progesterone shots vs. suppositories

Post by gigi »

do any of you know anything about the shots vs. the suppositories during first trimester? a friend of mine did ivf and her progesterone is low and she was also using the suppositories. I have done the shots but nobody has even tested my progesterone since my last beta?

so...which is more effective, shots or suppositories?
and 2) did you all have your prog. levels checked during first trimester?

thanks,
gigi

Hi gigi,
I get my progesterone and estrogen checked every time that I go to the RE along with my HCG. I don't know if the shots are better than the suppositories, but from the medical knowledge that I have as a medical student both methods are a main line to the uterus. So no one should be better than the other.

Gigi,

My RE said that the shots are better, since with the suppositories, there is no way to know how much is actually be absorbed. I have my progesterone level checked every 2 weeks. It has been between 34 - 48.

Tammy

Hello,

I have been taking pessaries since EC and I had my progestone checked when I had my beta, it was 49 (they like it to be over 100) so they put me on the shots as well. It was checked a few days later when they did the beta again (it was 400 then) but haven't had another one since. That was 5 weeks ago. I've only got 2 more weeks then hopefully my but will regain feeling!

Hi,

cant tell you which ones are better, but i dont think there must be much difference. at my hospital they never checked my levels and i ended up with 2 +ives, so for me the suppositories worked (although messy) so again it varies from clinic to clinic

good luck

Jo,

When you do the shots, were you taking a 1/2 ml in the syringe? I'm taking that I believe. It's in an oil. I need to find out if mine is normal and why they aren't testing it at all. Very interesting that the rest of you gals have been tested regularly....thanks for the input. My friend was doing suppositories and her level was 8....so they just put her back on shots.

Hi Gigi,

My clinic always does the PIO, however I did not want one more needle so I am doing the suppositories. It is Crinone and not messy in the least. Very easy to use. Two other girls from my same clinic are doing the PIO and there projestrone level 1 week after ER was in the 20's. When I got mine tested 1 week after ER it was 209.4. So I think the suppositories work very very well. At least for me they do. But everyone is different and maybe I just absorb them better...

mine is the oil, 2 mls every night in the syringe with a needle of 30mm! My clinic usually only test you when they do the beta test which they did for you also. I was only tested again a few days later because my result was considered low but as they were happy with the next one I haven't needed to be retested.

Everytime I went to the clinic I asked if I could stop taking them but have been told I have to take them till 11 weeks so not long now! I have to take the pessaries until 12 weeks - although they don't hurt they're really mucky!!

I took the shoots during my first IVF. I hated them and they gave me nerve damage on one side. When I started my second IVF I begged for a replacement for the shots and they gave me Crinone. The drawbacks to this med is that it doesn't really show up in your blood. Everytime I get blood work they test for prog but my score shows up really low. Friday it was 9. They asked me if I was bleeding and since I wasn't they told me to keep doing what I am doing.

Here is my opinion, if you don't hate the shots take them because it is less to worry about. If you can't stand another needel the Crinone is great.

Gigi

I wanted you to be assured that you are not the only who isnt being tested for the progesterone levels. I was never tested either. I had an allergic reaction to both the suppositories and the injections so my doctor had me on oral progesterone till my 10th week and i guess it worked for me. I wish you luck and ifyou have any more questions please feel free to ask.. Take care
