5 Day Transfer on 8/13

I just received my embryologist update for today and as of day two, I have (8) embryos rated good ranging from 2-6 cells and (3) rated fair ranging from 2-4 cells. I am now scheduled for a 5 day transfer this Sunday.

Are there any IVF'ers out there with success on a day 5 blastocyst transfer? I'm just so worried about everything thing that could happen between now and Sunday!

By the way, those progesterone shots really hurt. All the other injections I did myself; they were easy and painless compare to the projesterone My husband needs to chase me around the house with that 1.5 inch needle! Any tips?

Hi Angie -
Looks like we are cycle buddies - I had my retrieval on Tuesday too but am having a day 3 transfer tomorrow. From what I have read, if you have a good number of embryos and are on the younger side, a day 5 transfer is the way to go since it gives them the ability to really see which are the stronger embryos that are more likely to develop into babies. Otherwise they might not know and freeze the "golden egg" while putting one of the weaker ones back in you. The downside is that you lose more along the way as a certain number always stop growing every day so you are less likely to have embryos left over to freeze. I have had two friends who were successful with day 5 transfers but they were both really nervous about going that route as they were scared, like you, that something would happen. But, it worked for both of them!
I chose to do the Day 3 transfer as I am 41 so it isn't likely that many of mine would make it to Day 5 outside of the uterus (apparently the petri dish is a little more stressful for them but because of that selects out the stronger embryos). Also, I have to travel on Monday so didn't want to travel the day after the transfer.
I have 19 embryoes but they are all on this, Day 2, only 2 or 3 cells. I thought this meant that they were poor quality but did your embryologist grade some of your 2-cell day 2 embryos as good? I thought that if they were less than 4 it was hard to give them a good grade - but I am in having my treatment done in Brazil and things might be different here. I am hoping that in the US, the fact that they have fewer cells doesn't necessarily mean that they are not rated as good!
I'm getting progesterone gel vaginally but I remember that the one time I got pregnant (which strangely occurred naturally after my first IVF cycle - I miscarried) I had to take shots. They really did hurt! Pharmacists here can give shots and I closed my eyes and never looked at the needle, which sounds like it was a good thing if it is 1.5 inches long. But I'll gladly do it again if this one takes!!

Day 5 blastocyst transfer is probably the most successful kind. One physician claims rates above 80% with them. Of course, not every patient has day 5 blastocysts to transfer.

My RE only does blastocyst transfer and has had a lot of success with it. Good luck with your ET this sunday. I'm sure you'll do great. Be sure to keep us updated.

I go to Dr. Shapiro. So far everything is going well. I have my baseline U/S this Saturday and should start stims the same day if all goes well. Which RE do you see?

I was a day 5 transfer with two embroys and I just got my BFP yesterday. It will be confirmed on Sunday. I had six at day three and then four of them died off. At first I was bummeb because I had nothing to freeze but if I did a day 3 transfer they could have put the "less strong" ones back in my and it might not have been a success.

I did some research and day five, if it is a possiblity, is the way to go.

As far as the progerone shot....I ice it up for about five minutes. I then breath heavy (like a puffing out without breathing in, almost like hyperventilating) and that drowns out hte process. My DH then takes a hot wash cloth and messages it. It has helped tremendesly. The first few days (without these tricks) I thought I would never make it through. Now they are like the others, very tolerable.

I've been having the pessaries twice a day since EC then when I got the BFP my blood wasn't high enough (only 49 and they like over 100) so I was put on the injections too. My needles are 30mm which is 2 inches! I'm so bruised and numb but if it keeps the little one in there then I'll put up with it! 5 weeks down and only 2 more to go with these!!

I did ask about the needles but they said they need to be that length to enable the injection to go into the muscle

They told me to wiggle my toes as the needle and injection goes in as this relaxes the muscle. I find deep breathing helps. Rub the ampules in your hand for about 5 minutes beforehand. This will warm them up and make them easier to flow. As they are oil it is better to put a warm cloth on too as the ice will clogg the oil - though saying that it seems to work for Sam.

I'm currently on day three with (11) embryos all 4 to 8 cells grades rainging from fair to good. I'm expecting attrition between now and my day 5 transfer. Hopefully I will be as lucky as Sam.

Good luck tomorrow Angie - I am sure that with 11 you will have some to transfer. I had my transfer yesterday and it turns out that the MD was reading from the cell counts from Day 1 and not Day 2 so I had 4 8 cell, grade 1 (the best at my clinic) embryos to transfer, which of course I was happy with. They had 12 others to freeze ranging from 5 to 8 cells. Now I am wondering if I should have gone with a Day 5 too since maybe they weren't able to pick out the best ones but I read that at my age, day 5 is risky at best. Also traveling 20 hours on a plane the day after the transfer still isn't appealing.

Hi there - can't comment personally on the 5 day blasts but looks like there are others with good experiences to share - good luck!

I'm taking 2-3 PIO shots a day due to some complications and like to change things up a bit depending on my mood. Ice for a few minutes does help to numb the skin where all the nerves are, but then you have a harder time pushing all the liquid and making sure it doesn't clump. I always follow with a heating pad when I do use the ice for numbing. Lately we just go for it to get it out of the way - Ive even started sticking my self on the right side if I don't feel like waiting for DH. The key is a quick, smooth poke (not too much of a jab though) and slow steady push of the liquid, along with rubbing and heat to help it settle in.
