I did smoke until the ET. As of that day I have not had one since. It was hard but had to do what I had to do. I should have quit earlier but like I said it is hard. Not anymore I dont even think of it. I hope not to go back. I did one time go out and drink once when I was on medication. Good luck to ya.

I am so glad to have found your thread.. I also have struggled with smoking.. I so despertaly want a baby but this additicion is so hard.. I have had 3 failed IUI (I did still smoke through those) I have now convinced myself that the smoking did it and it is all my fault..
I am starting IVF the end of May. Stims to start 05/16 and poss er 05/24 I have told myself I will not smoke from 05/16 on.. Do you know will the gum be better than smoking.. If I feel like I am going to loose it would it be better to just do the gum or just sleep and not do either... i dont drink and sometimes I have tried to justify my smoking by saying I dont drink ( I know that is a weak excuse) I feel like such a failure..
good luck to all...

Hello,

I just wanted to let you know that my RE says its not the best thing to smoke, but because i was a smoker he said it wouldnt affect the treatment but to preferably cut it out slowly but definitly none after ET.

Goodluck

Hey girls.

What a brilliant thread! I too am having major stress trying to give up. I have currently cut down from 20 a day to about 5 a day. I am planning on stopping on Monday (not before that cos I've got my driving test tomorrow morning!! )

I am going to use the nicorette inhilator which has helped me give up in the past. I only gave up for 2 mths, but started again cos I didn't really have any "reason" to quit. I have now and I'm hopeful it'll help me.

The inhilators are great cos it gives you something to do with your hands and mouth (though DH said he could also suggest something for that-sorry!! ) and it stops the craving cos it gives you a nicotine "hit".
Its just like smoking a fag (though you do look like a plonker when your sucking on a white tube in the pub!!)

I have previously though that the damage has already been done from smoking and theres no point giving up entirely. Whats your view on this??
Is it better to cut down or stop?? I know it sounds like a stupid question, but a few people have already said that their doctors have said that its best NOT to stop if its gonna cause you too much stress throughout the treatment.

Its bloody hard though and I wish us all lots of luck with it!! :)

Hi

As an ex smoker I can sympathise how hard it is to stop smoking - but you should remember that you are lowering your chances of your treatment working by smoking. Just found this as an example:

http://www.irishhealth.com/index.html?level=4&id=7276

I am just about to start my 2nd IVF and I am paranoid about doing anything that might affect my chances - I just dont want to think about the "What If's" if it ends up not working.

I waited until my cycle had finished to colour my hair, gave up my 10 cups of coffee a day habit 2 months before I started etc etc.... I just feel the need to look back and know that I did everything possible to make this work.

Good luck to everybody and wish you lots of BFP's!

Cheers

Hi Girls,

I know what a nightmare it is - I gave up a couple of years ago and its really tough.

On the smoking theme, I just thought I would add what we found. My DH used to smoke at least 20 a day and has a low sperm count. After the first sperm test he gave up smoking - when he was tested again 6 months later, the change in his sperm was incredible - although it was still a low count it was MUCH better in quantity and quality..... :D So if you can get DH's to cut down / stop it really does make a difference  .

Good Luck

hello ladies
I am so happy for this thread.. I always feel like an idiot because of course we all know that we should not smoke (trying to get pregnant or not) it is so hard.. I have faith that we can all do it.. Maybe this will be our own minne support group.. I am starting stims for IVF on Tuesday so I plan on having my very last one this weekend.. I am going to try to not use anything but if need be I am going to try the gum.. I dont know if this rings true but from what I have heard the problem (among all the other health concerns) is that smoking lowers the oxegen (in the uterus) so I am hoping the gum has a less negative effect.. It would be great if I did not want any at all.

Hello again!!

I've got my knickers in a right knot!!! :x

I told my colleague that I'm quitting smoking on Monday (stupid mistake cos he's never smoked so clearly hasn't got the foggiest what its like to quit). I told him that I am going to use the inhilators and he started laughing & said "whats the point in replacing nicotine from the fags with nicotine from the inhilators!!" He basically said theres no point in giving up unless I go cold turkey!! Theres bugger all chance of me going cold turkey. I'd have turned into Zena Warrior princess within 1 hour!! (minus the body to die for and funky outfits!!)

Is he right?? Are the inhilators/patches/gum (or whatever I use) gonna be just as bad for me?!?! :?

If so, I might as well carry on smoking!!

Oh, I'm all confused & worried now!! Stupid colleague!!!

dumb work guy.. It is so hard when "non smokers" say just quit.. Obviously we want to just quit....uggg
I tried to do some research but I could not find anything on smoking vs some other type of quitting relif (patch, gum etc) most things say dont do either.. I am probably just fooling myself but I think the worst thing is smoking so I have to belive one of the other methods have to be better

Hi everyone. I was just reading this thread and I can totally sympathize with all of you. I quit smoking 2 yrs ago (1 to 2 packs a day) after nearly 13 years of being a smoker. When I found out I had blocked tubes and they wanted to do surgery - my doc didn't want to put me under general anesthesia unless I quit. That was just his opinion. I had already been trying to quit for a couple of years without success. This was the final motivator. I used the nicotine patch, and it did help. Cold turkey never worked. I think as long as you aren't smoking - it doesn't matter what method you use to quit. Get over the smoking habit first, then you can slowly take yourself off of the nicotine with patches, gum, inhalers - whatever works for you. My dh quit last summer - so now we are both smoke free. Everything smells better, and food tastes better. Not to mention we can breathe easier and we don't get sick half as much! It wasn't easy, but I am so happy we quit.

If nothing else - think about how it will effect your child in the future. My best girlfriend smokes and her 7 year old son always smells like cigarettes - it's sad.

GOOD LUCK to all of you. It'll be worth it - trust me.

well im glad i started this thread... :P .....i have researched a little bit... so ive decided the day before my eggs are collected(23rd may) i wont smoke another cigarette.....after 8hours of not smoking your oxygen levels increase....and nicotine levels are all but halfed.....after 24 hours the nicotine levels are gone.....after this its will power....and the way i feel i want a baby more than anything so when eggs are put back a cigarette will be the least thing on my mind  ...well thats what i think....

anyway ive only 7 more days of injections to do...wooohooo....

good luck to one and all.....(silent prayers)

(p.s. ive a scan in morning to see how much the follicles have grown).. i will tune in 2moz.....)

You are right, once the eggs are in you won't think of a cig. I thought it was going to be so hard but after thinking I could be pregnant it was not even a though in my mind. Good luck.

KD
How did your scan go? Are you doing IUI or IVF? I am staring my stims tonight for my first (and hopefully only) IVF cycle.. We seem to be on a pretty similar schedule
