Pain in arms

Post by madiva »

Hello, I was just wondering if anyone is haveing pain down both arms and or numbness and pins and needles in both hands and if you do please what can be done about it. I am in so much pain all day, but severe at night and the doctor says I can't take anti anflamatory. She seems to think I am retaining fluid and that is what is causing it. She says to stay away from sodium (ok so what do I eat). HELP!

Hi,
The pain you're describing is somewhat normal in pregnancy. It's carpal tunnel syndrome and pregnant women get it becuase we retain more fluid thereby squashng the median nerve as it travels down into the wrist. I'm and Occupational Therapist and see lots of ladies with this condition. We usually make a thermoplastic splint for you to sleep in, give you a soft wrist brace for day wear and start you on some nerve gliding exercises..works a treat!!. I think you're in the states?, you would have either OT's or Physios that work in the hand therapy speciality (in the US they have CHT - certified hand therapist after their name), I would recommend seeing one. Look them up in the phone book or ring your local hospital and ask for for OT or Physio Department and get some info on how you can access this service.
It is treatable and splinting will make a BIG difference!
Good luck!

I called and made an appointment with a orthorpedic. I did get the spints to sleep with at night and seems to be helping a little. I will let you know what he says, but you are right it is carpal tunnel and in both arms that is. It is just so painful. Thanks.

Hi,
The ortho appointment sounds sensible. Certainly in Australia our ortho's don't tend to proceed with a carpal tunnel release (the surgical repair for this condition) during pregnancy for two reasons:
1. It tends to resolve by itself pretty much straight away once you've had the baby, and
2. You can't have a general anasthetic and the procedure would need to be done under a nerve block - scarey!!
But definately worth getting checked out from this angle. Persevere with the splints. Did the therapist also give you some nerve glding exercises? Let me know if he/she didn't I can pm them to you.
Take good care
B
