Fetal Pole/Heartbeat

Post by JenP »

Hello. I am new to this message board. I just conceived after my first try at IVF. I am exactly 6 weeks and 5 days pregnant today.

On Thursday 7/13 (6 weeks 2 days) I went to the fertility clinic for bloodwork and ultrasound to try to see the fetal pole and heartbeat. The doctor was not able to see it and made another appointment. I went back in today and they again were not able to see it and asked for me to come back in on Tuesday 7/18 (which will be 7 weeks). Both doctors actually said they thought they might have seen it but could not be positive.

After my visit today, they called with the results of my bloodwork and my instructions and the nurse told me that if they didn't see it on Tuesday that they will do a D&C and terminate the pregnancy.

They actually did the same thing to me a week ago. They couldn't see the gestational sac and thought that it might be an ectopic pregnancy and had all these plans for me to come in to take a pill to dissolve the embryo. Then 3 days later they saw it.

On Thursday when i was there my HCG was approximately 11,000. Today it was 19,222.

Another side note is that I am also about 120 pounds overweight and I wonder if my weight has anything to do with the fact that they can never see anything properly. Prior to the IVF I had to lose 20 pounds because they couldnt even see my ovaries and they are the size of my head! How can they expect to see some little pole if they couldnt even find my ovaries!

I feel like they are jumping the gun here and I wish they would just give me a minute to relax and let this baby develop. I, coincidentally, have my first appointment with my OBGYN on Tuesday so I am not letting the fertility clinic do anything Tuesday till I get a second opinion from the OBGYN.

Has anyone ever experienced anything like this? At what point in your pregnancies were the doctors able to detect the fetal pole or heartbeat? I am LOSING MY MIND over here!

I personally believe that it is too early to think about termination. You dont even know for sure what is going on yet. It just seems so hasty. Are you having any other symptoms? It seems that you would want to wait and make sure that nothing is happening ya know before you go in there and kill it!!! I wouldnt let them touch me until I knew without a doubt that it was not going to work.

Hi Jen,

Sorry to hear what you are going through.

I agree with Tanya - it is your body and your baby so don't let them be hasty with anything - ultimately it has to be your own decision.

Hi!
I was scanned at 6w and 3 days and they couldnt detect a heartbeat..they told me the same thing- that at 7w if they didnt find the heartbeat, they were going to terminate the pregnancy..
I have never prayed so hard in my life...
Anyway, they found the heartbeat too at my 7w scan- all this was escalated cause i was having brown and red discharge daily as well and they couldnt find a reason for it..
Your hcg numbers sound great, so I'm sure all will work out wonderfully.

hugs,

Hi jen,

I'm with Tanya. It's way too early to be even thinking about termination and am shocked it's even been mentioned at this early stage. My clinic won't even check until 7 weeks for a heartbeat, and even with this pregnancy, when I started to bleed at just over 6 weeks, my early pregnancy unit would only do a blood test as they said it was too early to scan...

Your levels sound fab and don't let anyone tell you, or do anything you don't want until YOU are sure. Some people can be a bit too linical and that's not what you need.

One step at a time. You take care.

Best wishes

Hopefully the OBGYN will do a scan when I go to see her on tomorrow. I wish I was able to see the OBGYN prior to when I have to go back to the fertility clinic. I go to the fertility place tomorrow before work and I am seeing the OBGYN right after work.

I am having absolutely no other symptoms or a reason to believe something is wrong. I feel better than I have in the past 2 years!

I am not letting them do ANYTHING to me tomorrow if they don’t see the fetal pole! My husband and I are all riled up and we are fully prepared to run the hell out of there if they say anything crazy!

Thanks for all your comments. I feel much better after hearing from you!

Jen
You go girl!
Now you have the power over your own body! I am glad that you arent going to let them touch you. I would want to know FOR SURE- as in WITHOUT A SHADOW OF A DOUBT that there was no pregnancy!!! We go through way to much to worry about that kind of thing. Hang in there. Glad that you could come here for support.
