Day 3 vs. Day 5 Transfer

Post by TCup »

Have most of you had a day 3 or a day 5 transfer?
I'm having my first transfer tomorrow on day 3.
I don't know if one is better, it seems to depend on each individual situation.

Thanks.

i have not yet had my transfer, but my doctor explained that he prefers to do a five-day transfer, because the embryos have had longer to develop and it is easier to determine their quality and therefore their likelihood of continuing to develop -- he will only put in two on a dav-five transfer. he said that by doing a three-day transfer, he is sort of saying that their quality and development is not quite what it could be, and will put more in, because they are less likely to implant.

of course, every doctor is different. hope that helps anyway.

In the UK, you can have 2 embryos put back on day 3, or 3 if you're over 40, and 2 blastocysts put back on day 5 whatever age you are. I have got pg both ways. Embryos grow better inside you than they do in the lab, so the sooner you put them in the better chance they have. However, if you have more than 2 (or 3) good embryos on day 3, they will keep them til day 5 to weed out the weaker ones and select the best-looking embryos for transfer. If you only have 2 (or 3) decent embryos on day 3, they'll just put those straight in.
So, it's a way of selecting the best embryos. Your embryos will survive or not survive - waiting til day 5 for transfer won't increase their chances of survival. I prefer day 3 myself, because the medium they keep them in in the lab is not as perfect as being in the uterus.
Good luck!
