Vanishing Twins

Post by jamato253 »

Girls,

Have any of you had more than one at your six weeks ultrasound and then in the following weeks lost any??? If you did, was there any bleeding or such???

I am curious cause I so far have 3!! I have one strong baby in a sac by itself with a fabulous heart rate of 115 bpm (for 6 weeks thats great) and then I have another sac with identical twins - but they are not very strong - they are measuring small and could only see one heartbeat and it was only 86....

So my question is for any of you that lost one but still maintained pregnancy for the other - did you have any signs, any bleeding, any cramping when the other beanie disappeared???

Just curious, I am prepared that I may loose the twins and thats ok - I know there is one strong baby of the 3 - also due to my cervical issues, my dr's don't want me to carry 3 anyway - at risk of loosing them all...I asked and the dr's said if mother nature took its course - I would not have a "horror show" - the babies would just be reabsorbed.....

I know this sounds morbid but I am just preparing for any situation - like I said as long as I come out with at least 1 I am happy!

Jamato,

I had my first US at 8weeks and saw 2 beanies and 2 beautiful strong heartbeats. Around 11 weeks I started feeling as if something was wrong and went in for a 2nd US at 11.5 weeks. At that time, Baby A no longer had a heartbeat. They figured, based on size, that Baby A's demise happened around 9.5-10 weeks.

At 8 weeks they measured 11mm and 14mm. I didn't realize at the time that the difference put us in the higher risk category for losing one of them. In fact, the doc said "oh, look at those great heartbeats. Well, you've beaten the odds and have less than a 4% chance of something going wrong." Now, from doing lots of reading, I realize that it occurs about 25% of the time when twins are detected before 10weeks and and even higher rate of miscarriage when they measure different sizes.

I did not experiencing any bleeding, just some low back pain and a little bit more clear vaginal discharge. Of course, this may be totally unrelated.

Baby A was still completely visible at my 13 wk US, so it is taking its sweet time being reabsorbed, but that's ok :)

You are lucky in the sense that you seem quite well informed and prepared for the worst. We can all still hope for the best. I was totally unprepared and quite shocked and devastated. It was quite a range of emotions that I went through. Now, I realize that nature did what was intended, and having 1 strong one left is certainly still a HUGE blessing.

Thanks EYCI,

I am concerned cause my dr's want me to carry triplets...I lost my son at 20 weeks cause of incompetant cervix - therefore they say I can risk losing all three if I go for it - If nature doesn't take its course - I may be faced with some hard decisions...If I have three heartbeats at my 8 week ultrasound - I may have to consider a reduction to save the strongest....So I am kinda hoping deep down that I don't have to make that decision...

It certainly is a mixed blessing, and hard to know what to wish and hope for.

Was your incompetent cervix found before or after the m.c.? If it was found after, maybe there is something they could do about it now?

Well, I hope that you find the answers you are looking for. Hopefully you have lots of support from friends and family :)

EYCI,

Actually it was a little different, it wasn't a miscarriage cause I was so far a long - I actually went through labor and delivered him still born.....They found out afterward - my water already broke....This time the will perform cerclage but even with that the weight of three babies is too much

Jessica

Firstly, congratulations - fantastic news well done!!

As you know I was initially carrying twins and at 8 weeks I lost one (termed, the vanishing twin) - I had no evidence that I had lost one at all, no bleeding, no pain.

I hope that the rest of your pregnancy goes well and smoothly.

Good luck

Little P

Hi, I been through the same situation...please take a look of thses links, they may help you...Plz read that I had quads (4) instead of triplets cuz doc. couldn't see one that time...But now I'm carrying Identical twins but good part of this that they have their own sac and they're doing great today...

Thanks JP,

We have decided that we are focusing on what we know to be one healthy beanie right now and we will wait and see what the next scan reveals....My twins do not have a good forward outlook - and I also have an incompetant cervix which makes multiples a much larger danger for me....I am hoping that nature intervenes to leave the best possible chance for the one healthy beanie in there! Thanks again

I am doing well!!! I won't get to see the babies until May 9th, but got to see my OB last week and he feels too that the twins might not make it simply cause of low FHR on one and unable to get FHR on the other...So we will see, right now I continue to cradle and rub my little pouch! and pray for the best!

My nose is running a lot it seems and man I can burp like a champ!
