Defrosting

Hi there
If and when you have had FET, how many embryos have they defrosted?
I am about to have yet another FET and they want to defrost six embryos to get the best two. I just feel that this could be three more attempts (if this doesn't work) rather than one and then having to pay another huge sum of money.
They tried this last time round and I insisted that they defrost two at a time and see how good they were. The embryos were good enough to use but the treatment didn't work.
What do ya think?
Lissa
x

Im not an expert(am on 2ww after FET) but this is what we did

We had 9 Embryos, 4 which were frozen next day from EC(so not sure what grade/quality etc) & 5 that were frozen after 2 days I think(these 5 were graded at grade 2)

Originally our nurse said they would defrost the 4 & if they did not survive would defrost from the batch of 5.

I like you did not want to waste any so we agreed they would defrost 2 out of the 4 and then the batch of 5 as back up(these do not take long to defrost as frozen later)

We were pleased because they defrosted 2 of which 1 died and then defrosted 1 from batch of 5 so we still have 7 embryos left(2 frozen next day after EC & 4 frozen 2 days after EC)

When we had FET embryologist said 1 embryo was looking very good & the other was not so good, albeit was alive........

I hope this helps & is not too confusing. Check with your clinic as they may not actually defrost 6 all at once, may stagger it......It depends what stage they were defrosted at as too how long to thaw.

I am doing drugs induced FET, are you or are you doing natural cycle?? If you are doing natural cycle it may be that they cannot do it in stages because of timing but with drugs they can hold back ET for a day.

Good luck & keep us posted.
Sarah
xx
p.s how many embryos have you got frozen?

[Edited by SJ BROWN on 23-Sep-03 07:06]

Hi Lissa,

I've never had any frosties myself, but I've heard it sometime depends also on how they have stored them - if they store them in pairs (or more) then they can only defrost the 2 (or more) together (and can't re-freeze). I've known of people who find out this shocking news only when they are defrosting, having expected them all to have been stored separately.

Hopefully this won't apply to you so if you can, stick to what you want and even so called lower grade embryos have been known to result in a pregnancy.

Good Luck.

Fiona xxx

Hi Girls
Thanks for your replies.
I am going to get them to defrost the whole lot and take the best two. They explained that they would put the embryos in a blastocyst culture to make them continue to grow before they put them in so that they are six cell before implant. Don't know why they haven't done this previously, maybe they have but just haven't told me.
If this round doesn't work I am going to try another specialist as I have found the Lister to be a bit of a conveyor belt.
Sarah - I have six in the freezer and am doing a natural FET. I am doing hormone testing at the mo waiting for ovulation then they can implant. Fingers crossed.
Wishing you all lots of luck
Lissa
x
