiful skin. Hope things are going smooth for you this week.

Siena is now sleeping well in her crib. We put her down at 10 p.m. and she sleeps until 10 a.m. the next morning. I get up to feed her three times in that time period. DH said I probably won't know what to do when she sleeps through the night and he is probably right about that!

Dhruvaa is gorgeous! She looks so alert for a 10 day old! You must be so proud. Keep enjoying every minute!

Sher

Great to hear that Siena is sleeping so well in her crib and happily sleeping in it for 12 hours. Its ideal if she just wakes for her feeds then goes straight back to sleep!

Take care all

Sher,
Amazing that Siena sleep through until 10( I loooove her black and white picture-she looks soo calm!!).. I'm waiting for dhruvaa to change her cycle so I can get better rest- she feeds for what seems like 2 hours at a stretch- as in feed poo, feed, wet, feed and then perhaps sleep!!- then its back to wakey wakey in an hour and the cycle starts all over again!!

Kim,
Jenna has a lovely head of hair- and she looks so relaxed.. Hows she doing now?
Is she smiling lot more?
II went and bought 'what to expect the firs year' yesterday.. Is there any other book you'd recommend?

hows everyone else?

hi, i've got the "what to expect in the first year" book and i think it's great. it seems to cover everything and is a pleasure to brewad as it covers month by month. thanks for all the tips and advice that has been shared. i know the key is to be consistent and i think at nine weeks I am happier to start some sort of routine now although i still think i will leave it a little loose as that seems to fit with my ideas most. aftewr a day in which ned had his first vaccinations (such a brave boy!) he is now fast asleep in his cot and seems very settled. he also slpet last night from midnight until five which is a first! maybe we've turned a corner....

hope you're all doing well. i am off to look at the pics of all of your gorgeous babies. i will load one too when i work out the technology!

take care all.

Hi everyone

Smita - The 'What to expect the first year' is the book I would recommend as well. Its so easy to look things up in. I have got some other books. They are ok, but I dont read as much as I used to when I was pregnant, so havent read too much of them yet. I find a lot of info in parenting magazines and on the internet. www.babycentre.co.uk is the website I use a lot. I think its easier to just dip in and out of magazines/the internet nowadays!
Jenna is doing great. I could just sit and cuddle or stare at her all the time, then have to remind myself I have to do SOME housework while she sleeps! She is smiling more now and cooing at us.
How are you doing with sleeping yourself? Its difficult when you are breastfeeding yourself isnt it, to get any rest, because you always have to be available for feeds! I used to go to bed and DH would keep her entertained downstairs, then bring her up for feeds. Even though it could be every hour (especially on an evening!), I did manage to sleep inbetween. I have started expressing milk now, so DH can bottle feed sometimes as well.

Minnow - Jenna is having her first vaccinations on Friday. I hope shes ok with it! Good to hear Ned has slept through. Hope it continues for you!
Look forward to seeing your pics when you post them.

Hi to everyone else. Hope you are all getting plenty of rest and sleep when you can, inbetween enjoying your beautiful babies.

Take care

Hello all,
I saw all your gorgeous babies and wanted to show mine off too! After DH and me spending at least an hour working out what to do I have finally posted a piccie of Ryan. At the weekend we are gonna try and get a good piccie of Abby and Ryan together so I can post that. Although Ryan is only 6 weeks old he weighs 13lb 7oz now! He is very long though and already growing out of his 3-6 month babygros! I think DH must have fed me Miracle gro when I was pg!
Good to hear about all your babies.
K - I used to do the housework while Abby slept and now I dont remember ever cuddling and looking at her much so I'm making the effort to remember with Ryan and to do no housework in the day, but get it done when DH comes home at night. Forget the housework, your baby changes so fast you'll miss her growing up without realising it.
Minnow - Good to hear from you again
Sher - Glad your baby is sleeping better
Smita - Not long now til you get to DH. I dont know how you cope having so little sleep. I breast fed DD for 24 hours and got so tired I went on to formula to get her to sleep. I never did have much stamina!
