Can IVF mess up your cycle and cause endometriosis?

Post by reddress »

hello :) I am so happy to have found this forum! It's been so comforting!

I'm 30 and my husband and I have been trying for 13 months. After 2 failed IUI's, we decided to try IVF. I tracked my cycles with the Clear Blue Fertility monitor for a year before we started TTC, and I always ovulated on the 15th day, period on the 29th day. The IVF did not work, and for the past 2 months post IVF, my cycles have been crazy! Last month it was 36 days, this month I ovulated on day 26 so I'm expecting a 40 day cycle! Has this happened to anybody else!?!?

Also, I previously had cysts on my ovaries that were small and would go away by the end of the cycle, but post IVF, I now have a large cyst that the doctors are now thinking may be endometriosis... uternine tissue traveling up the fallopian tube and creating a cyst. So now I'm completely freaked out!

I was just wondering if anybody has any insight on what this could mean? I always had very regular cycles and hardly any period pain. The doctor originally ruled out endometriosis... but it looks like I may have it after all. Could the IVF/hormones caused it? I'm so confused and scared!

Hi Reddress,

Welcome to the board. It's been really helpful for me as a resource and a support network (I only recently joined as well). I can't speak directly to your concern -- I was diagnosed with a mild case of endometriosis after a laproscopy and hysteroscopy to take a look at a number of uterine fibroids. They were able to clear up a bit of it during the procedure actually. I'm now on my first cycle of IVF and am on day 7 of the 2ww.

I did learn a lot about endometriosis over the past number of months -- there are sometimes no signs at all (my period also ran like clockwork, though I did have usually a day or two of nasty cramps). The only way doctors can be sure is if they perform a laproscopy. Having had it done, it's not awful, though you'll want to set aside a few days to recover from the general anasthesia and the (very small) incisions.

Endo can also really be managed a lot through nutrition -- you want to avoid inflammatory foods like dairy/wheat/caffeine/alchohol. Also, ibuprofin is supposed to be terrible for it. Zita West's book, Fertility and conception, has a great liver detox that one of the their nutritionists put me on when I went to the clinic -- I felt fantastic on it, and also it helped clear up a lot of my symptoms.

All this is to say, I don't know if IVF can cause endo (though I wouldn't be surprised if it could aggravate it). One sure cure, the doctors told me, is to get pregnant! Good luck and hope you are able to get the answers your're looking for.

Hello
Just wanted to day my cycles have been messed up since my IVF too! Not sure if this is comforting or not....

I like you, always had a regular LH surge every month before IVF, so am pretty sure I was ovulating. However, since the IVF (two cyles now) no ovulation! Very sad. And quite concerning what the drugs can do.

My first period did arrive after 32 days (a few days later than normal) and am now on day 29 of my second cycle, so hoping it'll be soon. I did have a scan a few days ago on day 25 and the doc said I did have a dominate follicle so were either going to ovulate really late or not at all. I explained my worries to doc and she said the drugs can stay in your body for up to 6 weeks. They seem to have stayed with me a bit longer!

Maybe our bodies have gone into hibernation and are going to take a little while longer to recover.

I am slightly gutted as we are going to do IUI this cycle and there is now no hope of a natural cycle so I have to rely on Clomid.
Now I'm worrying if the Clomid is going to work at all!! Crazy!

Anyway, be patient, if you are worried why don't you speak to your doc?

Take care, am sure in a few months, we'll both be right as rain!
