Dear All

Have just printed out my list of questions for Mr Trew - it is SO long & I am still working on it. It is going to be like I have put him in the Mastermind chair. And shining a bright white light at his face. Thought that I could handcuff him to chair but worried what dh would think!!!!!!!!!!

Met a lady today who works in my office. Friend of friend. Different department. She is a fellow ivf-er. % attempts including a recent miscarriage at 6 weeks. She looked at ARGC and thought that it was like factory farming and so decided against. She is at Harley St Fert Centre but she said that Hammersmith came very highly recommended to her. She is doing acupuncture and a quite extreme diet that a nutricianilist gave her. All fish and chicken - no other meats. No booze at all. No chocolate or processed sugar. All chick peas and nuts and the like. I'll on pass any advice I get. I guess anything is worth a try but I am going to become even more of a     mad woman without chocolate. OMG

Lola - OMG Steph's news was utterly amazing - way to go for the Octo Chicks. Amazing.........

Love

I know!!!
I saw your message first and then frantically looked on Ober thread. :D
I came over all emotional - is such good news. And hopefully the start of some good luck in World of Ber.

Poor Mr Trew, I can picture his little face as you clear your throat and say "and my 19th question is as follows - please remember, I can only accept your first answer, if you answer incorrectly I will pass it over to Mr Lavery" - GO Agent B!

Take it easy,

Hi Girls

Thanks for welcome. Lola I like the idea of group discount.

Carolyn I too am compiling a list of questions for Mr Trew I have so many I panicked and rang Hammersmith to find out how long the review consultation is I had this great dread I would be on question 50 and the buzzer would go for time up!

I'm looking into acupuncture as it came highly recommended along with reflexolgy.

I changed my diet for this cycle and for previous one in 2003 not too stricted but no to caffine no booze (boohoo) lots of nuts and seeds, fish and try organic as much as possible.

Its nice we will all be cycling similar time.

Hi Vicki

So did they reveal how long the audience with Mr Trew lasts or did they not reveal in case he wants to run away early from the mad ladies with the questions!!!????

My really cute acupuncturist claims that Mr Trew is very well regarded and that he is very pragmatic & down to earth. We shall see........He also said when I probed him that ARGC is very good (stats speak for themselves) if you are prepared to pay huge amounts of money and go for daily check ups and take weird drugs. He would not tell me what to do but I got the strong steer that he thought that I should cycle again at Hammersmith. Told me that he felt that it was the best nhs in London and that it was probably 2nd (after ARGC) and alongside the Lister for private. Not that he can say that. Not sure that I should on here either  Just 1 persons opinion.

Let me know if you want details of acupuncture. On Harley St but not Zita West prices. £60 for session one and £45 for follow up. Went again today. Quite relaxing. No pain at all. I cannot see how it can do any harm and it might even relax me. He also felt that he would be able to help the quality of my womb lining. He is also nice and chatty and has loads of ladies seeing him so I try to pick his brains. :o

Dh and I went to supermarket and have gone all bloody healthy & organic. Dh thinks that I am going to turn into a nut at the rate that I am eating them.

Stay in touch. Will certainly let you & Lola know how I get on with my grilling on Wednesday. Not too long to wait................I hope that Mr Trew is preparing himself

Take good care.

Hi Girls

Carolyn

They said review consultation time is 30mins average but can get longer if needed. With my list of questions 30mins is just about long enough to read them all out! Poor Mr Trew.
I think Mr Trew is very well regarded I googled him and loads of info came up.
Thanks for infomation on acupuncture, I'm hoping to get acupuncturist near to where I live (Cheshunt Herts).

Good luck for Wednesday not long now.

Maybe you should fax your questions to him first? So, y'know, he can prepare a Power Point Presentation or something? The last time I went to see Mr McFertile he had my hsg results on a screen - it was like The Incredible Journey as we traversed the rolling Steppes of my fallops to the Lido-like oasis of my whopping hydrosalpinx :D
My review appointment not for ages......if it wasn't for this pesky exam
 Just want to get on and do this thing now.

Hope you ladies are well and enjoying this balmy and humid bank holiday
I'm looking forward to Carolyns Mission:Trew debrief - good luck warrior!

Commrades

Thought that I would check in before I leave for mission.

dh is taking me away to lovely hotel to help me through big 4-0 on Tuesday. Could not face party or like so am going to snuggle under super duper duver instead  Can't see my healthy eating regime doing to well. He has booked me a massage and facial so real treats for me!

So I will be lovely and calm and relaxed by Wed am. We then head straight to Mr Trew - rather like an exocet missile homing in on target with military precision. My list is prepared and keeps growing .........

At least sun out today. Yesterday was like winter in London.

Lola - sorry that you have to study - what a bummer

Will report the entire saga here on Wed pm.

So Hello Ladies

I am back - where to start - where to start???

Fab birthday weekend with dh. He is so great. Really chilled out/lovely place - Babington House near Bath. Treatments were lovely. So proud of myself that I had no booze at all & did not really miss it. I am fizzy watered out. dh bought me a lovely single diamond on a necklace. He even bought it himself - unassisted. I was well impressed.

Thanks Lola and Vicki for the birthday wishes. Keep trying to tell myself that life begins at 4-0 but sticking a bit in my throat!

So stress levels started to rise early doors. We set off v early for 12 noon rendez vous. We therefore got there 40 mins early.

Good start - Mr Trew saw us 1/2 hour early. Wow - he got off on so the right foot that I nearly forgot all my questions. Clearly this was his tactic to throw me off balance. He is very down to earth - realistic and practical from my perspective.

So below is a summary of Q&A in case it helps:

- How are Frosties thawed? - Frosties are thawed in singles. They would thaw 2 & then add in singles until we had 2 good ones for transfer. Only takes 40 mins to thaw. 60% likelihood of survival of thaw

- Best 2 back & BFN - why will others do any better? - he said that any of the 8 could be as good as any others or be the one - that is where it is a lottery

- What about 3 now I am over 40? - Not yet but it is not off limits for them. He said if he did now after just 1 cycle then more chance of multiples. If we did a couple more and were unsuccessful then would be considered - case by case basis

- Can Acupuncture help? - Very +ve. He said certainly before to help manage stress and although data sketchy he did believe that it had helped success rates in some cases

- How is my FSH level? - he said that this is an indicator of how you will respond to stimmies - once you have done a cycle then that tells them how you actually respond so FSH level no longer as relevant - although can alter every 3 months - so good cycle now is not a good indicator of whether the next cycle will be good

- Progesterone - injections or suppositories? - he said they are more painful & there is no evidence at all to suggest better results so they have stopped using

- Why 2 day? - He said that they had no evidence to suggest that 5 day would generate better results and that lots of embryos get lost along the way. Again he did not say never but he did say that his opinion was to freeze at day 2 and then use to do FET(s) over and above the 1st Fresh. He said that quoted stats are all for 1 single cycle. He said if you took a lady with say 8 eggs like me, he reckoned the % success would be slightly higher with Fresh + FET + FET than using all to have 1 go to just get say 1 Blast. Guess that this is where expression all ones eggs in one basket comes from. He did not say that he would not let us thaw all 6 in one go and go to blast but he certainly did not seem keen - he would prefer to try to get 2 or 3 additional goes from this batch if he can. He was very dismissive of a 'central london clinic' and clinics in the US where he said that it is all about the 1st time stats and $

- Asked about impact of possible infection which I got post transfer? - Irrelevant - either these two were for sticking or not - no difference

- Bed Rest? - he was very much in the just carry on as normal camp

- What can you do to help? - He said - you don't smoke, you are not over weight (I loved him for saying that 8) :D ) so other than being healthy general - absolutely nothing that you can really do to help your chances

- What is the FET protocol? - burselin to down reg, then patches, then ET followed by patches and suppositories - only difference to fresh is no stimmies, no EC & lower costs

So where we got too. He will not do either FET or Fresh until July for me. He does not know how my tubes are blocked so suggested that we use the 'down time' to do a laparoscopy to see the extent of the damage and if small whether he can dynarod me free or whether they are so badly damaged that this is not an option. So have been onto his office already. She offered me 3rd July. I have a half year to do as I am an accountant so pleaded and she gave me a week earlier. So tube clean up session booked for Mon 26th July. More costs but what the hell....................He will be able to tell me the extent of the damage on the day and then determine next steps from there. I would say that we are tending towards a FET

Hope that this is helpful. I plan to print off so at least I can remember what he said. He was quite positive but mainly on the basis that I responded well to the stimmies for my age and we got a good % fertilisation. He said that lifted my chances to like 26% when lower numbers of eggs and embies would make it more like 5% at my age.

Stay in touch ladies. Any info on laparoscopy appreciated?

At least sun is shining after all the dreary weather. If there is anything else that you ladies can think of then shout as I amy have asked and just forgotten.

Hello Agent

Thanks for the debrief. Sounds like you got all the info. Its very similar to what Mr Lavery told me. Will give some more thought to the blasts. ivf seems a long way off for me at the moment.

Laparoscopy - I had tubal surgery last march. The worst thing about it was the heavy duty laxatives they make you have - not muy bueno. Otherwise, ok. I was out next day, no pain killers and back at work the next week. The scars are really small too.

Glad you enjoyed your posh break - Babington House is lovely :D

bad news on the octos today - poor little R. When other people that you've got to know get a bfn it makes you remember just how angina-giving and devastating the disappointments are in this game.

And on that cheery note, I'm off.

Namaste dudes

Lola - saw Little R's news through her dh's post of the news. It is so s***. Why is it so unfair. Can understand that you are completely gutted for her. Steph's news and then this just serve to demonstrate the extreme highs and lows of this bloody process. She will be in the liferaft with you & Jen1d.

Glad that they are telling us all the same things at least. Guess at least they are consistent. Thanks for the info re-surgery. My tummy is gross anyway so not even thought about the scars. I'll just claim a shark caught me & I managed to escape

Can't wait for the laxatives - at least they might help me lose some weight

Keep smiling - hope study not too awfully bad

Vicki - thanks for checking in and your support. dh sounds like he is doing a great job of looking after you & keeping you fully relaxed. I really only started to stress this morning & then have felt a bit crap this afternoon as going to clinic/hospital means the whole thing just rears its head again. Anyway can feel it passing - have to go to work tomorrow and just get on with it. That should sort me out. Really interested to know what Mr Trew will say to you. It is good that we are able to compare notes

Take care both of you.

Hi Hammersmith people,

Managed to miss your replies until today!!

Happy ( :) belated) Birthday Carolyn.

Great to hear from real people actually going through this nuttiness. Had my first (and actually last) appointment with Margara today (11am arrived really early due to nerves - would have missed you) - he IS retiring so I'm seeing Mr Trew next, but no appt till end of Sep (hey, why not string things out a few more months!).

Good news is as I'm also Camden LA - I could get 2 on NHS.

Margara has recommended 2 bloods over my next 2 cycles, another scan - and an x-ray. I've had one ovary whipped so he's concerned to make sure the remaining one is functioning OK. Also have abdominal adhesions and we need to make sure there's a way to collect eggs.

Have been so preoccupied with age related success rates that I'd forgotten to worry about adhesions and only having one ovary! Got no idea how it will affect my chances. God, is my womb even alright? Will definately prepare an enormous list of questions for Mr Trew for my next appt... It's so annoying having to wait for tests and next appointment. Wondering if I can pay for consultation to at least speed that part of the process, then continue on NHS...

Also interested in acupunture - hearing lots of good things about it.
