Hi! Question about starting the whole IVF process. I am scheduled for IVF in October but all the nurse said to me was "call when you start your period in September". Is that when all the "fun" begins? Is that normal? When do you normally start the shots in your cycle? Is it different for everyone? Just curious, I feel a little in the dark about the whole thing. Thanks!
Hi leah... i am starting my Lupron injections tomorrow (down regging) but i had to call them on day 1 of my last AF (august 28th) and go in for a scan and blood work that is the start of your cycle they should call later with your FSH and tell you to either test for ovulation or (like me) get a blood test done that will confirm you ovulated and then you start down regging (one week after ovulation)it really depends on what kind of cycle they have you on...did they give you a cycle sheet yet?
so my cycle goes like this....
day 1 of AF (Aunt Flow...period) i call arrange to go for scan and bloods on day 3
i wait till day 19 and go for blood test to check i ovulated start Lupron
i take this for 14 days then go in for surpression check
if surpressed i start Gonal f..along with reducing Lupron from 20 units to 10 units....i do this for 5 days then they start to monitor more closely measuring follies growth and hormone levels...usualy about another 5-10 days depends on how my follies react then told to take trigger shot ...EC...3 days later ET...tww crazy time...
i hope this helps ...best of luck on your cycle...Debz

I am different from Aunty Pebbles. I had to call on day 1 of AF (Aug. 25) they started me on BCP's on Day 3.
I go for one Lupron shot on day 21 (this Thursday). I will start another period in 5-7 days and call again on day 1. Day 3 Ultrasound and Bloodwork and if everything is lookin good I start stimming (shots). Then around day 15 ER and day 18 ET, then the 2ww. Hopefully by the end of Oct. I will know if it worked.
Do you know if when you start they will put you on BCP's or Lupron? It's a pain having to wait and take the pills every day, but I guess it's worth the wait. I am just ready to get going.
Wow, everyone is getting started! I am so excited! I am expecting my big box of meds tomorrow morning and will do first Lupron on Sunday. I'm a little nervous about the big box of needles . . . I will definitely not lay them out on the counter for fear that I will pass out!! That DOES seem like torture to me!
A question about ICSI since it was recently brought up . . . we don't have male factor problems but our clinic allows you to choose ICSI if you want it. It doesn't add hugely to the cost (about $500 I think-a drop in the bucket compared to the rest of it!). Anyway, is there a reason not to do it? Does it increase odds of fertilization? Does it increase odds of unstable embryos? I was thinking about maybe seeing if they would do half and half but I'm not sure. Any thoughts?
Cheekymonkey-I have to ask, are you British? Hubby calls our son (and me) cheeky monkey all the time and he's from UK-I had never heard the phrase until I met him. Thanks for your interest in our adoption-it was a fantastic experience and I would be happy to share it with you if you become interested. We definitely want to adopt again at some point but really want to have a bio child as well. We won't adopt again until we have done everything we can for a pregnancy. I feel like this is our last chance for a pregnancy and we're not ready to give up yet!! Best wishes to you for this cycle-I've got my fingers crossed for all of us!
Hey Jen i also use the term cheeky but its usually followed with bugger...bet your hubby will have used that one too...LOL..(im a brit...my american hubby imported me )
i got a bit freaked when we picked up our meds today the HCG shot has to be mixed i was like ooo i cant do that i will get it wrong...my hubby just took the box off me and made some kind of sound..(translated:your not going anywhere near the mixing meds)...
Jen im from the september thread we had a wondeful lady on there who had 20 eggs she did 10 icis and 10 ivf i will ask her if she can pop over and maybe she will be able to give better advice....
lots of love to all...read you soon...Debz

You made me feel much better!!! I know everyone is different and I may not have to do as many meds as some because my ovaries are already working overtime. I can't wait to get this ball rolling and I am afraid I may get pushed to November. Thanks again!
Just spoke to my RE, and I start stim shots tonight! I guess I am first in line. I am tenatively scheduled for retrieval on 26th and transfer on 29th with PG test on Oct 10th. I only had 8 follicles counted today, which is standard for me. My left ovary never seems to have more than one or two - my right is a dominant ovary according to my RE. So, we'll see how it goes and hopefully all these will respond well. I take 6amps of Menagon (same as Repronex but from Italy) twice a day - my DH will be gone Thurs to Monday so I have to get my friends to do that shot in the morning and evening when he's gone! It's such a pain!
Jen J - I did ICSI last time with all of mine. MY RE wanted to give me the best possible chances and eliminate the possibility of any potential fertilization problems. I will do it again this time.
Good luck to everyone and I hope some more of you will be following stim shots shortly.
Well ladies I get to join all you ladies now My baseline went well. My FSH level was good. The only thing the doc said is he would like to see more of the little pre-folicals. I had 3 on one side and 2 on the other. So he upped one of my meds. Starting friday the 15 I take 225 of Gonal F in the am and .30 f hcg in the evening for four days. Then I go in for another scan on Tues. to see how I am progressing. So I am looking at egg retreival around the 25th. so they said.
The didn't perscribe lupron which seem very differnt from most people.
I am excited.
Good luck to all of us ladies and may God bless us!
Thanks for all your welcomes.
Aunty Pebbles...thanks for adding me to your list..wish I had something to put up there.
Went to see my DR. today and have next plan of action (sort of), I may start Buseralin on Sept. 29 if I ovulate in 10 days??
I am eager to get going again!
To everyone that included me in there messages...Thanks...
And because there is already a Jenn (like me) everyone can refer to me as Jenathan (my name crossed with my DH's, Jonathan).
Aunty asked me to pop over to see if I could answer any questions about ICSI. Our problems are mainly that my tubes were blocked, and then have been unblocked. DH also has slightly lower than normal sperm count and motility not as good as it could be. We ended up with 20 eggs and were planning on only doing IVF.
When the embriologist came to see us after EC she said that she would like to try something different and do IVF on 10 eggs and ICSI on 10. She advised us that ICSI normally has the better fertalisation rate but IVF can produce the better eggs. The plan was that we would use the IVF eggs unless they didn't fertalise in which case we would use the ICSI ones
After one day she phoned to give us the results of the overnight. Of the ICSI eggs 8 were mature enough to inject and 6 fertalised. Off the IVF eggs all were treated and 7 fertalised. At that point it looked like IVF was more successful.
However when we went back the next morning the doctor asked for permission to keep my notes for teaching purposes as apparently we had taught them alot. All of the IVF eggs were heavily fragmented and so were discarded. However of the 6 ICSI eggs that had fertalised 1 was a grade 1 and the other 5 grade 2. We transfered 2 and 4 are in the deep freeeze. We are now 4 days into the dreaded 2ww but are keeping our fingers crossed. We were told that with ICSI there is a slightly higher chance of birth defects but the embiologist didn't think it was significant. It could be a question worth asking though.
This is obvioulsy only my own experience but in my case if we had only had IVF we would have only had some very bad embryios to play with and it is questionable if they would have been up to transfer. I think our consultant is going to work towards more cases of half and half where there are enough eggs. I would definately ask for that as it gives you the advantages of both methods.
