OHSS

Post by yogibunny »

Hi,
I'm in the middle of trying to deal with OHSS and I thought it might be helpful to have a tread just for this topic. The fact that it can be a positive sign has been keeping me going, but at the same time I wonder at having these symptoms for three months if it does work!

Are the others of you with this still really, really uncomfortable? What are you doing to help it?

Me: I'm trying to drink loads each day, but avoiding water as instructed. I'm weeing regularly - including at night to relief discomfort. I look about six months pregnant - which I don't know how to explain to people... and this morning had breathing problem episode which I'm not sure if it is just an anxiety attack (clinic was suggesting on phone) - although no real reason for that.

Any shared thoughts experiences at this stage appreciated. Test date weds for me...

Cheers,
Angela

Hello Angela

I'm sorry that you're experiencing OHSS. I also had the same problem with my last IVF and had to into hospital. I don't want to scare you but you should make your dr aware of all your symptoms and even better make an appt to see him/her, just so they can check you're OK. I just rang mine to ask him to write me off sick one more day and he wanted to see me right away.

My dr also told me to drink lots but as soon as I was in hosiptal I was limited to 1 litre of liquids a day, which I found a bit confusing  Anyway, I was feeling better after 5 days - I hope you will soon feel better too. Let us know how you are.

Hi Angela,

I too have the fab OHSS. Mine started 6 days before i tested. It was very painful to begin with but is now just uncomfortable at night (trying to sleep on side takes much manouvering with pillows!). I also had the breathing trouble at the beginning - sounded asthamtic and was unable to walk and talk at the same time. I am only talking about being on the phone and moving around the house. This is what my dr was most concerned about. I have not been told to avoid water but have been asked to drink a pint of milk a day along with about 3 litres of fluid a day. It seems that along with rest is all we can do. I have heard that yes we could have this for the first 12 weeks. I am living in my tracksuit pants as no skirts or jeans fit. I have not been back to work as my clinic rec i get my GP to sign me off. This is my 2nd week off so i have not been at work since JAn 23rd. My manager is the only person who knows i have been doing IVF so making up a good lie about why i look 6 mths pregnant is going to be fun - any ideas?

Definately going stir crazy but not sure what i could do at work as i am a bookseller and being on my feet all day is currently not an option. do you have backpain at the moment - mine is a constant ache. The one thing i am thankful for is that i have no morning sickness or sore breasts to contend with as well. I am 5 weeks today so keeping fingers crossed very tight it is all ok. On tenterhooks until my scan. You are exactly one week behind me i think. Anyway enough babbling. Hope all goes well on Wed but i have good vibes for you.

Love Saraid

Hi Angela,

Sorry to hear you are still feeling so poorly. I hope your dr. has been giving you instructions on how to help relieve your symptoms. At a minimum they should be testing you every couple of days to make sure you are not getting worse.

I was lucky that mine only lasted about a week, with the worst of it being about 4 days. I was even luckier that it did turn out to be a BFP for me too! I've heard that it will continue through pregnancy for up to the first trimester but mine seems to be pretty well under control right now. I can relate to the big belly though... There are 2 other women at work that are both at about 14 weeks and when I'm not sucking it in, my belly is bigger.

I hope you find some relief. Hang in there until your test day... wishing you lots of good wishes for that.

Thanks guys -
got back from check up. He was quite reassuring at least. Will hear later today from blood tests again. I hope they are okay though.

He suggested about 2-3 litres a day (nearer 2 for me as I'm quite small). Not water, but fluid with lots of protein in like milk etc.

He assured me that the worst of the symptoms would only last an extra week or two if I am pregnant although it may be another few after that before I feel completely normal from it. This was good to hear as I did not like the thought of 3 months like this.

I do have back ache sometimes - mostly at night actually, and also am using various teddies and heat pads to make sleeping on sides easier etc!

Unfortunately I am feeling sick sometimes as well as the other discomforts. I don't know if this is morning sickness or just the nausia symptom of OHSS? Definitely feels like a double whammy when that happens though!

I really don't know what story to tell everyone either - I'm thinking of being generic - like I've had an adverse reaction to some drugs I'm on at the moment.... but not sure it will wash.

I hope you all feel better soon too.

Thanks
Angela

Hi all, DH here
Don't know if this is the best place to put this, but thought you might like to know thata Angela was admitted to hospital on Monday with OHSS.
She is still in today, no news on when she will be allowed out.
Pregnancy test is today so fingers crossed for all testing today.
They want to X-ray her chest today!! I am a bit concerned about that but they say it will be ok.

Hi Angela's DH,

Thank you for letting us know how Angela is. I'm sorry she had to be admitted to hospital, and with the timing when you should be excited about your test. I hope it's a BFP!

I was admitted into hospital last year with OHSS for 8 days. She will be OK - you just need to support her while she's there, b/c it can get very uncomfortable.

Please let us know how she goes.

I'm wishing you all the best of luck for a positive test result!

Bella.

Dear DH,

So sorry to hear about Angela's hospital admission. It is a scary time but she is in the best place. My clinic were most concerned about the breathing aspect which will e why they are x-raying her lungs(checking for fluid i assume). I am now entering my 3rd week of OHSS and am getting better. The bloating is receding quite rapidly. I think this is due to the 2-3 pints of milk a day.

Good luck for your testday. i am sure it is going to be a BFP!!!!!

Send my love to Angela

Hello DH

Thanks for informing us. Please send Angela our best wishes for a speedy recovery. You must be worried about her but she is in the right place and they will look after her well. Is she on a drip? That did the trick for me. Hope it will all be worth it in the end!!

Hi all, and thanks again for all your messages of support which were lovely to see when I was in hospital. I made them let me home after 5 days, as I was getting so frustrated with them! They put me on a drip to thin my blood which had got too thick. I was then on 3 litres a day of drip but nearly 2 of fluid. This resulted in me having too much liquid in me, putting on half a stone in one day and getting even bigger. I could hardly walk down the corridor by the end of the day.
The worst thing I found was that they are supposed to measure your urine, weight, and girth. They kept forgetting to record the urine and did the other two at different times every day. I got to the point were I realised I could manage this better at home.
Now that I am home I am starting to feel slightly better, but I feel it could be in for the long haul.

THe BFP was great news though - I'm looking forward to being able to focus on this more.

Big hugs to all and good luck.

Angela
