I have done CVS

Post by SASA »

I did chorionic villus sampling when I was 10 weeks pregnant. :?

When I had a routine checkup and ultrasound scan, my doc found that the nuchal fold of the foetus was thicker then normal. :( I did not do the blood test. My doc recommended CVS.

So CVS was performed. I understand that there was 1% risk of miscarriage. After CVS, I was fine and rested for two days. The preliminary test result came back the next day and my baby is normal. :D

My doc told me that since CVS is usually done in the first trimester, the early stage of pregnancy, some miscarriages that happened after CVS may not be due to CVS but the inherent defect of the foetus. He has some patients who had scheduled CVS and later called to cancel the appointment because miscarriage took place before CVS. :( Therefore, he said that the risk of CVS is in fact not higher than amniocentesis. His view was that CVS and amniocentesis in fact have similar risk.

Since my doc has over 20 years experience and can perform both CVS and amniocentesis, I trust his opinion and can see no reason for him to bias towards CVS. :o
Having said that, every doc and every individual is different, my doc may not be 100% correct. No medical procedure is 100% safe. There is always a risk in invasive procedures like CVS and amniocentesis.

Due to the various complications I am having, my cvs is scheduled for two weeks from Monday and I am really grateful for this techonology. I would like my babies to be healthy and if they can help us in anyway.. I am all for it.

I will let you all know how it goes.

MB and all of those considering CVS:

I have decided to do CVS as well. I am also grateful for technology and feel that it is the best decision for me after researching it. Mine is scheduled for this Tuesday. Will keep you posted too. SASA's story is also a positive one that I needed to hear. The doc doing mine is the only one who performs them at my hospital which increases the odds of her peforming a low risk procedure. Good luck and you will be in my thoughts too.

I will be thinking of you. How long do you have to wait for your results? They are usually a few weeks over here.

Hope all goes well, I'm sure you will let us know!

I will know in one week. I tend to take it easy the day of the procedure and then it's all in God's hands, not mine. Thanks for your thoughts.
