Twins C-section or natural????

Post by joanna »

Hi all,

Still not sure yet which way i will be giving birth and would appreciate any feedback.

My Ob said if the bottom twin was head down then he would be happy fpr me to give birth naturally, but if not then c-section would be advised.

Although i have heard that if top twin is breech then the birth could result in a c-section after, has anyone else had this?

If this is the case i would probably opt for a c-section with both,i am willing to try for a natural birth if possible although it does make me nervous thinking about it, although i know with twins the recovery will be better.

Any views or expeiriences???

Hi Jo,

I have twin girls coming soon and one is breech and the other transverse, so I have no choice but to have a 'C' Section. Before I knew this I did discuss a natural birth with my Consultant as I did not want to be in bed after an operation which a 'C' Section is when I had twins, it would be too hard work. However he suggested in a lot of twin cases one comes natural and very often one of them ends up having to be delivered by a Section. He also said because of my high risk situation with them being IVF and twins he strongly recommended I go for a Section.

I hope it all goes well and you make whatever decision you're happy with

Jen

Hi Joanna

You have taken the words right outta my mouth.
I have had a scan this morning and twin 1 is head down and twin 2 is breech (sitting on twin 1).
I did ask my ob but he didn't answer very clearly and discussed more the issue of when I went into labour and how twins were normally at 38 weeks - I know that!!!
I have also heard that in this situation they deliver the first twin vaginally and then C Sec the second. Personally, if they are going to cut me open, I would rather they took both bubbies out at the same time rather than both experiences.
I do agree I would like to have a normal birth and that it's safer, but I was cut open after my Ectopic and I was out of hospital within 4 days and recovered really quickly, so I am not at all worried about having a C-Section.
Let me know how you get on.

I'm the same as Chelle. Twin 2 is breech. My doctor also said that I could try to have Twin 1 naturally, then they would either A) turn Twin 2 or B) pull twin 2 out by it's feet. If neither of those worked then they would do a C- on twin 2.

At first I said, forget doing both, I'll just do a C. But the more I read about it, I've found that's pretty common to have Twin 2 breech and this method of trying natural is common. Then after talking to a friend who had twins, that's what she did. They were able to pull out Twin 2 by it's feet.

So now I'm considering trying natural for both and if I end up with a C for the second one, then I guess I'll just have to recover from both vaginal and C delivery.

I also know that I have to have my "most desired plan" in mind, but I know that anything could happen and my plan may not matter anyway.

I'm glad you asked this question because it's been on my mind, so it's nice to hear what others think too.

Thanks for this thread. It's really interesting as I have no strong feelings either way and I'd like to have a few points to put my consultant when he next brings upthe subject!

Hey guys, Joy is right. I did Lily head down, and Alyssa was pulled out by her feet. The breech didn't cause extra damage, as it was immediately after, and the doc was excellent. I only had to push to get her head out.

Thanks for sharing, Denise. I think I'm going to try for that too. I was hestitant at first, but now after hearing from a few people that successfully did it, I'll opt for it, if all goes as planned.

Hello ladies

I had my twins in May. Very early in the pregnancy my consultant booked me in for a C-Section. All through I was sure that I wanted to have them naturally. My son was very acrobatic and turned round several times in the last couple of months.

I went to 38 weeks and on the day of delivery they did a scan and found that he was breech although my daughter was head down and would deliver first. They told me that they could induce me but because of his position there was some risk to the 2nd twin. For me that was enough to make the decision.
(They also said that I could go through hours of labour and end up with a C-section any way)

I had gone through too much to jeopardise my little ones. Both DH an I agreed that the best thing for us all was c-section.
However, it was hard work looking after 2 babies afterwards. I was lucky that my DH & my family were around me all the time to help.

My twins are beautiful and were delivered safely. I dont think they suffered in any way being delivered by c-section. I would not do anything different if I had to make the decisions again.

Very best wishes
Ange

Ange, thanks for you story! Interesting that they flipped a lot even in the last couple of months. My doc made it sound like they likely wouldn't flip because there wasn't enough room. So I'm glad to hear that. I plan to do the same if there is any amount of risk at all with trying A naturally and them flipping or pulling out B. I prefer naturally with both, but have no problem forgetting that in a heartbeat if a C section is recocmmended because of any amount of risk. Thanks for sharing!!
