Hi everyone. I have been doing progesterone injections since my EC on 3/30/06. They are the long needle - 1 1/2" and they go in my butt and they hurt! I have to do them until May 7, at which time I will be switched to the suppositories but I wanted to ask - Have any of you who have done the injections been able to do them in another muscle - such as your thigh? My rear is very sore and I am covered in bruises.
Thanks!

I havn't had the injections but I have been put on the supositories 2 days after egg collection. Why don't you ask if you can switch, either that or phone your clinic and just ask? They should be there for you, no point suffering if you don't need to. What's the worst tey can say, no it has to be in your butt, in which case your have not lost anything.
Best off to just ask those that do this day in day out for thousands of women.
I do injections with the 1 1/2 inch needle and I literally know your pain!! My husband does my injections and he has become great at it...We alternate sides and location - somtimes we go higher toward my hip so that it is not in the same place everytime....He has me lay on the bed so I am not putting any pressure on any muscles and he locks my leg in so that if it hits a nerve my leg doesn't jerk which makes it hurt worse! He also spreads the injection site before injecting and when he holds the guaze there for any bleeding he kinda massages it....Some days I feel like there is a bruise for days and other days not so bad - but that is the only place we do injections....I know last time they switched me to pills at 8 weeks - maybe they can do that for you

OH Ladies... Had my egg collection on 3/30 also (and my birthday) and the transfer 3 days later..found out on 4/17 I'm having TWINS!!!
I will continue on progesterone injections with the 1 1/2 inch needle until June 8th.
So here's my secret , need to continue in the butt, there is no other place, but invest in an Ice Pack. Hold in the area for 10 minutes, then do your shot.
I Promise you will feel NOTHING!!!
Good Luck to you!
My DH stopped putting the needle in all the way.. he only puts it in half way now.. I started out skinny before this whole process and theres not much fat on my rear end.. So the nurses suggested he try only half way....
still hurts like hell.. but..... i guess i gotta do it
Thanks, everyone, for your input. My friend who is doing the injections is an RN and she is the one who suggested the leg muscle. I guess at this point I only have 1 1/2 wks left so I will tough it out!
Also - I use the ice packs and they do help. Maybe I will try laying down like Jessica. I know what you mean about hitting the nerve - that has happened to me a couple of times and it does hurt a lot worse!!
Guess this all a small price to pay for the reward we will get in the end

NO, Don't do the leg muscle. I did that and I could not walk for 3-4 days. The nurse at the doctors office suggested that and boy was that a mistake. The ice pack helps alot, and also alternate sides. I do know what you are going through. I took progesterone shots with the 1 1/2 until 10 1/2 weeks. You will make it.
I do the injections into my butt muscle and I too ice the area for 15 minutes before the shot, lay on the bed and my dh injects it. Make sure though that if you use the ice pack before the injection that you either massage the area for a while or use a hot water bottle or heating pad on the area AFTER the injection otherwise the progesterone in oil will just sit there in your muscle and not be distributed into your body!

I too share your pain of progesterone injections. This is my 3rd attempt and all included progesterone. I feel I never recovered from the other 2 cycles before this one! Anyway, I spoke with my MD about the bruising I had with the injections and he said specifically to apply pressure to the site of injection. He said the needle goes to the muscle and the bruising is from bleeding into the muscle. We had been rubbing the muscle after injections for the other 2 trials and he said NOT TO RUB! That's what the nurse had told us to do and we were glad to find out that is not a good idea as it can worsen bruising. So now we ice (couldn't live without that) and after the injection my husband applies steady pressue to the site for 5 minutes. That's the time it takes according to my MD. I am doing so much better this time. Only 4 more weeks to go!

i agree with everyone here..but the heat afterwards relly helps too..so try and get to packs one for the ice and one for the heat..i sat on the hot pack for 2 hours afterwards..good luck (i had dh heat the pack on and off for the two hours lol)
there is a numbing ointment cream that my nurse told me to use.
i will try and find out the name of it.
i was told not to ice very long as it could make the oil thicker and it wouldnt work as good....
Hey Lisa,
Congrats on seeing your beanie..... So sorry you had to go through that scare. I spotted about 3 nights before my 1st beta, and I cried, did not sleep and was terrified (even knowing that it could be a good thing).
I wanted to tell you that I did get a script for 1 inch needles and what a difference!!!! It barely hurts and goes right in. I would say that one out of 4maybe 5 do I actually feel. I am actually going to stick with the shots instead of doing the "icky, messy, yucky" suppositories. That is how easy and painless they are. As for the ice. I spoke to "our" nurses and they said that you should not ice, before or after. Remember, it is an oil. What happens to an oil when it is cold? It moves slower. The nurse said to use a warm wash cloth after, if it is really bothering you, but the 1" needles do the trick. I have not done a warm washcloth since.
She said that we may need to draw up the oil with the larger needle and then switch it, but we have not needed to that either. Ask for them.

My doctor is planning on giving me only progesterone pills (Prymogina)...is that less safe than the injections? I am hoping for a succesful transfer of embrios (donated eggs). Anyone help?
