Not smiling at 8 weeks

Hello everyone

I haven't posted on this board before, but i had twins 8 weeks ago (8 weeks on this coming wednesday). Both my twins aren't smiling yet or reaching out for things, they look at me but don't really want to interact. I am worried that this isn't normal as most other ppl seem to say their babies smiled at between 5 to 8 weeks. My babies were 3 weeks premature born at 36 weeks 5 days. Can ppl post when they first noticed their baby reaching these milestones?

have you talked with your doctor? try calling a pediatrician..

Jaymee, with premies is their development counted as if they were full term or do you deduct those 3 weeks for a while, ie. making your babies on a par with 5 week olds? If so, you've a few more weeks before they might start to smile.

It's been said before but we never, ever stop worrying and it seems to be doubly true with IVF babies.

I hope you start to get those smiles very soon.

Just to say, no personal experience on this, but Im sure Ive read somewhere about prem babies being assessed by their actual due date not by their birth date for certain milestones, like Debra says.

I also think Debra is right and the few weeks earlier may count if you think of your babies as premies. But there is also the fact that, at least in my experience, none of the developmental milestones are reached bang on target. In our case, with Nadia and Alex born at 37 weeks 5 days, Alex smiled at about 6 weeks, but Nadia waited quite a bit longer. Now I know she just has a different personality. Similarly, she crawled two months earlier than him, he walked about 2 weeks before her. Don't worry too much, (says the one who always worries, agree with Debra we never stop), the smiles will come.

I am sorry i haven't replied sooner but i ran out of megs for the Internet and had to wait till the month changed over .

My babies were born at 36 weeks 5 days and I think they consider full term 37 weeks? If I knew my babies were considered preemie then I wouldn't worry. Does anyone know if 37 weeks ( full term for twins) is still considered preemie for a singleton?

congrats on your twins

mine were born at 36 weeks 0 days. they are 4 weeks old now - how the time flies! andrew looks like he's on the verge of smiling at me. i see it most during the first "daylight" feeding when i get all bubbly and cuddly talking to him (so that he knows daytime is awake time). i kiss his cheeks and say "goooood morning mr. andrew" over and over. maggie isn't as far ahead as he is. she is still just looking at me with no grins...or even a hint of a grin.

i heard that 37-38 weeks is term for twins as well, but they kept calling mine "preemies" in the hospital so who knows. i also heard that 38 weeks is considered term for singletons.
