Stopping Progesterone

Post by gregmbarry »

Hi everyone,

I had a question. How far along were you all when you stopped taking the progesterone? My clinic recommends stopping at 10 weeks. I still have some left over - so I just wanted to know what you all have done.

My doc wanted me to continue to 12 weeks, but then he said "but... if you're really getting tired of them it would be ok to stop a couple weeks early." He said it was fine to stop them "cold turkey" so to speak and not have to wean myself off of them. :)

Hi everyone. I only just got a BFP yesterday, and my clinic has said I could stop the progesterone straight away b/c the pregnancy will now take over. But I'm worried, everyone else seems to keep taking them for up to 12 weeks. Are there any other clinics that stop after +ve?

HI Bella - I have posted to you as well on the General Forum. I too have been instructed to stop taking progesterone (cold turkey). Your body does produce it's own until the placenta can take over. Your clinic would have checked your blood to make sure it is high enough. You need 10ng/ml to sustain a pregnancy so you must have been way over this threshhold. Your clinic knows what they are doing - so don't worry.

Thanks everyone,

I have stopped taking it as of Thursday and I have a scan scheduled for next Wednesday. I figure if there is anything amiss in the scan - then I'm going to start taking it again....lol....I'm no doctor - but that's going to be my approach.

Seems like everyone is all over the board on this one - some 10 weeks, some 12, some earlier.

My doctor says that the baby starts taking over it's own production of progesterone after 10 weeks. He also said that what progesterone does is builds up the lining of the uterus so the baby has a good place to snuggle and dig in. After 10 weeks this snuggling is complete.

Thanks again everyone!

Hi gregMbarry

the answer varies depending if you had IVF fresh with your own eggs - in which case ovulation has occured - or a FET or Donor eggs in which case ovulation has not occured, personal protocols will vary it is dangerous to assume there is one answer for all.

I had donor eggs for which both pessaries ans shots are used and continued to week 13 and stopped slowly over 3 weeks. Ladies with immune issues are recommended to carry on to 18 weeks, some women - albeit rare-take it right through to the end. NOT ALL clnics test for progesterone before advising to stop, in fact most DONT (SleepyFoy had a bad experience with this). I had to find my own normal curve for progesterone in pregnancy and pay for and organise my own blood tests.

The graph is at:
http://repro-med.net/papers/progest.php

stopping before the placenta has achieved a stable & increasing level of progesterone can cause unnecessary miscarriage, so if in doubt do check.

hope that helps

Hi!

Big J was right... I did have somewhat of a problem with the progesterone levels...Right when they said to stop cold turkey, I requested them to test the levels of the progesterone which was very low- in the 20 range when it should have been in the hundred range.... Long story short... Do what is right for you- request a level check or not... take your health and your baby's in your own hands.. Yes. there are textbook cases, but there are also those outlying variables...

Anyway.. I had a great pregnancy(until now!!) I am being induced on Wed due to Preeclampsia... Hope all is well with you/
