Any good breastfeeding books?

Post by Tracii »

Just wondering if anyone has found a good book about breastfeeding??

I plan on BFing....but also scared to death..my sis had a horrible time at it (and has of course scared me  ) so wanted to read up and get as informed as possible.

Hi Tracii

I bought 'What to expect when you're breastfeeding...and what if you cant' by Clare Byam-Cook and have been lent 2 NCT books by a friend. 'Breastfeeding for Beginners' and 'Book of Breast Feeding'.
I did most of my reading before my DD was born, but I think they all gave me background knowledge and good tips. I also got a lot of info from my NCT classes.
Im sorry your sister had a bad time of it and can understand why you feel scared. Have you any friends who have breastfed successfully? I got a lot of support from my best friend who breastfed her 2nd daughter until she was 17 months. Her 1st daughter she fed 8 weeks and gave up because she kept getting conflicting advice from other people and she wasnt sure her daughter was feeding 'normally'.
I have to say, there is a lot of conflicting advice from health care professionals as well as well meaning friends/relatives and I would say follow your own instincts. (I found it easier to get breastfeeding established once I was back at home). I also realised (After talking with mums from my antenatal class) that all babies (and mums!) are different, from how long each baby feeds to whether you can express milk or not.
I was lucky, I only had minor difficulties (Big tip - Lansinoh is the best ointment for sore nipples!!) but breastfeeding has been a wonderful experience for me and my DD. (Not to mention, its free and I havent had the hassle of sterlising and heating up formula).
I wish you all the best for your babies birth and however you decide to feed her, as her mum, you'll know whats best.

Take care
Love Kim
