Which vitamins are really the best??

Post by Dagny »

Hi girls

I know what Zita West suggests but I just wondered if anyone knows what vitamins are really the best to take?

I was going to get separately -

Vit E
Selenium
Zinc
Folic
Multi vitamins

The woman in the shop said to get 'Pregnacare' as it has all of them apart from Selenium which I bought separately. She also told me that you shouldn't have vitamin A as this causes misscarriage  (assuming I get that far) - has anyone else been told this???

My DH is taking Vitamin C. Should he be taking Zinc or Selenium as well? His sperm is fine and not the problem.

I am getting a bit confused as there seems to be so many vitamins you can take but I will be rattling soon if I took all of them

Any suggestions greatly received.

Hi Dagny (BTW. nice idea for a v. useful thread),

I've read and been told to avoid Vit.A too. In fact most multi-vits carry a warning on the side - this quote comes from a tub of Holland & Barrett multi vits:

"do not take this product if you are pg or likely to be come pg. Pg women should not supplement with more than 2,664 IU (800) preformed Vit.A daily, except on the advice of their doctor".

Following my wobbles earlier on tmt preparation, I've decided to make sure each meal is nutritionally optimal and only supplement with folic acid.

hugs,
Debra.

I too have been taking Pregnacare since before I started treatment and am continuing through my pregnancy so far. I feel healthier than i ever did before and less concerned about my diet because i know i and the babies are getting everything we need.

I've just been taking a prenatal vitamin (they have very inexpensive brands in the pharmacies here in the states). However, I just looked at the bottle to see what they contain and there is actually 4,000 IU of Vitamin A in them.
I also probably eat plenty of foods which have Vitamin A so that would mean I'm getting even more than that.

I had never heard of Vitamin A being dangerous in pregnancy so I just ran a search on the internet and see now that it is a concern .... especially in the months before conception and early pregnancy. I don't understand how this company can get away with selling a vitamin which is intended for women who are planning to become pregnant/are pregnant when it has something in it that is so questionable. Now, I'm really worried as I've been taking them every day for months and don't know how long it would take for the Vitamin A to clear out of my system. Should I wait longer to do the FET?

Help! Panicking!

Hi Staci

I am sorry I have made you panic. I am just glad I found out now! Please don't panic though as that's not good for you either.

Thanks for all your replies girls.

Oh Staci, sorry this was a shock and sorry my quoting the label made it worse.

I'm sure it's nothing to worry about today. If you felt easier you could skip a day or two until you speak to your clinic? Are they available today? Putting it bluntly, it seems unlikely a US drug company would risk lawsuits over something so apparently obvious. Is there a customer service number for the manufacturers? I think it's just what is normal in one location is different in another. Here women drink huge amounts of coffee, in fact everyone does. Caffeine-free is unheard of so how come the birthrate is unaffected.

Have a restful weekend, as Dagny-The-Wise pointed out, extra stress isn't needed, we have more than enough already.

love
Debra.

I guess you are right. I mean there must be millions of women taking these things so it should be ok. At any rate, to play it safe, I think I'll go out tomorrow and try to find one without Vitamin A!

Dag - I my opinion , dont waste your money on Zita West or Mailyn Glenville stuff - just take Boots or basic pregancare tablet or as you are doing take them seperately. Folic acid the most important and zinc for your bloke although it made no difference to my bloke
I took baby aspirin as well if that helps.

Fingers crossed

Hi Caz

Thanks matey. I am not sure about baby aspirin as my consultant looked less than impressed when I mentioned it before my last tmt. He said nothing was proven yet and that my problem is just tubal so he didn't think I should. I did fall with Katelyn without aspirin so I will give it a miss. I do wonder though how effective it would be?

How is the sickness? Hope you are starting the blooming stage soon.

Only me come to stick my oar in

Staci - stop panicking - have only today read a great article in the times supplement over here about what we should and should not eat in pg and how the US and UK and France etc are all so different. Vit A is a huge thing here - some vitamin a is good for you so they say - so liver etc in smaller doses and in natural form in pg - it will do nothing to you but if you feel better stop taking the a - not good to have too much anyway. The article said today there actually is very little evidence that it does the m/c thing they talk about so please don't worry.
Dagny - I took Pronatal (Nik took as well so if you want twins! ) Vit c (but was winter - have ceased that now), zinc, selenium, fish oil and vit e - have now stopped it all apart from pronatal and vit e and zinc - too much vit c is not good in vit form but did not stop for 15 weeks and the selenium had some a in so stopped that after a while but NO ASPIRIN - well done - e is a natural blood thinner anyway. DH was on Zinc and selenium and c but this was on fresh cycle - he stayed on zinc anyway and does not have sperm problem but zinc is just a great vitamin!

Good luck to you all
Love
Tracey
