As far as I know, IUI requirement is more than 10m/cc.

Thanks alot, we're far from that! My dh has 100,000 (with no movement) but they think excessive alcohol the day prior to the test played a part in the amount, it's just hard to believe that cutting all alcohol and caffeine will bring it up to a normal count. People who drink beer and caffeine get their partners pregnant all the time. And he does have a 7 yr old from his previous marriage. Hopefully with the next two semen analysis we'll get some better news......
Thanks again

Well, if he has already produced a biological child previously, my gut feel is that diet is the biggest hindrance for him right now. Yes, alcohol, smoking and caffiene definitely affects a big role in the sperm numbers and quality. Myself has always been diagnoised for 2-3 million sperms/ml with less than 1% which are motile. I quit smoking and have been on healthy diet. The numbers remain the same, but the motility has increased. Our doctor recommended IVF with ICSI, as IUI will not work with these numbers. we went ahead with it . BUt the first cycle failed even though we had 3 embryos trasferred. Now, looking forward for a fresh IVF cycle in the month of Jan/Feb 07.

I have feeling that the effect of alcohol and smoking is different across various people and for ones (like us) we need to maintain a very strict diet and also give atleast 3 months before you see a difference in statistics. I know it's difficult to abstain from taking any of these for 3 months, but it is definitely worh taking a shot at.

Have your hubby considered taking some vitamin supplements? see another thread about vitamins, nothing wrong in taking those as well.

All the best

Hi Davesu,

Thanks for the advice/info. Well I'm hoping that the alcohol/caffeine is the reason, it just seems like I'm hoping for too much expecting 100,000 to go to any type of a normal count. I guess we're both just impatient (of course). I never imagined this would be a problem. His history though is lots of beer every weekend and monster drinks everyday. So he's doing great and I'm really proud of him, so our fingers our crossed :) .
We recently ordered proxeed (doctor's recommendation) and he has been alcohol/caffeine free and on the proxeed one month on November 1st. So, they want one sperm count November 7th and another in the beginning of January (that will be a total of 3 months on proxeed, caffeine and alcohol free).
I'm sorry to hear your first cycle failed, I'm not too familiar with all of the procedures quite yet but it seems if things don't improve we'll need the ICSI from what I've researched..... Is that done in a combo with IVF? I got a price quote of 15,500 for one cycle? Is that about right? The cost makes me so sad for everyone trying to conceive, some people will never be able to come up with all of the money this costs and its sad
I wish you and your wife the BEST of luck in 2007, hopefully you can have some good new years baby news :)
