One embryo or two?

Post by beckers »

Hi, I am just a few days into my first ISCI cycle. I am 27 with no fertility problems and am resonably fit and healthy, with a six year old daughter from previous relationship. The reason for us doing IVF is that my partner has had vasectomy and repeated failed attempts at trying to reverse it.

At my consultation with Gynaecologist at fertility clinic he 'advised' me to only have one embryo replaced at transfer, his reason for this was that woman of my age group have a quite high risk of twins. Although he did say it was up to me whether to have one or two. I am very temted to have two as I know the majority of women doing IVF have two and many actually dont mind the possibility of twins-which is how I feel also. Also there is more chance of it working at all if I have two replaced.

Has anyone else been advised to have one? or has anyone gone against the advice of their Gynaecologist on this issue? Or just your opinion/what you would do in my situation would be greatly appreciated. Or anyone about my age who has had two embroyos replaced - I would love to hear your experiences.

Thanks

Beckers :)

Hello Beckers,
I found your post very interesting as your story is the same as my own in a few ways. DH had a failed reversal last Friday - we were never told that it could fail due to short tubes, is this what happened with your partner? As for the 2 embryo's, if you are happy to be blessed with twins, and you are willing to take the chance, then go for it - I know I would. We are only in the very early stages of looking into possible ways of having another baby, but your question was one that I asked myself too. If we were more comfortable money wise and had the room for 2 babies, then I would go for it - but we are'nt at the moment. Then I think, if your blessed to get pregnant, then you should just be happy with however many you have. It's kind of a hard question, as when we want a baby so very much - anything is better than nothing. Looking forward to hearing from you.
Sharon xx :)

Within the industry, the jury is still out regarding the number to transfer. My opinion is that one is best. Freeze the others, and transfer them one at a time.

Hi sharon

My partners reversal failed because when the doctor found the vas tube and checked it for sperm coming through there was nothing so he told us that there was a blockage further up preventing the sperm from coming down the vas tube and that the only way we could concieve now would be through IVF/ICSI which I was absoluteley devastated about at the time as I had told myself prior to the reversal that if it didnt work and I couldnt concieve naturally then I would leave it at that. I never once wanted to go down the IVF route. But the terrible news of that only seemed to make me more determined and now I feel like I would probally do anything for us to have a baby.

I know what you mean about about whether you have 1 or 2 babies not being important. I just want the IVF to be successfull and that is more likely, I think with having two embryos replaced and if it does work out that we get twins then that would be ok too.

Hi there.

I am 31, and we have the same reason for infertility, except we didn't even try for a reversal, as Dh had his done over 10 years ago. I also have PCOS. I have not been pregnant before as you have either though, ...

I am in the middle of our 2ww now, having had 2 day 5 (blastocysts) transferred. My doc was a little dubious about transferring 2 for our first transfer because of the added risks with twins, but did transfer 2 for us, and hopefully at least one will stick.

Our doc did say that if we were having a day 3 transfer he would have been less worried about transferring 2, so the 'age' of your embies at transfer might be something for consideration too.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

beckers, I would transfer 2 . Ive had 1 faild IVF/transferred 2 blastocysts. 2nd IVF/ transferred 2 blastocysts / ended in ectopic. This is my 3rd IVF/ICSI/PGD transferred 2 blastocyst on day 6. And if this one fails and I still have insurance coverage. I will not hesitate to transfer the 3 I have frozen. I know ghost says do on at a time. But if anyones insurance is like mine. Im lucky if i still have coverage after 3 IVFs with only 25,000 lifetime max coverage. And right know 2days before my beta test i have now symptoms. I am already thinking about how much money I will have to start saving to do the FET next time around. So consider you insurance coverage in your decision. But ultimately its your decision at least at my drs office for each one of my cycles they try to convince you to transfer 1 but its your decision in the end. I was very firm with my decision each time. good luck . I know its hard but you will make the right choice . Good luck with everything wishing you all the best.

I would go with what you feel best.

But I did read a recent study out of Sweden (? or maybe Norway..) anyway..they were finding higher success rates with 1 embryo being transferred..something about it being more natural for the body...you may want to search on google for the study.
