I posted this earlier today but it seems to have vanished!
My baby is 6 weeks old but was 4 weeks early and weighed 4lb 4oz. She now weighs 5lb. During the last week or so she will not settle in her moses basket after the night time feeds. She cries until I put her on my chest and then she sleeps. If I wait until she falls asleep and then put her back in her basket, she cries instantly.
I am worried that she will slide off me and suffocate. Also, I don't sleep very well with her on me. My other daughter was the same but not as bad.
This was 6 years ago and I can't remember how it resolved itself!
Has anyone got any suggestions or should I just continue in the hope she will settle down later?
Maya used to sleep on me sometimes when she was newborn and inconsolable so I understand a little of what you're going through. I'm tempted to say try not to let it become habit. For understandable reasons, why would she ever want to go to sleep alone if sleeping on warm, lovely mummy is also an option? You need your sleep and you need all your energy for daytimes.
Maybe give her even longer cuddles before putting her down but do what is suggested for later on, comfort her whilst she's lying in the basket but don't lift her out otherwise she'll cry until you lift her irrespective. Does she respond to sounds? what about a toy that plays a lullaby? what if you humm or sing to her a bit? Obviously you don't want her to only sleep this way otherwise you're stuck doing it everynight but maybe just for a bit until she gets used to going to sleep alone? Your message implies she only does this at night, so perhaps her routine needs tweaking? If she can fall asleep alone during the day it's nothing to do with the basket, position or being alone, so perhaps it's the time of day?
Just a few random ideas. I hope you find a solution very quickly.
Hugs
Debra.
Sam was 7 weeks early and 4lb 7. After we came home from hospital, he did develop colic and was a nightmare to put down. My dh used to put him on his chest inside his zip up top and that's how he went to sleep \9\sam, not dh!)
Do you think your wee one could have a touch of colic? We found infacol not that great, but that gripe water helped more.
Try not to worry too much and ask your HV for advice too.
Take care
