Ist Scan....Devastated

Hi all, Having had my first 7 week scan on saturday I was told they are 95% sure that the pregnancy won't continue. I was devastated as my hcg levels last week were ok, so was not expecting such bad news. They also took another blood sample and are ringing me tomorrow to confirm. I'm looking for some advice from anyone who has been in the same situation. The only thing the nurse said was that it would be like a heavy period, which quite worried me as my periods are heavy anyway as I have a fibroid. How long will the bleeding last? Is it painful? I'm trying to stay postive but finding it hard to stop bursting into tears. Hope these questions are not to personal or upsetting for anyone but really do feel quite low and alone. I would appreciate any advice. Sue

Hi Sue, Sorry to hear about this. If it is like a miscarriage then yes the bleeding will be heavy and you will also be very crampy at times as the body is trying to expel everything. I had a miscarriage a few months ago so I know how hard it is. Have they given you anu indication of what happened and why. It is so annoying when you don't have answers. It is hard and if you feel like crying, cry. Eventually you will feel better. Just think that it was not meant to be. This IVF thing is a real palaver. Just when you think you are over one hurdle, another one appears. We just have to be strong. Don't give up yet, you never know.

Sue, Firstly let me say how sorry I am to hear your news. I have been pg 5 times and never got as far as a heartbeat. My last pg in May this year was via my 1st IVF, and I had my 1st scan at 7 weeks. Like yourself there was only a small sac there-no sign of life-a day I will not forget. I have been under St Marys Recurrent m/c clinic in Paddington for 3 years, so went there for a 2nd opinion. They scanned me and gave me the same result, but thought I had an ectopic. The only reason I mention this is it meant that my blood levels were monitored. My hcg was very low for 7 weeks, but as it dropped, a/f gradually started. After a few days it progressed until I had a m/c. Unfortunately when your cervix opens it does hurt alot, and can be quite upsetting. However if you know this then please don't be frightened. Once all the clotting and main bleed finishes then it stops as quickly as a normal a/f. I opted for this rather than a d&c, as I had one following a m/c years ago and I literally bled for weeks. God as I am writing this I am wondering if I am being too frank, and I am sorry if I have been. Sue, you are better off letting nature take its course. If you collect any tissue, then the hospital can attempt to grow some to try and see why it has happened. I found on most web sites I went into that it is about 90% likely to be a chromosomal problem. From what I have read, the embryo is more fussy than the sac, and although there is a random chromosome error, the sac will proceed but the embyo won't. Thus we only find out at a scan instead of a normal m/c, which would start with bleeding. Of course it is virtually impossible to pinpoint exactly what happened, but getting the tissue examined may provide answers. The main thing is for you both to take care of one another. Had results of blood test hcg level was 5429 so taking 8.6 days to double instead of 2 days so my pregnancy is gradually coming to an end. Have been told to let nature take its course & if bleeding not started by friday have to go for a D&C. Our problem is DH who has lots of swimmers but also some abnormal. I have read that there is a higher chance of m/c when there are sperm abnormalities and want to know if there is anyone out there who has had a successful pregnancy with this problem. Have been advised that can't start next cycle until new year but am concerned that same thing could happen again. Also read something about corticosteroids which can help with abnormal sperm anyone heard of or experienced this. Would appreciate any comments or advice and to hear from anyone starting new cycle in new year. Sue
