I have had one before - there is no pain, just a little weird the next day.

The reason it has to be mid-cycle, as far as I have been told, is that it helps with the treatment if your tubes have just been cleared.

It really does depend on what reason they are investigating (my first was to do with a totally separate issue - nothing to do with IVF at all

)

Have a word with your hospital and hopefully you'll have a better indication as to when they need to do it.

It's a real pain that I can't have the results on the same day
