First IUI, need help

Post by Xrayem »

Hi guys,

We were just diagnosed with unexplained infertility and were given the option of IUI or straight to IVF. We are going to try a year of IUI's first as I have age on my side and feel we should try the least invasive treatment first. Has anyone else been in this situation? And if so, what did they do? What are the sucess rates like?

Also, I guess I'll be experiencing a 2ww sometime soon as I am up to day 6 on my first IUI cycle. Is anyone else at this stage to coach me through it?

Hi - I just wanted to express my best for you and your hubby. I did my first IUI on 4/8/06 and unfortunately it didn't work, but we are heading onto our second one in May. As explained to me by my RE, the success rate is 10-20%. We felt that we wanted to try IUI with injections before proceeding onto IVF...still considering it as I can only see so far into the future or it gets overwhelming. For me, the procedure itself was similar to a pap, some discomfort, but fairly quick, and then I had to lay there for 15 mins. This is the part I regret - that I didn't bring my husband in with me. It was a very lonely and emotional 15 mins, lying in the dimly lit room alone. Just like in any medical situation, you have to take charge and not wait around for someone to coddle you...I shoud have just brought him in with me instead of worrying about them offering it to me first. My RE recommends 3-6 attempts at IUI before moving onto IVF.

I wish you all the best and baby dust to you!

Dear Xrayem,

I too went thru IUI's x3, I used clomid for stimulation as well as repronex injections, I also have unexplained infertility, but they all failed, so I spoke to the doctors and the IVF clinic and his first question to was do you want to get pregnant, and of course I said yes, so I did first IVF--- got pregnant!!!! Have a beautiful baby boy, I was 31 at the time of starting IUI's, I am 33 now. I would say this is your decision, I am glad I took the least evasive steps first and I reccomend it, the 2ww is agonizing, but this board helps. I hope all works out for you, wishing you lots of baby dust

Thanx guys for your replies!

Lauri- you sound like you're at the same stage as us. I was really excited about the IUI and getting started but then I came onto this site and no-one seems to have had success with IUI's. Its a little disheartening. But I guess you gotta try everything! All the best for your cycle in May!

Puchero - Thanks for your insight. I'm glad IVF worked for you!

Hi

We are in a similar situation. We have done 2 round of IUI both BFN and now have the choice of either IUI this month and IVF next or straight to the IVF. I would say give IUI a try first as apart from the 2ww it isn't too bad.

Good luck
Angela

Ive had 3 IUI's about to start 4th IUI with clomid, but scared!!

I have a friend who was preg after 1 IUI so it does work, you have to have faith and keep positive...

Good Luck xx
