Heather,

So pleased that you have made a decision re. your new clinic. My friend Leighanne didn't get back to me with my QFG question, sorry if that stuffed you around. I know Sydney IVF have the highest success rates in Australia though, so sounds like you've made a really sound decision.

Paula, gosh you and hubby spend some time apart..must be tough!. Great idea to visit him in Melbourne, there are a few Melbournites on this thread so who knows, you might bump into somone down there (watch out for that MissMolly, I believe that she lurks around parked cars with injuectible drugs she claims to be IVF related!!!!! :D :D :D)

Bella, half way there my friend, well done!!..Are you going to do a hpt or hold out for the bloods??

Take care all, catch up soon

Hi Belinda

I was so tempted to do a HPT today, but I thought it may be too soon for a +ve even if I am pregnant.

I wanted to ask though - my clinic only gives me a HPT. I have used the brand before (when we were ttc naturally), but it says on the packet that it is for IVF tests. But it seems just a regular pee on the stick HPT.

What do you think - should I ask my clinic for a blood test to be sure? Do you ever get false negatives from a HPT or only false positives?

Bella.

Hey Bella,

How odd that your clinic only do the hpt's, my understanding was that it is very much the norm to do blood tests so they can actually ascertain not only that you are pregnant, but what your corresponding HcG levels are (pregnancy hormones). My clinic explained that they need this number so that if they retest you at a later date (ie in a few days or a week) they can check that the figure increased by a particular amount (I think it's supposed to double every two - three days). I think it wouldn't hurt to ask your clinic about whether you can take a blood test..perhaps their practice is to do the bloods once you get a positive hpt result?

Re. my opinion on hpt's, gotta say I'm not a huge fan, probably because I have done so many over the years and have fits of depression just thinking about them!!..But seriously, my understanding is that they can never give a false positive, but can give a false negative. Apparently the hpt's are VERY sensitive and can pick up HcG levels from anywhere around 50 units, so if you're pregnant it's likely that the test will have too stripes, but there are situations very very early on in a pregnancy when your HcG might be lower than 50 and the test doesn't register thereby giving you a false negative. All in all a heap of stress from where I sit. At least with the blood test it's definitive, you get a level (I like the "hard fact" nature of a quantity!) and a final answer. No misiniterpretation, no looking at the stick after it's been in the bin for a day or two and thinking maybe there is a second line (we've all done it haven't we!!).

At the end of the day you have to go with what your clinic recommends I guess, though it certainly can't hurt to ask about the blood test situation.

Good luck!
B :D

Bella,

yea, yea, I am with Bel on the pregnancy test, wouldn't hurt to ask for blood test just to be very sure. You're a v.good gal for not doing HPT yet :) ... not long to go now. I have everything crossed for you.

Heather, Hammy is fine though I don't see him much these days. He is well and truly in hibernation mode.... I think he just sleeps all day and that's it?!?!?!

Bel, what's the weather like up in Brissy? Getting cool here, leaves have turned colour. Autumn colour of red, yellow and bronze... it's so pretty.

Take it easy everyone.

Cheers, Tiger

Hey Tiger,
Brissy is hot hot hot..we've had some rain, so everything is lovely and green which is nice (makes a nice change from the brown crackly grass we've had for the rest of the year!!)
I just got the photos printed fron Annie-Boo's birthday party, they are soooo lovely..does anyone know if the IVF group photo thingy on photobucket is still up? (I could post a photo or two on there)
Enjoy what's left of the weekend

Hi all, everyone sounds well, Bella - hang in there on your 2ww! Happy birthday Annie and Mr Tiger, both cakes sound great (although at this stage, thinking about them too much will probably give me heartburn....).

We are all well, Bel, thanks for your comments on the other thread - the pain has gone away, things seem to have subsided back to normal, just very very tired. Have appt with obst. tomorrow, (26w4d), so will mention to her, but much happier now.

DP and I had a lovely weekend - kids went to friends' houses and we went away Saturday night to a little cottege at a place called Blackwood, a tiny old mining town high in the hills near Daylesford - the days were cool and crisp and we had an open fire last night, very cosy. We seem so busy at the moment, and are moving house the weekend before Christmas, so slowly getting ready for that, so it was great to take some time away.

Watching trashy tv tonight - bits of australian idol, followed by the end of the ABBA special - in case anyone is interested, no. 1 ABBA song is mama mia, followed by waterloo and dancing queen - I would have thought fernando would have been up there, I remember watcing countdown many years ago... and seeing molly pulling out his hair when Fernando was top of the chart for the umpteenth week.

If ok wiht the dr, am planning on flying down to Tassie on the weekend to see Mum and Dad, probably last time before the baby is due.

We have been talking about names, not really getting anywhere, I don't know that just having to choose for a girl is any easier than having to have two alternative lists. At the moment we like Charlotte, Felicity, Imogen and Matilda (although DP is not so sure about Matilda, and I am a bit iffy on Felicity) - we already have a Rebecca, a Jonathan (his two), a Declan and a Grace (my two). Surname ends in ...ey, so need to go with that - all suggestions gratefully received!

Hope everyone has a great week

Josie,

glad to hear that you had a moment to get away from all goings on your life right now. Daylesford, a town in a country yet v.cosmopolitan; I really like that.

A while ago I put a thread up in Gen.Forum on Baby Names... got some crack up responses. I used to think about baby names all the time... not anymore. But once I get my own embies going I reckon I will start naming them yay :) !!.

Hey Josie,

I love your names, especially Matilda (tilly for short is so cute!!), though maybe this is a problem if your surname ends in "ey"??. I also really like Ella and Elly and Maggie and Lucy, oh and Charlotte (Lotte) and Kate and Bella. Hard isn't it to choose??

Tiger, glad that you like the photos, thanks for looking!..I really really look forward to seeing that photo of you and dh and bub in the next year or so! :D

Take care all
Belinda

Hey Bel, the cake looks amazing! You make a nice looking family...Annie is such a little girl now if you know what I mean...no longer looks like a baby but a real little lady, she is very cute. Don't sweat the Doctor stuff, I was so confused that I really just had to ring a few and make a decision.

Bella, not long to go now. Have you given in to the HPT? I really hope this week is flying by for you. In answer to your question, I will be travelling down to Sydney for treatment....I have to go once for an initial appointment and then don't need to go back until just before EC. We will then stay about 8 days until after EC and can come home. They will arrange for all my bloods and scans to be done here! I am originally from Canberra so at least I can spend spend the waiting time in my home town catching up with family and friends. I will let you know what I think of Dr Livingstone....I am pretty confident that you won't need his services though!! :D

Josie, glad everything has returned to normal. Isn't the human body a strange thing. Your weekend sounded fantastic, must be nice just to have some alone time with DH...I guess you need to make the most of any time you can get. Good luck with the packing...I hate moving...but it provides a great opportunity to clean out all the junk you accumulate over the years. I have often thought about pretending to move, ie move all the furniture and junk out so I am forced to go through everything and can also clean every corner of the house!! It'll never happen though. With regard to baby names, I love Matilda too. Some favourites...Lily, Hazel and Isobel. It is really hard to match christian and surnames...I think I have a penchant for L names but none of them are any good with my LL surname. Have a great time in Tassie this weekend, enjoy being fussed over by your mum!

Tiger, hammy sounds like he has a tough life. Wonder what the incidence of stress related disorders is in hamsters....not very high I would think. Hope you are enjoying being home and are giving DH extra hugs to make up for those that you missed out on. Also hope that work is going ok...have you started back yet? Enjoy the wonders of Autumn.

Paula, did ya make it to Melbourne this week. Hope you got the opportunity to catch up with DH and get on with the job of baby making!

MissMolly....is it two weeks to go now!! Wow, seems to have gone fast. Are you getting excited? Stupid question, of course you are. I am getting excited for you!

Deanne, hope you are keeping well and enjoying marvelling at your expanding waistline. Take care.

Well, better stop dilly dallying (stupid saying) and get ready for work. Have a great thursday and go socceroos!

Cheers
Heather

Hey Heather,

Lovely to hear from you, and what a great result in the soccer last night.
Thanks for looking at our photos, Miss Boo is well and truly a little girl now, they are babies for such a short period of time (I used to think that was such a DUMB saying, but it's really true I think!).

Have a great end of week all, almost the weekend!

Hey Jo,
Welcome to this fabulous web site and to our very own aussie - kiwi thread (thank you to the lovely Tiger for setting it up in the first place!) I am a Qld girl myself, as is Heather and Bella, I go through QFG in Wickham Terrace (Marianne Ilbury), Heather is about to go through Sydney IVF and Bella goes to Glen Stirling..I have a little girl Annie Charlotte (otherwise known as Annie-Boo), she is the result of a FET after one miscarriage (previous FET cycle). She is fabulous, and a number of other girls on this thread are pregnant presently (hi to Josie and Deanne). Look forward to hearing all about you and your fertility journey thus far.
All the best :D
