I can't help with the chemical pregnancy but I just learned all about the molar pregnancy.

It is when a sperm fertalizes an empty egg and it attaches but no baby grows. Instead, just the placenta grows and very rapidly. Doctors have to remove it by a D&C and sometimes it grows back so they use chemotherapy to stop it from growing. It's dangerous because the plecenta cells can act like a cancer spreading to other organs. You are monitored very closely with blood tests and scans and are not supposed to get pregnant within a year after the molar pregnancy. I read that the ratio for women in the US is 1 out of 1,000 pregnancies. But it has a lot to do with where you are. What is also kind of scary is that it still gives off high levels of HCG, just like a normal pregnancy and the only way to tell that it isnt one is with an ultrasound to show no baby growing and the cells are supposed to be clumped together like grapes.

Hope that explains it for you. Here is one of the links that I got all my info from. http://www.obgyn.net/women/articles/molarpreg_dah.htm[/url]

Holly, I posted this on the 'clomid' thread too. You asked about chemical and molar pregnancies: this info is cut and pasted from Google results. hth, Debra.

A chemical pregnancy is basically an early miscarriage. Research has shown that half of all first pregnancies end in miscarriage. Due to the high sensitivity of home pregnancy tests, many women catch early pregnancies but end up going on to have their periods due to a chemical pregnancy.

In a molar pregnancy, the early placenta grows abnormally into a mass of cysts (called a hydatidiform mole). The baby (embryo) does not form at all or is malformed and cannot survive.

About 1 in 1,000 pregnancies is molar. Women who are over 40 or who have had two or more miscarriages are at increased risk of molar pregnancy. In the United States, women from Mexico, Southeast Asia and the Philippines are at greater risk than women of European heritage.

All molar pregnancies result from an abnormal fertilized egg with two sets of male chromosomes and either one or no sets of chromosomes from the mother. (In a normal pregnancy, the baby receives one set of chromosomes from each parent.)

Molar pregnancies are diagnosed with ultrasound The molar tissue must be removed from the uterus and the woman monitored to make sure that there is no tissue remaining. Remaining molar tissue can turn into choriocarcinoma, a rare form of cancer. Fortunately, this cancer is easy to detect and has a very high cure rate.

Most women with molar pregnancies go on to have healthy pregnancies later. The risk of reoccurrence is only about one to two percent.

What you can do:
Call your health care provider right away if you have any symptoms of a molar pregnancy:

Vaginal bleeding a week or more after a missed period, usually dark brown in color
Severe nausea and vomiting
Abdominal cramping
High blood pressure
If you have a molar pregnancy, you will need surgery to remove the tissue. Your hCG (a pregnancy hormone) levels will be monitored for about one year to make sure there is no remaining molar tissue. After a molar pregnancy, make sure you give your self time to recover physically and to grieve the loss of your pregnancy.

CVS: Im presuming the CVS Hinak is refering to is Chorionic Villus Sampling.
It describes it in my pregnancy book as a diagnostic test done between the 10th and 16th week of pregnancy. At present it is useful only to detect disorders such as Tay-sachs, sickle-cell anaemia, most types of cystic fibrosis and Downs syndrome. A sample of the chorionic villi (fingerlike projections of the chorion-the fetal membrane that will eventually form the placenta) is taken either transcervical or via a needle through the abdomen.Though most studies so far conclude it is safe and reliable, the procedure is slightly riskier than amniocentesis.

bleeding 3 days before test help!

Post by Mrs M »

Hello there,

Im new to this. Help!!

I'm due to do my pregnancy test 3 days time, I am so nervous, I went to the bathroom very early this morning, and came across a few spottings, in fact I have been like this all day. I rang the clinic who advised me to carry on doing the test on Friday, they say bleeding is very common, has anyone else experienced this! I also had OHSS after ET, which resulted in so much pain for 2 days, then just felt so bloated. I want to see if I can releive my stress between now and Friday (Test Day).
Hope someone can be of help

Hi there, I'm not sure many people will see your post as it's ended up in a thread about abbreviations.

Maybe try your message again in the October 2ww thread, which is full of people waiting to test, also helps talking to people who understand what you're going through. If you click on October 2ww and then again on post reply your message will join the rest.

Good luck
Debra.
