All I know from my specialist is that after tubal reconstuction, your best chances of conceiving is within 6 months after having it done.

We opted for total tubal removal because of hydrosalpinx. Just make sure you have no hydrosalpinx in your tubes no matter what.

If you decide on tubal reconstruction, really prepair your body for a spedy recovery with lots of good food and nutrients.

Good luck with your treatment.

Hi Karina

i had one of my tubes unblocked in November last year. I assume that is what you mean by reconstruction. The operation went really well and I was off work for a couple of weeks and in hospital for 2 days. Since then we have had one round of unsucessful IUI and are now on our second round. Feel free to ask any questions and I will try to answer them for you.

I had a tubal ligation 15yrs ago (whilst in a no-kids relationship). I spoke to a surgeon 7 yrs ago who said you really a specialist to do a reconstruction this as it's micro-surgery. My hospital notes from the op did not (amazingly) have details of whether my tubes were clipped or cut/cauterised. He told me, as Laura said, your best chance is early on as the tubes can close again after a few months. He also wasn't sure that the ectopic risk wasn't slightly higher. I asked my IVF doctor about this a few months ago and he strongly advised us against a reconstruction. Not only was my ligation a long, long time ago but since then I've had a c-section and a ruptured tubal ectopic and so he felt there was too much scar tissue to think about adding more.

Having said that, I googled this and found a US doctor who does nothing but tubal reconstructions, and is thus one of the most experienced surgeons in the world for this op. He performs them 5 days a week and his website had loads and loads of very happy, now pregnant, ex-patients.

Good luck
Debra.

Hi Karina,

Am not sure if you are refering to opening damaged tubes or re opening tied tubes. I had neosalpingostomy last August, where they create new openings at the end of the blocked tubes. Specialist opened both tubes succsessfully and then advised me a 6-12 period to try and conceive and indicated that the sucess rate in this time was from 50% to 80%.

Sadly this wasnt the case for me. It seems that the success of tubal surgery is is tied to the degree of damage to the tubes to start off with. Longer term damage is harder to repair, and the success rates for conception also seemed to be lower if the surgery was unblocking the tubes near the ovaries rather than sugery to the tubes closer to the uterus. So reopening tied tubes seemed to have higher success rates when I was researching back at the time.

Talk through with your docter the implications of eptopic pregnancy and hydrosalpinx (toxic fluid that can be released if you reopen the tubes). Also ask about the kind of surgery involved. More often micro surgery is being used with greater success (i.e. keyhole surgery, using minimal tissue openings and a microscope. I had two laproscopies under general anasthetic and was out of the hospital a couple of hours later with very easy and quick recovery with no discomfort).

You really dont have anything to lose in thinking about this! Good on you for looking at all the options.

Wishing you all the luck with your journey.

Take care
mel

Tubal reconstruction

Post by Sweetness »

Karina,

I had a tubal - ligation in 1990, last January I was looking into the possibility of having reconstruction as well. Through this process I found out this was not an option for me becasue one of tubes is oblitarated and the other has hydrosalpinx. While researching doctors though I found one in Chapel Hill North Carolina. His name is Dr. Berger, and hi is the best in this field, he has a website that is absolutly amazing, so why dont you take a look at it. Before I found out I could not get mine repaired this office mailed me free of charge a dvd on how he does this microscopic surgery. I don't remember the web page but just google the words tubal
reversal doctors, his name will pop up, just read each listing one of them has his name on it. Good luck to you....
