Prometrium, Has anyone used it?

Post by wannababyIVF »

This is my second round of IVF and my RE prescribed prometrium vaginal insert 3 times a day. Has anyone ever used it? Recall any side effects? Today is my first day using it and I have been feeling nauseous off an on. I was wondering if the nausea was due to the anesthesia given to me for the ER yesterday. But I feel fine today, was able to eat and keep the food down. But after the first insert this morning, I felt nauseous, then felt it again after the second one. Has anyone else used this and felt the same thing?

With my first cycle, I was given Crinone, but AF came 5 days after ET. RE said that was way too soon and wanted to try another form of progesterone. Some people have progesterone oil, others crinone and now I am on prometrium (which I have never heard of). Are some better than others? How is it decided who should get one? I know that’s a tricky one as we all have very different protocols.

Any assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Ladies!

I take it orally. sometimes it makes me dizzy and woozy, like I'm drunk. I think it can cause nausea too. I've been taking it since I had ET. I was on a special prog pill from Shcraft's with my previous 2 ETs. I felt fine taking that and thought about switching back to it, but I got PG this time so decided not to change anything.

Hi Hopeful!! Thanks for replying. I also received my promterium from Shcraft's. I was confused because the paper work said to take it 3 times a day orally. But then the medication bottle said three times a day vaginally. I called RE to ask him how I was suppose to take it. He said vaginally. It's weird to me that the same meds that you can take orally, you can also take vaginally?

Progesterone in oil (PIO) is the gold standard, but the shots are painful. Some use PIO to get the progesterone levels above a threshold, then switch to other types to sustain that level.

The suppositories are the next most effective delivery.

Common side effects of progesterone include:
  • headache
    breast tenderness or pain
    upset stomach
    vomiting
    diarrhea
    constipation
    tiredness
    muscle, joint, or bone pain
    mood swings
    irritability
    excessive worrying
    runny nose
    sneezing
    cough
    vaginal discharge
    problems urinating

Prometrium use

Post by suezer »

Hi -- I am very well versed in using Prometrium. I feel like I have been on it for years. This is our second time around the fertility circuit ( I have a 2 year old daughter), and early on we learned I didn't produce enough Progesterone. My doctor also has me use it vaginally, which is annoying to say the least. With IUIs I've taken it 3x a day. With my recent IVF (we test on Tuesday), I take it 4x a day. (Could just be my personal history). Side effects for me have included being nauseas and dizzy, but more than anything it gives me headaches and makes me tired. It mimics the effects of being pregnant because when you are pregnant your body produces more progesterone. Hang in there though. It has seemed to do the trick for a quite a few gals I know.

I took Prometruim vaginally when I did IUI's. My RE hasn't prescribed it for my IVF's, I'm on my 2nd one. I believe I took it twice, once in the morning and once at night. I've never taken them orally, just vaginally.

Thanks so much ladies! I swear you are all God sent. I have so many questions and conerns while going through this. It makes me feel so much better to know others that have gome through the same thing. I really appreciate all the info. I feel so much better now.

Since taking the prometrium, I have been feeling nauseous and a little tired. It will be all worth it if it works.

Does anyone know if you have to lay down after using it. It's kind of difficult to do when you are inserting it 3 times a day. :-(

Prometrium

Post by Cori »

I have not begun IVF yet but it is anticipated that I will if this cycle of IUI didn't work. But, my doctor also prescribes Prometrium suppositories to me after every IUI cycle. I have a luteal phase defect and my progesterone levels are consistently low when my blood work is taken.
The side effects that I have experienced are: severe mood swings, tiredness, headaches, nausea (not often) and dizziness. My husband cringes when I begin taking them because I am soooooo moody.
Good luck with everything!
