IUI vs IVF

Post by lynniecat »

I went straight to IVF. I might still have insurance for IUI although the IVF coverage is gone now. Is there hope with IUI?

lynniecat - There is always a chance with IUI as long as your eggs can make it to the uterus and your DH's swimmers are swimming well. The success rate with IVF is higher but if your insurance will pay for IUI I would say it would be worth a shot. Though you won't be needed it this time because you will be getting your BFP.

Heh...thanks but sadly its a BFN and I don't think its changing, but maybe...

I was wondering about free IUI (losing months as I am 42) or paid for IVF. Yes egg can make it to uterus, and DH's swimmers are olympians!

lynniecat - I know they can do IUI with injectables to give you more eggs to deal with. You would have to pay for the drugs if insurance doesn't cover them but it would be cheaper then Ivf. I think IUI's at my RE's office is around $300 but it might be more at other offices if they do more u/s and b/w.

Lynnie,

It can't hurt to try an IUI. You might want to try the injectables as Chris says. We tried IUI first but were converted to IVF due to DH's count. If your DH has nice strong boys and nothing is wrong with your plumbing I'd say go for it.

Oh and ladies, I have 20 boxes of gonal f and 25 vials of menopur left. So that would make the IUI more affordable.

Yeah its funny how it happened, but I did not complain. 600 per vial and I took 450 a day. So its enough for two months.

Lynniecat, I am 31 but it seems you are concerned with time because you said you are losing months. As months pass by, the quality of our eggs diminishes. Well, IUI does work as I am proof, my third one resulted in prego of twins. I miscarried them after seeing the heartbeats at 120bpm. But...it takes time for IUI to work, my case 3 months, then miscarriage and recovery, all taking about a half of a year. Regardless of my case, the Dr said the fastest and most reliable way to get back to being prego was to go IVF...it is what my Dr sugested after going through everything I had with her. She talked about the stims + IUI but she said it doesn't increase your chances like IVF does and after 3 cycles, its the same price as IVF anyway so we are going to do IVF, not the way I want to have children but I want to have my own children. It is more invasive but I am willing to do it, out of pocket too.

Actually, when she puts it that way, I might save your meds for your out of pocket IVF cycle. CCRM is expensive.

Ask your RE what the odds are for you for IUI. They were terrible for us (10%) but our insurance required it before converting to IVF.
