Has anyone had this test? I worry about the miscarriage rate of one pecent associated with it. Since I'm 39 I feel it's important to be aware of any chromosomal issues that could occur but I don't want the baby at risk. Would love to hear your thoughts.

there is another test that I had done at 11.5 weeks here. Its a nuchal transluency scan and its non invasive, its just a detailed ultrasound. It has a high accuracy (in the 90's) of detecting any abnormalities.
they did a blood test and scan and then gave me a % risk of having anything wrong. Mine was good so I left all alone after that.
I know someone who had an amnio because her blood test came back high risk for downs. the amnio results then came back negative. She miscarried a few days later. I know its a low risk though.
However, if I had a blood test that showed a high risk, I still might have considered an amnio.
I too had the nuchal fold scan but I think you're too far gone to have one of them. It has to be done between 11 and 14 weeks. I was lucky as my risk factor came back really small.
Although the risk of cvs and an amnio is only 1:100 there's still a risk.
If the results came back positive, for example the baby had down's symdrome, would you still want the baby?? If the answer is yes then there's no point in having the test.
At the 20 week scan they look for physical abnormalities.
I really wish I could help you on this one but it's going to be something only you and dh can decide. It's not a light decision to make either.
Good luck with whatever you choose to do. Hopefully someone who has had one will post.

I have not heard of the nuchal fold scan and intend to inquire about it now. I am 9 1/2 weeks pregnant. It's all scary stuff but knowledge is power for me. My son was born with some disabilities and I wish I would have known so I could have been prepared for some of the issues. I haven't heard of anyone except for your friend miscarrying before. That is just heartbreaking. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Gigi,
I was 36 when I was pregnant with my daughter. I read about all prenatal tests and the related risks. I opted not to do the CVS and decided on the nuchal (triple screen) instead. If my results came back showing an elevated risk for abnormalities, then I was going to do an amnio. In the end, my results were fine. I do remember having the amnio conversation with my husband again while waiting on the results. In the end we decided that even if the risk was high, we couldn't imagine the idea of a miscarrage.
On the other hand, my neighbor is pregnant and just had an amnio. She has downs in her family, and was extremely stressed about her pregnancy. Nothing but an amnio was going to ease her mind. She had the test, did not miscarry, and was able to put her mind at ease (her baby is fine).
It's a very personal decision. Read as much as you can about the tests that are out there. Unlike having and amnio or CVS, the nuchal isn't 100%. It's up to you if an 80% or 90% result is enough.
Good luck with your decision, and enjoy your pregnancy.

I say the exact same thing most of these ladies are saying. I acutally went to the hospital for the CVS test and was sick to stomach with nerves. I ended up not going through with it. Then I did research and found out about the nuchal test also. I had 3 days left in the window of time they would allow me to do it (13 weeks they told me). So they fit me in. They do it through an ultrasound so it's completely safe. They also did the combined blood work (at 13 weeks, and then again a few weeks later). It gave me an approx 90+% accuracy. It wasn't 100%, but 90+% was enough for me.

By the way, Gigi, I failed to tell you good luck in your decision. It was a very difficult few weeks for me trying to decide between CVS & Amnio...and then Nuchal, etc. I think that decision caused me the most stress & worry over anything else with my pregnancy. So I know how you are feeling right now.

thank you so much for your concern....I am struggling with this decision. I really want peace of mind and it seems CVS would be more absolute...Not that CVS means everything is fine if it shows there are no chromosomal issues. It would be nice to exclude some worry if possible. I will keep praying for guidance on this one.

I decided to forego the Nuchal Translucency (Triple Test) as studies have shown that it is not terribly accurate and can cause undue stress for no reason. As I will be 41 when the baby is born, I decided to have an amnio done at 16 weeks. The amnio actually carries less risk than CVS and is more accurate....1:200 risk of miscarriage as opposed to 1:100 but this can vary depending on who does the procedure.
The test was quick, simple and painless and I had preliminary results within 24 hours. In my case, the relief the test provided was well worth all the prior stress!
This is my experience only....obviously,you need to make a decision that you feel comfortable with. I wish you luck with your decision and if you do go ahead with the procedure, I hope it all goes extremely well and the results are fabulous!
Cheers
Heather

My friend had this test done since she was 35 when she first became pregnant. She was told that the baby had a 75% of having Downs Syndrome. Needless to say she stressed for months only to give birth to a healthy baby girl. If you plan on keeping the baby regardless of any sickness or abnormalities, I say forego the test and wait for the baby to be born. That way it's no risk to the baby and any diagnosis will be 100% at the time of birth.
I had the NT scan and was assessed at 1:8000 for downs...but after a discussion with DH we decided to do the amnio as well...to prepare ourselves mentally if need be....I had absolutely no problems. But it is a personal preference.
I feel that I want to be prepared mentally but am so worried about the risk. The only bad story I heard is from the one post about a friend losing the baby after the amnio. For the most part, I have heard only positive stories. I am a worrier in general and really want to be prepared for whatever outcome. I know first hand that amnio and cvs can't guarantee a perfectly healthy baby. It's really all out of our control in the long run. I am already inlove with this little one and am going to speak more to the doc about the risks. I am also doing lots of prayer to protect us during the procedure if we choose to do it.
