Gestational Sac

Post by HopeFaith »

Hello Everyone,
I am brand new to this forum. Just wanted to see if anybody is in the same situation as me. This is my 3rd IVF. First was a failure, 2nd turned out to be positive (for a while anyway), then i miscarried during my 12th week. Finally went through another IVF again, and my pregnancy test turned out to be positive, but my nurse said that the HCG level wasn't as high as she had hoped. However, since then, i'm in my 5th week now, and my HCG levels seem be doubling ok. I had my first scan yesterday to check for a gestational sac with yolk. Unfortunately, the doc was only able to see a hint of a sac which is only 4 mm and had no yolk visible. He asked me to come back tomorrow. I'm so nervous. Not sure what to make of this whole situation. Does anybody have an explanation or a similar situation? An empty sac can apparently be any of the following, positive pregnancy, ectopic pregnancy or a spontaneous miscarriage. Please help if anybody has a logical explanation. I'm losing my mind. This is such a roller coaster ride. It's been very tough on myself and my DH.

I too am on my 3rd IVF. The first one didn't work and the second resulted in a pregnancy, which I lost in the 12th week too (last December). During the course of my pregnancy, we spoke to a genetics specialist. She told us that the doctors like to see a heartbeat by 6 weeks, but that babies grow at all different rates. (Our baby didn't have a heartbeat until 7+). She and the doctor also said that they had seen cases where there wasn't a heartbeat at first, but things evened out. Seeing nothing now may mean that the baby is in trouble, but it really might not. Don't give up hope unless/until there isn't any. I can relate to the fear you are feeling. I am going in for an embryo, day 3 transfer tomorrow and am really nervous. Wish me luck.

Dear Kate,
Thank you for your kind words. It's so comforting to hear from someone who is going through the same thing as you. I hope your transfer goes well tomorrow. Keep your fingers crossed and most of all keep faith in God. I wish you the best of luck with your procedure tomorrow. Don't be nervous. Just keep praying and everything will work out.
As for me, went back in for another US today and nothing has changed. The sac is shrinking by the day and still no yolk visible. We just have to wait for a natural miscarriage. I'm looking forward to my next procedure. That's the best I can do.
Please don't be discouraged by my situation, just think good thoughts and keep praying. I am sending all kinds of good vibes your way. Best of Luck!!!

I am so sorry to hear that! I know that is not at all what you were hoping for. I don't think that people who don't have to go through IVF have any clue how devastating a miscarriage can be for us. Just know that I (and I'm sure others who read this) are sending up prayers for you. The doctors told me that as much as 20% of pregnancies end in miscarriage. When I had mine, they said I just fell on the wrong side of the fence. I hope next time you fall into that glorious 80%. When that happens, it'll all be worth it!

I did the day three transfer, but this cycle didn't go so hot. The best embryo out of four was only six cells on day three. I guess you never know. Will find out Friday. If it didn't work, I will try to keep the same positive attitude you have - looking forward to the next one. Hang in there...
