Hi there, unfortunately I can't help you with regards to treatment in Europe, but I am really surprised that you have been told that you are not entitled to your 2 NHS treatments if you have gone privately while you were waiting.

We self-funded our first treatment in July (which unfortunately was unsuccessful) and we are waiting to start again and luckily we have finally made it to the top of a long waiting list and it will be funded by the NHS. I think it is quite common for people to self-fund while they are on the waiting list.

Good luck with your research into treatment in Europe.

Dolly

Hi welcome to the site,I'm really suprised taht you've been told that you are not entilited to your nhs go.we have paid for ivf in June which failed,we are waiting to start FET in Oct which is self funded but during this time we have been on the nhs waiting list which we will be using early next year if the fet fails.
So you can pay for treatment and still be on the nhs waiting list.

Hope this is some help to you,I am at Jessops hospital in Sheffield.

Gem xx
Hi,

We were told the same thing if we self funded twice then we would not be able to get treatment on the NHS, I asked why and was told that if you could afford to fund it yourself then it was unfair for us to be on a waiting list of people who could not afford to fund it themselves, which kind of made sense at the time when they explained it.

Sorry don't know anything about treatment in Europe, but it sounds very hopeful.

Good luck
Lynne
Hi,

We were told that the main reason for NOT getting NHS treatment after going privatem is that 'if we have gone private twice and it has not worked, then the chances of success are more limited, and NHS funding goes to couples with most chance of success!'

Those of you who have opted to go private and wait on the list as well - I would double check with the NHS in your area. If your area is like ours and you have time on your side it may be better to wait, and go private if required, only after NHS treatment. We think it is disgusting to think we have to scrimp and save to pay for treatmnet privately only to be penalised by the NHS.

Apart from UK private treatment costs, one of the reasons I got to thinking about Europe is because if we get a copy of our file, the NHS would not necessarily have to know about out treatment abroad. Then if Europe is unsuccessful, the NHS would still be there as a fallback - all be it in two years by which time J will be 36 for her first NHS appointment. But at least we would still have that chance without remortgaging the house.

P
Hi P&J

I was very interested in your Europe idea as I had been thinking along those lines too. We have had one privately funded IVF attempt at Queen Mary's Roehampton which failed, and as I am nearly 39 I am not eligible for any NHS funded attempts, altho' my local health authority will fund my drugs for up to 3 attempts as long as my FSH level is within the accepted range and I am under 40. We are saving up for a second attempt.

We have a second home in France, which we use for holidays and I wondered about the possibility of having tmt there. I think it would be cheaper and they seem to have better success rates. I guess my thinking would be to combine a holiday with the tmt....it is just a case of how long a holiday would I need becos of work etc.

If I manage to find anything out about tmt options there I will let you know.

Good luck
Helen
Hi P&J

Don't know if this will be of any help/interest but I had my ivf treatment in a clinic in Germany. It was in Monchengladbach nr Dusseldorf. My husband is in the RAF and was based out there at the time, our options were to come back to the UK for private treatment or have it out there. As we lived about 20 mins from a clinic we decided to give it a go out there. We were quoted success rate of 38% and were told that many couples from all over Europe travelled to this particular clinic (including UK). Don't know how prices compare with the UK but it cost us roughly £3,000 for treatment and drugs. Anyway if you want to ask any more questions then feel free to e-mail me.
By the way, it was our first attempt and was successful. We had twin boys, Patrick and Michael, born in January 2003.

Good luck and best wishes

Linda
Like others I am suprised that you've been told what you have. We've self funded twice until we had our NHS 'turn' and have always been told that we had 3 NHS goes. In fact, we were told that on average it takes 3 attempts to suceed. We're in Edinburgh by the way, and they just changed their policy last April or so - it used to be only one NHS attempt. We paid about 2,400 for each of our treatments and that included everything.
Hope you get something sorted out. Good luck
Z x

Hi, a bit of a late reply I know, but anyway. We live in France and had treatment here - at the time we were not under the social security system here so payed full price which was about £2000 for drugs, blood tests, egg collection etc so a lot cheaper than the Uk. we were at Bordeaux university hospital, the rates quoted were the same as the uk. Our first attempt failed but our second worked and we now have a beautiful 6mth old baby boy. We found the staff extremely helpful, caring and efficient and there was no problem with us being british, although they were surprised we were paying ourselves.
good luck with everything.
love Wendy
