High Prolactin Level - Any Ideas?

Post by Faith »

Hello Everyone,
First of all, Happy New Year to you all.... Here's hoping 2004 is a better year for all of us....

Once agian I've been quiet for a while, been putting everything in place for my first IVF treatment. DH and I have had all our tests, signed all the forms, etc, etc. The only problem is that my prolactin level was measured at my GP's and found to be 1200 (whatever units). This is WAY WAY above average, so I had a retest done. In the meantime I sent the results to the clinic (MFS). I've just had a letter today asking for the results of the retest, as, if the level is still high I will need 'treatment' (don't know what) before we start IVF as a high reading will stop me conceiving (according to the letter). I rang the doctors today and the second reading was 1170 - so still massively high. Really, really cheesed off.
My question is, has anyone else had experience of high prolactin levels (all my other tests seemed to be OK). I've not seen this mentioned much, so don't know anything about it.
It just seems that every step we take forward on this IVF journey, we seem to take 2 backwards (or rather I do.... all DH's tests were normal). I'm beginning to think I'll never even get to STARTING treatment (I've just turned 36) never mind completing it successfully.... (For those that don't know I also have severe Endo, blocked tubes and Adenomyosis (endo in the walls of the uterus).
Anyway, sorry for whinging....I know others have worse problems than me.... But really, if anyone has any information on prolactin levels I'd really appreciate it...
Love to all,

Faith xx

PS Not sure about the new layout....liked it better before, I think....

Hi Faith,

I can't really help you with the questions your asking but I am sure there will be someone who will be able to help.

What clinic are you under? I notice you put MFS is that Midland Fertility or have I got it wrong?

Well good luck.
Love
Shell.

Hi Faith,

I also have high prolactin levels (untreated my levels are similar to yours). I was prescribed Bromocriptine and it brought them right down - it only took a couple of weeks on 2.5mg to bring my level down to 100. Unfortunately mine won't stay down without Bromocriptine (I have an small growth on my pituatry gland) so I have been taking it now for 6 years and have to have my levels monitored on a regular basis. This is something that I have insisted on and luckily because they have a habit of creeping back up. But my consultants have said that with most people once they have got the level down they can come of medication and it stays down.

Hopefully this won't delay your treatment too much - it is a very easy problem to rectify.

If I can help in any way let me know.

Hi Dolly & Shell,
Thanks so much for your replies, I don't know what I'd do without this site...there's always someone willing to help.
Shell - I really appreciate your kind thoughts. Being so close to your due date I don't know how you find the time to still be there for everyone.... I know you've had a lot of worries throughout your pregnancy, so I'm wishing you the best of luck for the coming weeks and will be looking out for your big announcement! You really deserve your happiness. You asked about which clinic I'm at...I think my head must have been full of broken biscuits in place of my brain last night, as I put MFS (Manchester Fertility Services) but actually, I'm not with them (that's where I was going to go!) I'm with Care in Manchester! Shows how confused I was last night....!

Dolly - Thanks SO much for your advice. It was really comforting to hear from someone who has the same problem. As you guessed, what was worrying me was that it was something that would take MONTHS to rectify... I'm really relieved to know that (unless I'm really unlucky) that won't be the case. I know the clinic could have told me this, but sometimes I think the people on here know more....
Best of luck with your treatment. As always I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for everyone....
Gotta go - I'm sure I can smell the tea burning....!
Love to all,

Faith xx
