Urine-based HPTs are not sensitive enough - by a longshot - to detect IVF pregnancies in the 1st 1-3 weeks. That is why the only reliable tests are blood tests, which accurately measure hormone levels.
Most home pregnancy tests claim to be "greater than 99 percent accurate" and imply that you can use them as early as the day you miss your period, but a study published in 2004 in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology has shown that this is misleading. The fact is that the amount of hCG in the urine on any given day after implantation can vary a great deal from one woman to another. Laurence Cole and other researchers at the University of New Mexico evaluated 18 currently available tests and found that only one was consistently sensitive enough to detect the levels of hCG that most pregnant women were likely to have on the first day of their missed menstrual period. Most of the other tests were only sensitive enough to pick up about 16 percent of pregnancies at that point, though many were likely to be accurate a week after an expected period was due.
So if you got a BFN it doesn't mean anything since HPTs are extremely unreliable before 4 weeks.

Okay, now scared again!

My wife's first HCG result last thursday was 129. Today it is 489 - is that enough for that period of time? We're worried that it is too low!!

i was just talking with a girlfriend at work today (who happened to miscarry a few weeks ago unfortunately) and she was saying the number can rise and fall a bit. hopefully someone else will come along and confirm or deny that for you and help ease your mind :)

Thanks Jess for putting me on the list :D.

Hi Jeck how are you doing? 1 more week to go. Not sure if i will do hpt yet especially if they are not that accurate. But it is hard having to wait until i see the doctor.

For those testing this week good luck to you all. Sending out positive vibes to you all.

Take care

Kabillion- I have a friend that has a beautiful baby boy...her numbers never once doubled. The doctor told her that sometimes they just don't?

Good luck... I will be thinking of you!

Thanks for the replies! I am a bit nerdy about these things. I estimated that so far my wife's HCG is doubling roughly every 50.2 hours - or 2 hours more than every 2 days. Our next HCG screening is Wednesday when I expect the levels to be in the 900's. For this I will be praying mucho!!

And I will also be praying for all of you as well! We're all in this together in a weird way! Maybe we can give ourselves a name and keep in touch as this process continues for the next 10 months.

How about the Julyosix club? (July 06)... Hmmmm, maybe that isn't that great a name. Anybody have any ideas?

HEARTBREAKING

Post by hellokitty »

It looks like our little bean is not growing. We got our 3rd beta and it is extremely low, only 194. The doctor is giving us another on Wednesday but they are pretty much prepping us for a miscarriage. This will be our second heartbreak. Please keep us in your prayers.
