nose bleed?

Post by Juliana »

Hi everyone,
This morning I found my 18 month old Alexander covered in blood in his bed. He had a nose bleed, it looked worse than it was and he had stopped bleeding from his nose by then but I started wondering if this is normal for such a small kid. Has anyone had any experience with nose bleeds? he did not hit himself at least he should not have in his bed, although he is such a devil at the moment he might have managed it somehow, although I would have heard him crying. I am sorry to post again with a slightly panicky question, but there is always someone with experience on this site...I try not to worry too much about such things, but still it is difficult not to imagine scary things.
Love to all and greetings from me, Alexander and Nadia. Hope you all had a happy Easter.

Hey Julianna,
Sounds scarey!!
We haven't been through this, but a good friend of mine has, her dad is a a paediatrician and she rang him straight away after discovering for 18 month old covered in blood sitting up in her cot crying. He said that at 18 months it's common for them to pick their noses (sorry if a tad gross) and pick a little bt strenuously leading to bleeding. He said it was nothing to worry about unless it hapens frequently (they sometimes need to get the blood vessels cauterised I think?)
Hope all is well otherwise with your family.
We are keeping well, Annie is 18 months in about two weeks and I am 20 weeks pregnant on Saturday, life is hectic!!!

oh my God Bel! You are pregnant! Congratulations! I am so excited for you! Tell me all about it! Have you been on the boards, how has the pregnancy been??
I remember Annie is just a few weeks after Nadia and Alex, so I thought about her being a year and half soon. How is she? must be talking a lot already! What does she like doing?
Thanks for the nose bleed advice, it was really quite a shock but he was not even crying just playing in his cot covered with blood. Has not repeated since and my doctor also said not to worry so I am much calmer about it now.
Alex and Nadia are a real joy to watch, every day they do something new, they run, walk for hours (really love walks and walking somehow!), say a few words (not very many), but understand everything we say to them and sometimes even obey it. :) They both love throwing things in the rubbish bin, chasing cats (never catch them), but have some habits of their own too:
Nadia loves choosing her clothes and makes a fuss if we do not let wear wear what she wants! Alexander can already make little mishappen Logo towers and is very happy when he succeeds. Most of all he likes to take all my books off the shelves and then rearrange them back. needless to say they are not as pristine as they were before he got this habit, but I am too sleepy in the morning to stop him.
eager for your news, with love,
juliana

Hey Julianna,

I love hearing about your twins, amazing the different little personalities they have too. Annie loves chasing cats as well, we just spent a week with my parents in Sydney and the poor cat looked quite traumatized by the end of the stay. We only have dogs (dh is allergic to cats) so it was very much a novelty for her!! Annie turns 18 months in a couple of weeks, she is like a little parrot, very much copies single words or sounds that we make but doesn't very often string them together as yet. She is great with "daddy", "mummy", "woof woof" (dog) "meow" (cat) etc. SHe also loves to dance and is very very cute waving her arms in the air and stomping her little feet on the ground!!

I am 20 weeks pregnant (21 weeks on Monday), it happened naturally so quite the shock for us after years on infertility and IVF. We actually had the big scan today and all was great, she (it's a girl obviously!!) is growing and really healthy, due on the 4th of September. Two under two..maybe I'll need some coping advice from you!! Any plans to try again for you guys??

Take good care
Belinda

Hi Bel,
How very very nice that you have seen your daughter and that she is growing well! I can imagine it may have been a bit of a shock, in the sense of quite unexpected. I have the impression that in some cases our bodies learn what to do after getting pg once. The next try after my m/c I got pregnant with Nadia and Alex, it almost seemed as if it was somehow easier. So now we are using contraception, beleive it or not! The thing is, dh has now 4 kids (two from the previous marriage), so it's quite enough for him and even though I sometimes long for another, I rather be happy with these two and I could not imagine an abortion, so perversely and probably quite unnecessarily - contraception. As for coping with two, today is one of these days in which I just think I am not coping. They have been quite naughtly this morning and since I am stressed trying to get some small things done while looking after them they miss the attention and misbehave. Still, I guess coping with two is not so different from coping with one, just your freedom of movement gets even further restricted, but I guess you are used to this already, I think for me just giving up my lifestyle which included weekend trips around Europe on a whim was the big change, once I accepted all that was over (for now) I've been quite happy to have trips to the playground. they are just as exciting, when you see the kids go on the slides for the first time, it's like a world trip for them!
But I am getting carried away, let me know how you are feeling, are you a little apprehensive (seemed almost a sin to admit and yet, to be honest, i would be), or mostly happy, has Annie noticed your belly?

Hey Julianna,

Know what you mean about babies changing our lives and liestyles. Johnie and I used to fly down to Sydney fairly frequently, trip down to the coast for a day at the beach or just go to movies / dinner etc on a moments notice. These days, like you, we are much more likely to go to the park, for a walk in the pram or just outside on the swings for amusement, and yep, Annie just LOVES the slippery dip!!!

I am definately excited about this baby, but would be lying if I didn't also admit to feeling somewhat apprehensive about managing two under two. Particularly on days where Annie is a little clingier than normal or needing more attention / time, I just wonder..how on EARTH do women (and men I guess) manage with two?? I'm nervous about the first six weeks as well, I remember a tough time with Annie Boo in the early days, working out breastfeeding, dealing with sleep deprivation and unwanted visitors..AGHHHHH!!!..I think I would be more assertive this time around..hope so!..Annie has started to notice my belly as well, we say to her "where is the baby?" and she points to my tummy, but then also points to hers and at Johnies which is kind of cute. We didn't want to prepare her too early because we thought nine months is a really long time for a little girl.

Time for my nanna nap. Hope your day gets better..Do the twins still have day time naps??

hi Bel,
The twins still have about two hours sleep in the middle of the day, thank god, which is how I have a minute to do some things of my own. I think I am still benefitting from the routine I put them on early on. Today we took them to the beach for the first time ever and they were quite excited, mostly by the sand. The sea they did not notice much which was better, i was not ready for wet shoes and cold feet from the North sea. On the way back Alex slept and Nadia made everyone's life difficult by fidgeting and screaming. That's the problem with two, even if one is being an angel the other one can compansate by making noise for two - but I learned to look at it the other way around, when one is crying their head off I think, lucky the other one is calm. Somehow we hardly ever have them both upset at the same time which is a blessing. on the other hand, the temper tantrums are staring, small ones yet, but they are not even two. Has Annie had one?
I think you will manage better as you now have the experience of how the first months went with Annie, what you want and what you don't want. In our case DH knew visitors are too much and we just asked people not to come in the first month, which was great. A woman I was lying next to after the caesarian had visitors two hour after she was out of the operating room - mad! A whole roomful of noisy people it was too, I guess everyone has a different idea of what is 'normal' after birth. Anyway I almost envy you, I wish I could do it all over again in a bit more relaxed way, i was so afraid of losing them during my pregnancy I never really enjoyed it much.

Hey Julianna,
How are you you keeping?
I'm going well, Annie is having her morning sleep (she has one about 10:30 and then another about 4pm), so time for me to catch up on e-mails and then my nanna nap.
Re. tantrums, oh yes, we HAVE had those!!, I always find it hard not to laugh I must say, Annie THROWS herself quite ceremoniously on the floor, looks to see that I can see her and am watching (usually not!!) and then wails. She has no idea what to do beyond this, just the drop and wail, so she's got the idea I guess..quite hilarious when it has happened at home..am SOOOOO not looking forward to it happening if I'm out and about in town..I think I'd just scoop her up into my arms and take her out to the car and home (hard if we're half way through a large grocery shop..have yours done the public displays yet??, supposed to be hard to deal with..
Know what you mean about being more prepared next time around re. visitors etc. I really hope dh has worked it out this time, he was the one inviting people around left right and centre while I was this breast leaky, crying fool....what a tough time. I think I do need to be more assertive though..
Time for my nanna nap, am exhausted!!

Hi Bel,
I am so glad you are doing well, you sound like you are enjoying even Annie's tantrums so that's a great sign. In our case Alex starts kicking (in the air because by that time I have picked him up) and sort of grunts, although he cannot reach the piercing sound quality his sister produces, she achieves such tones of bitter disappointment that if you did not know what the cause of her crying was you would think someone has done something terrible to her. She sits on the floor and cries, although once she did it when we were walking and then I had to carry her, she produced a kick that almost split my lip. It actually does not happen so often, mostly when they have to leave the playground - they like walking and the slides so much. Most of the time they are quite nice. Alexander even went to check on his sister recently when she was throwing one, he sort of bent down to look into het face and then patted her on the head - the attention produced a fresh outburst of crying of course.
As for me, I am terribly stressed at work and everything is getting to me at the moment. We bought a house, but it is like an empty shell, no bathroom, kitchen etc so we have to arrange for all this and work (i've no holidays left till the summer) and take care of the kids and we have dh's big boys for a week vacation. So it's a bit too much at the moment but as soon as the house is in decent shape and we;'ve moved it should get better. and ultimately, I always feel I am so lucky to have two healthy kids everything else is a small problem by comparison (if only my body could feel the same way about the stress)...

Julianna,
Sounds like you have HEAPS on your plate, the kids, work, the house etc etc etc. Most days I (barely) cope with the kid side of things (I love her dearly..you know what I mean!!). I work a couple of days a week as well, just enough to keep my hand in my profession and keep my skills up. Annie is at home with Johnie one day (he works four days a week) and then goes to day care the other day. Largely she has a fabulous time there, she runs herself ragged as well, comes home EXHAUSTED as I am after a day at work..

Can't believe I'm almost 23 weeks pregnant, my tummy is growing by the minute at present (this could have been related to excessive easter consumption??). Am getting increasingly nervous about managaing two under two, but I know that you survive!!

Hi Bel,
I can't believe you are 23 weeks either :) ! As for managing with two, I guess none of us has the feeling we manage so well, I am always afraid of illness, or of me not being watchful enough and them hurting themselves - Alexander is a prime candidate as he is shaping as a mischievous ball of energy. and work... and getting home from work and hurrying like mad to give them their meal on time and so on. My friend who is a mother of eight once told me that anxiety is perfectly normal state for a mother and she always looks so relaxed. So I guess it's just a matter of accepting it (not that I have managed this so far). Or else, organization? - I was very insecure when the twins were born and grabbed at the routine provided in the Gina Ford book with both hands and this gave me a feeling of being a tiny bit more in control. So maybe you can prepare by deciding how you would like to have things once Annie's sister is there. and it would be such fun to see the two interact! I hope you are feeling well. It is so nice that DH has a day with Annie too - we have a similar arrangement in that DH also works 4 days and we have Alex and Nadia for 3 days a week with a baby sitter - although I think they are bored with all of us by now and ready for the creche, I have to think about this but sometimes the daily routine is all I can manage let alone change...

Hey guys,

Zoe, please, butt in any old time I say!! Lovely to just read your scan news as well. Is all OK now after the bleed???

Have to share my tantrum story with you girls. Yesterday evening I was about to pick up Johnie (dh) from the train station. Annie loves my car keys and will often try to grab them and say "brm brm" (as in car noises!!)..and I always say "Who's going to drive..mummy or Annie". Tonight she replied that she would drive, so I popped her in the drivers seat, gave her the keys and had some fun with her while she pretended to steer and bipped the horn. Anyway, after about 10 minutes of this it was really getting time to leave for the station so I say "come on darling, back in your seat now, time to get daddy from the train"..Annie says "no way no way" and starts gripping the steering wheel really tightly. When I tried to loosen her vice like grip she screamed..well, the teenage boys from next door came running out thinking that Annie was being tortured or something similar..honestly, this scream could have woken the dead...There was no way she was letting go of the steering wheel and so I just had to wrestle her away and put her in her baby seat. We had much crying / wailing / gnashing of teeth etc on the way to the train, then she turns into this ANGEL when she sees daddy....hmmmmmm....I love her madly, really I do...How on earth will I manage with two under two???????

Hi Bel, Zoe,
Zoe, so glad to hear from you! I will look around for other mails to see how your scan was....As for Sam and his hitting prowess, I am so gald Alex is not the only one! I am reminded of him running after his sister and lovingly trying to bang her on the head with the toys at hand...
Bel, I laughed out loud reading your Annie story.. I can just imagine the whole circus and the neighbours coming to see what you are doing to her. I think girls have special powers of screaming, although last night made me reconsider who is currently best in the screaming manipulation department. Monday both kids and I had a summer bug, throwing up and fever. Alexander recovered while Nadia still had fever yesterday. Guess who got me out of bed about 20 times last night! Just as I would drift away to sleep, having assured myself that they are both ok, there would go Alexander from his bed in the other room, u-hu- like an engine starting and then louder, working himself up, till the moment I would open the door to check how he is and then a pitiful smirk and some shivering would indicate that his mother has to carry him. he only settled on me, while feversih Nadia accepted being laid in her bed. and today he kept screaming every time I tried to leave to go to work - I did leave in the end - but what's amazing is how a sleeping-with-no-fuss boy turned into the spoiled devil of last night after 2 day of illness... and then his sister decided she should make a fuss too
love from me and the terrible two,
juliana
