Pitting Edema/Swelling

Post by sleepyfoy »

Got a question for you ladies.... I know that swelling comes along with pregnancy... This being the first time around for me, every little change is "WHAT?!?!?!?!?" I am 7 months pregnant and on Wednesday my hands lost their knuckles and by the night my feet were HUGE!!! Yesterday I had the day off, so I sort of took it easy... Napped and went for a walk.. All day I kept an eye on my feet which are HUGE and I started poking at them... That is when I saw the pitting edema. Is this normal this early? Any suggestions? I am trying to drink a TON of H2O.

Thanks!!!

Hey Jodi,
Boy!!..sounds like your oedema is pretty problematic. I'm an Occupational Therapist and I work with people with oedema fairly frequently. Pitting oedema tends to develop when the swelling has hung around for a while (and pitting means that when you stick your finger in the swelling the indent remains).

There are a couple of things you can do. First and foremost I would got to the doctor to get checked out, just to be sure you're not developing pre-eclampsia. The doctor will check your blood pressure and also look at your uring for signs of protein. Pre-eclampsia is a serious medical condition and can require hospitalisation, so I would definately get that check out initially. Other things you can do include gentle exercise (walking, ankle pumping exercises) and /or wearing compression stockings, there are a number that are made by companies such as Jobst, Sigvaris and Venosan specifically for pregnant women. But I would really really recommend a doctors visit first.

All the best
Belinda

Charlie!!

I did liken myself to Professor Klump the other day!!LOL

Belinda..
thanks for the info about the stockings...
We had a baby class yesterday and I was taking a "poll" around the room about swelling... The ladies in there are further along than me.. Due in 2 weeks to 4weeks..They were swollen wearing flip flops.. I spoke to the nurse providing the course and of course she encouraged me to talk to the Dr. on Monday... I will of course...

Friday night I was treking to the poddy about every 30 min or so.. That was a bit unusual for me- Slept from 11;30-2:30 without timing my visits and when I thought 2:30 was 6:30 am I looked at the clock and then started my timing nonsense... TV programs in the US not so great at 2:30 am... How bout where you live?

Anyway... Thank you for your information..I will contact my dr tomorrow...I guess they get plenty of neurotic pregnant women calling in at the drop of the hat....

Have a nice week everyone!!
