OHSS

Post by Niki Pitt »

Hi there. I am new to this online chat. Only just found out about it, but its great to know I am not alone. I suffer from PCOS, and had IVF in Jan 2003 which failed! Had OHSS as a result of IVF and was very very poorly in hospital. It has taken until now for us to decide to go ahead with another cycle. Our first appointment to start the planning for treatment is 23rd February, but I am very scared in case I hyperstimulate again. Has this happened to anyone else? I would like some reassurance that this won't happen again and my consultant has reassured me that it wont, but I don't know anyone else this has happened to.

Niki

I had OHSS, though not severe enough for hospital. Since that was my first cycle and I'm yet to start the second, I don't have any personal experience that it doesn't happen again. :(
However, since the consultant now knows more about your response, it does make sense that it won't happen again. :)

Keep up the PMA, you'll see that all will go well this cycle!

Thanks for replying. When do you start your treatment? Lets hope we don't experience OHSS again. Chin up and good luck. Let me know how you get on.

I think Chances of OHSS get higher if the E2 level is very high. That is why the doctors try to keep the E2 level around 3500 before the retrieval because the HCG further triggers the E2 level.
Some woman do not experience OHSS even with high level of E2 level and some do even in aceptable range.
Since you had this OHSS last time, I am sure that the doctors will fine tune your dosage so that your e2 does not rise drastically and the risk of OHSS is reduced.

Do not worry, have faith every cycle is different. Just drink lot of water, milk and proteins . This also helps control OHSS

good luck!

Hi Niki,

I had severe OHSS in my cycle last July, and was in hospital for 8 days. I am about to start FSH injections tomorrow for my second cycle. My clinic says that while I do have a higher chance of getting OHSS again, they are more experienced because of what happened on my last cycle. This means they will start with a lower dosage of FSH, and monitor me more closely. Also, OHSS increases with each step of your cycle, so after EC, ET etc. the chances of OHS increases. My doctor has said to me that if I start to look sick, they will cancel the cycle. I hope it doesn't get cancelled but it is good to know that they will watch closely to avoid me going into hospital again.

Good luck - but keep positive. It is better that they know what your threshold is now, so they can keep a better eye on you.

Bella.

Hi Niki,

I did my 1st IVF cycle in Oct 05 and just before taking the HCG shot my E2 levels were at 8600 and they had to cancel ER. I was admitted in the hospital since I had OHSS and having major cramps and would not stop throwig up.

Started my 2nd IVF 2 weeks ago, and the doctor monitored me very closely. They started me at 1/2 the dosage of the Inj that what I was on last time. Even now when I see other womens protocols, I wasnt on high medications even the last time.

My ER was on Friday last week and they retrieved close to 12 eggs. I have been having major cramps and have been throwing up again after ER. I am haoping that my ET doesnt get cancelled.

With PCOS I have learnt it is one day at a time, we cannot plan anything ahead of time, since we dont know how the drugs with react.

This time my E2 level was close to 3300 and doctor decided to do ER one day before planned.
I have my ET planned for Wed, but again am hoping I dont have OHSS and need to cancel the ET.

My only recommendation is that go to a doctor who is experienced with PCOS patients. Last time when I was overstimulated and did a lot of research on the internet and realized how risky OHSS can be.

All the best to you and lots of PMA.
