Rouge,

I was told that my AFP levels indicated very good chance that my baby had a neural tube defect - As it turned out - my level two scan showed that there are no visible neural tube defects and therefore the told us there is a good 95% chance that our baby is fine and this was a false positive - The spine is closed, and there are no brain abnormalities....It was decided that the high levels of the AFP in my blood stream could be related to the fact I was originally pregnant with triplets....WE decided we were happy with the scan and there was no reason to risk the amnio....In your case on the level II ultrasound they can look for the following which are possibly related to down syndrome - nuchal translucency where the measure the skin on the back of the neck, second the look for cleft lip/cleft palate, the can look at the size of the head and growth of the baby - if all that is normal - I would say chances are you and baby will be fine!

We will pray for you!

Rouge, I agree with all the advice your getting here. One other thing on top of what they said...at my 20 week scan the technician said she was looking closely at the 4 chambers of the heart and she said with DS babies there is a xx% (I forget, but it was high...maybe 70+%) chance that if the baby had DS they would have a heart defect or something they were looking for in the heart. So that's another thing they looked for to ease our minds.

hello

When I had the nuchal transluency scan at 11/1/2 weeks, I was told that even when they find someone has a higher chance of DS, most turn out to be fine.
My sisters friend was told (at 16 week blood test) she had a really high chance of DS so went ahead with the amnio, then miscarried a few days later. The test then came back negative!
Can you have the nuchal transluency scan at your stage? we had to pay privately for it but it was just an ultrasound, non invasive. if you dont' want to wait, maybe you could pay to have this scan done to put your mind at rest.

on the subject of names.............you have all chosen lovely names! We haven't decided yet. We do like Flynn for a boy although noones heard of it! And Maisie or Ellie are possibilities for girls. I don't know, its too hard to choose!

Rouge - i also echo all the advice above, but you have to do whatever you & DH are comfortable with. I just hope the advice helps a little....

I can't believe all the names!!! It is so good to see everyone is already naming their little munchkins. I have it in my head that I don't want to name her until we see her, so we have some names on the list like Sophia, Annika, Chloe (all with the middle name Bella).

But to be honest, DH & I have always loved Lucy, and can't help but call her that at times. So it will most likely be decided on the day that she will be Lucy Bella.

Terri - Flynn is a beautiful name and becoming very popular in Australia. I love it!

Hi ahart, Jessica, Kristi, Bella,

Thanks for your replies and your prayers. I'm really keeping my fingers crossed that I'll be as lucky as u gals and that the baby is fine.. I'm looking forward to the Level 2 scan, but also a bit scared abt what they could find out then. I just hope they hv good news to reassure us. But as ahart said, having come so far after so much treatment and tears, we consider ourselves blessed either way. :)

Terri, thanks for telling me abt your sister's friend. So far, everyone I know who's gone thru the amnio have come thru it fine (and their babies were all healthy and normal). That reinforces my decision not to go thru with the amnio. I'd gladly pay extra if there were any safe tests to take... I'll speak to my doctor abt this...

btw, just wanted to say that all your baby names are really great! the few names I'm currently thinking of are (for a girl) Caitlyn or Keira or (for a boy) Aidan or Tristan! :) will wait till we find out the gender before racking our brains further! :)

Ohhh...everyone has beautfiul names picked out! Heather - I love the name Piper..I wanted Sara Piper but DH vetoed it because living in Italy, Germany and Austria - Piper would be a difficult name.

Yesterday I spent the day at the hospital with DH..in fact he is still there  He had a small incident on Wed. night..long story..but he is OK and I need to pick him up in a couple of hours. It was a bit stressful because we don't have any doctors in Vienna (all our docs are in Munich)..and in Vienna there are small private clinics and then one HUGE hospital..I wanted to avoid at all costs the huge hospital...somehow we found the right doctor he runs his own private clinic..so DH has been pampered in the last 24 hours. there is a huge difference in private vs. social health insurance in Europe. Basically everyone has health insurance but the private health insurance allows you better care. Anyway - all the run around yesterday just reinforced to me that I really need to be in Munich about 1 month prior to Isabella arriving (should anything go wrong).

We are still in the middle of a heatwave so I try to get everything done early AM or evenings...avoiding the afternoons for anything strenuous. Feeling good...my little bump is getting a bit bigger..but still noone has given up their seat for me on the metro!

I wish everyone a great - and cool weekend 8)

thanks Bella, I have told my husband what you said so he will probably be even more keen on the name Flynn now! He's from Brisbane. I actually first heard the name on the soap Home and Away!

Rouge, I'm sure everything will be fine and I think I'd do the same in your shoes. If you are in England, you should be able to find somewhere to do that scan easily I think. I had a few places to choose from.

Hope your husband is okay Traci.
My bump is getting bigger too but still kind of just look like I ate too many cakes or something! Am dying to actually look pregnant! I started getting definate kicks 3 nights ago and they happen every night now, its amazing! how does any woman not get soo excited about this? Its the most incredible feeling in the world!

Its sooooo hot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And being pregnant, I think I am sweating more than the average person!

Hi everyone. Wow - I haven't posted in a couple of days and it seems I have missed a lot! Love the names ladies! We have a couple of ideas. We picked Gavin Michael for a boy and Leyna Anne for a girl. Leyna is actually pronounced like Lay-na - so we may spell it that way. We loved it because it means "little angel". Anne is my middle name, Michael is my dh's first name. Gavin - well we just really like that name. We have a pretty generic last name so we wanted first names that aren't too common.

I had the opportunity to take that test you ladies are talking about that detects odds of having a baby with downs, and we turned it down. My doc said there is a 25% chance of getting a false positive. So I wouldn't get too upset about anything. The odds really are very small of anything being wrong with your babies.

I am feeling much better now. The second tri. definitely seems to be the "feel good trimester" for me! I have more energy and also a bigger appetite!

Hope you are all doing well. Have a nice weekend!

Hello Everyone!

Its been a bit since I last stopped in to say hello. I have been really busy. I guess when the second trimester hit and I felt much better I have been trying to do as much as possible before the 3 trimester hits. Anyway

I was told with my first baby that she was deffinatly DS. My husband was in the military at the time and we had military doctors which for the most part aren't the greatest. I had to do 6 months of DS training. Then at my last Dr Appt. the day before the baby was due, they took me in for Emergency induction.. Because the measurments said the baby was only going to be 2 pounds..

So after all of that, with 6 Doctors, several nurses... The entire neonatel intensive care unit all standing in the theater.. Out pops my perfectly healthy 6 pound baby girl!

So the moral of my story is don't get upset and all worked up over the tests and the doctors.

We will find out what sex the baby is on Aug 3rd hopefully...

But the names we have so far are..

Girl - Peyton
Boy- We don't know.. So its obviously a boy!

Hope everyone has a great week! I can't belive im 18 weeks today.. It seems like just yesterday i was on my 2ww...

Danielle

I probally should have switched over a week ago, but I had so much going on. Everyone just kind of stopped talking on the first trimester thread. I am now 14 weeks and 5 days. Everything is going good. I had a scan on Thurs. everything looks good. They think we're having 2 boys and 1 girl. But it's too early to be 100%. I hope they're right. We didn't care just as long as they are healthy. But we were hoping they weren't all the same sex. We have to go next Friday to a specialist for more scans and any tests they want to do to make sure all is well. I'm sooo glad to be over in the 2nd trimester. YEA!!!!!!!
As of June 6th, I'm 8 weeks, first scan yesterday. Triplets. Scarred out of mind!!

Hey everyone! Well, as Danielle said the 2nd T is definately the "feel good trimester". With the 3rd T around the corner I'm starting to feel so different. Less energy, feet constantly swollen, uncomfortable, etc. But of course, still loving every minute of it!

Dottie, I'm so happy to hear from you...you made it almost to 15 weeks already with all 3 babies doing well. Way to go!!

I registered yesterday with my mom at the baby store. It was so much fun. Shopping and picking out every item we need (and then of course hoping everyone else pays for it!!).

I can't figure out names yet. I had girl names, but boy names seem harder to me. And I have to come up with 2 boy names...plus middle names. It's difficult!!! :)
