i am very worried about the sedation used in the back of the hand on egg retrieval day.I am going out my mind already and i will be starting sniffing Syneral in a couple of days.At the moment i have asked questions about sedation and all i get told is its to relax you.If this is the case i would be ok but i have visions of myself being in a twilight zone which i would feel completely out of control. Can any one tell me how did you feel during the procedure.IM not screamish about pain im more scared of feeling out of it.Thankyou Tina
For all of my egg retrievals I have been under local anesthesia, for embryo transfer the give me valium to relax me but I am awake for that. No worries, for ER you want the local and I don't think they will perform the procedure without it...maybe a spinal block - but with a spinal you won't get feeling back in your legs for several hours...

Thankyou for your reply, but in England we are given an option of sedation or completley asleep. What im trying to find out is how people feel through the effects of sedation as i dont want to be completley asleep as thats like having an operation.
They put me out for my EC. They do have to put the IV in but that's no biggie if you get someone who knows what they are doing!
There is no way I could have been awake - after my ectopic surgery and HSG I had done, anyone down there freaks me out! So I just went to sleep and woke up and it was all over. Only took me like 10 minutes to wake up and then I got dressed. ET I didn't have anything, thought it would hurt but it realy didnt at all. Most uncomfortable thing about that is you have to have a full bladder! And then lay there for 30 minutes when all you want to do is pee!!
I had sedation for egg retrieval and I slept through the entire thing, woke up as they were wheeling me through to recovery. Didn't feel any hangover effects and was back to normal after 15 mins. It was fantastic.
The effects are dose dependent - if you had sedation but became distressed for any reason they could just give you a higher dose.
Please don't worry about it. If you're really concerned why not ask to speak with the anaesthetist as they'll be able to advise you properly.
I understand things may be a little different in England and just to clarify local anesthesia is mild and you are completely unaware of what is going on the not completely out....which I assume would be similar to sedation which when you wake up it feels like you took a 10 minute nap - after HSG and labor and delivery of my son stillborn and two rounds of endometrial biopsies for endometritis I much prefer to be sedated or unaware....I also understand medically what they do to retrieve the eggs so I defenitely dont want to be aware of that.....General Anesthesia is different - more like what you get with an operation where they have you count backwards and hook you up to o2 and all that....After local/sedation for ER I have been fine...You wake up a little groggy and that gingerale and crackers are the best thing after fasting for so long....After you are completely with it they have me dangle my legs off the side of the bed and as long as I am not dizzy I can get dressed and my hubby can take me home....Don't know if this helps...
Lola, I am right with ya on the transfer - very uncomfortable - full bladder, they press down on your bladder while there is a speclum inside - Its like trying to pop a grapefruit - I have told the dr. every time - my apologies if I pee on you...

hiya tina
just wanted to share my wifes experiance of sedation which is exactly wot you will be having
firstly dont worry
i was with her throuout ec and she was totally with us at all times all it does is basiclly relax you although it didnt work on charlie till a fair way through ec as she was fighting the sedation a bit
but you are not out of it as you are saying it just mellows you out
also you will probably be given gas and air during ec if you get too sore and you couldnt take gas and air if you were out of it now could you??
so stop worrying you will be fine
take care and good luck
richard charlie
ps wot hosp you at??
Thankyou so much for your reply.Iam at this moment in time going mad with worry.I know its going to get worse, but i needed to get this phobia out the way first.Today i was contimplating with my husband whether we are doing the right thing. He was saying he can not bare to see me worrying night and day about something that will be happening in about 4 weeks ,rough estimate as this is our 1st time not sure on how everything works.Have been waiting for this to happen and its become sereal over night. When the medication got delivered on friday i have not thought straight since.Worry can make you think silly and as im waiting for my period i am also hormonal. Then i start sniffing Synarel, .Your reply has made me look forward not backwards.I saw a councellor from the hospital im under but felt good after talking to her but later that evening the thoughts came back with revegence.
Before I had my ec I spoke to lots of people on here who all said they had been knocked out. When I arrived at the hospital I was told that I would only be sedated. I was terrified!!!
When they put the needle in the back of my hand, I felt nothing.
When they started to sedate me, I didn't try to fight it and just relaxed. I can honestly say that I cannot remember a thing and it was completely pain free, even though I was awake. It makes you very very dopey. I had 25 eggs collected, which I think is quite alot and even then it was ok.
After I was made to rest for a couple of hours and then went back to my hotel for a rest. I was fine and felt completely normal after a few hours.
I was worried all that time for nothing.
The nurses and doctors do this proceedure so many times, every day, that they know exactly how you are feeling and know what to do.
I promise you that if you are only sedated, it is absolutely fine.
