Hello

Bridget I'm so sorry for your loss. I hope your sickness goes away soon. I've been so lucky I have never suffered from sickness.

Yes, I have been a type I diabetic for 5.5 years now. I have never been given calories to have each day just slow release carbohydrates and no sugar. I'm now on 294 units. You will probably find at around 28 weeks your insulin requirement will adjust if it doesn't beforehand.

Over here they do the gulcose test at 16 weeks and again at 28 weeks.

Rittie why did you have to have a second scan if you already had the nuchal fold?

The nuchal fold is a scan which will measure the fluid at the back of the baby's neck. They put the meaurements of this into the computer together with your age and the results of a blood test to see what the chances are of you having a down's baby. It is around 90% accurate whereas the blood test you are offered at 16 weeks is only about 66% accurate. If the results come back that you are at high risk then you are offered an amino or cvs if you wish to take it. The nuchal fold isn't offered over here so you have to go privately if you want one. There is only a few weeks that this scan can be performed something like 12 weeks and 3 days to 14 weeks and 2 days but I'm not sure of the exact dates.

Hi Angela how's the sickness? I hope it has eased for you. I was on the injections and the pessaries and was just told to come off them. I never came off slowly I just stopped. From reading on here I know that some people are weaned off them. I didn't even finish the packet, they told me 12 weeks and 12 weeks it was, not a day more!

Hope everyone is good. I have my scan tomorrow and I'm so excited. Will let you all know how it goes.

Take care

Jo

Bridget...

I found out I was diabetic before PG.....around March of this year. I was glad I found out because I went on the diabetic diet and lost 40lbs and felt great.....just in time for our 3rd IVF!!!

I know that there could be a million reasons why this time IVF worked, but I believe that I finally took control of my health...lost the weight...ate better...and prayed!!

Jo...thanks for the explanation of the nuchal scan.....

I am expecting to gain more weight next month and Dec because of Thanksgiving and all the baking in Dec :o

Hi to everyone from the 1st trimester thread - I haven't posted for a while (just been busy...and exhausted) but everything is going well. I had my NT scan today and the ultrasound measurements looked good - I have to call back tomorrow for the combined results with the blood tests but am hopeful given the NT result. But, I am still holding my breath until I get the formal results. It was so cool to see the baby moving around and looking like a real baby! My next ultrasound isn't until the 8th of December. DH is in Brazil and I am in DC doing some work training and don't go back to Brazil until the beginning of December so we are going to do the next one then to find out whether it is a boy or a girl.

I have gained a HUGE amount of weight considering that I am only 13 weeks, 1 day today. I am embarrassed to say this but I have gained about 25 pounds and don't really know why. I was pretty thin to begin with and was a runner (I am 5'7" and weighed about 116 pounds) but I just can't believe how big I am this early - I have been eating more but not enough to account for this. I haven't been able to run like I usually do som maybe that is why. I just hope I don't continue at this rate for the whole pregnancy.

I had a strange pregnancy-related incident today - I was trying to read an newspaper article and give a presentation and I couldn't see it to read! There were these little spots that were sort of like blank spots in my vision and then when I would look up there were these weird wavy lines in my peripheral vision and then I developed this terrible headache. I was a little alarmed but fortunately I had the ultrasound scheduled for later in the day so asked about it. After taking my blood pressure, they told me that it sounded like an "occular migraine". I told them I have never in my life had a migraine but apparently pregnancy can cause them. Has anyone else heard of this?? Very weird.

Glad to hear everyone has been doing well and look forward to following along!

Hi girls,

Pebbles, thank you for the excellent explanation of the Nuchal Fold Scan, I couldn't have done it better. I wanted to clarify that the second private scan is purely elective and I did it because a doctor friend convinced me (with my risk category - age, twins, PCOS etc) its worthwhile spending the little extra money to get a specialist doctor (as opposed to radiologist at NHS hospital) and more advanced equipment (than NHS) to pick up any problems as early as poss. It is a duplication and was for my own peace of mind.

The private scan provided a DVD and 3-4D pictures of the babies. Wow, it was even more amazing than the first set of pics (and I didn't even have to have to full bladder yippee!). And the professor yesterday was able to measure things that the hospital will do only at 20 weeks. He had re-checked the nuchal fold measurement and further reduced the risk of any chromosom problems and checked the heart has four chambers, size of the head, length of the thigh bone, told us the sex (shhhh, this will be kept quiet to the outside world till birth). So thats it, I'm stopping any background worrying I was doing and will allow ourselves to start looking at furniture, baby clothes etc. Girls I finally feel like I can breathe a breath of fresh air.

Just popped on quickly to give you an update. The midwife went ok this morning. I'm measuring 23 weeks already. The scan was ok. The baby's kidneys have excess fluid which needs to be moinitored, I have to have another scan in 8 weeks to check them again. They couldn't see the sex as the baby was laying in the wrong position. Was a little disappointed with the scan as the position of the monitor meant only the consultant and Paul could see anything, he didn't turn it round to show me a thing!

Sorry for no personals it's been a long day so I'm going for a cuppa!

Hope you are all well.

Speak soon

Jo, sorry you couldn't see the sex. That must have been disappointing. Please keep us posted on those kidneys!

Rittie, how cool for you to see the 3d/4d scan. And you got to see the sex so early, which is cool. Glad everything is going so well.

Claudia, I am sorry you have gained so much weight and you are uncomfortable. It looks like you were pretty tiny before, which probably has something to do with it. Have you had your thyroid checked? I have hypothyroidism, and have for years which means my metabolism is slow without help. You may want to have yours checked because a lot of women develop hypothyroidism during pregnancy, making them more exhausted and they gain more weight. Most women don't know to check theirs, I only know because I am already on medication. Good luck!

Hope everyone else is going well.

has anyone gotten information on how to sleep during second/third trimester? on your left side, right side etc.

Many have told me their doctors say not to sleep on your back because it keeps oxygen from circulating properly to the babies.

They say to sleep on your left side?

Any advice?

Hey Michelle,

It is funny you brought this up. I have been having trouble sleeping throught the night for a few days now, and I find that I am constantly uncomfortable. It is scary since I am only 13.5 weeks and I have a long way to go!

I did some web-research and mostly found that it is ok to sleep on either side, just not on your back later in pregnancy. The back is because of the weight of the uterus pushing on all of the other organs. It also prevents blood circulation. Some things say not to sleep on the right side, but others say that is a myth.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to make things more comfortable in bed? Is anyone having trouble sleeping?

Hi Michelle and Lucyluna,

I too have been having trouble with sleeping. Either not being able to find a comfortable position to fall asleep in. But more often I'll wake in the middle of the night and not be able to sleep for hours. I've been experiencing this since much earlier on in pregnancy. And would appreciate any tips to help improve things. Are you two showing yet? My bump has been feeling very heavy the last few days :-)

Hi girls

I read a while a go that a pillow between your legs and one under your bump really helps, and also to lie on your left side. I had OHSS early on in my pregnancy and found that this technique took alot of the pain away. I still get nights though when I wake about 4am and can't go back to sleep. This makes me really tired in the morning and then the sickness is worse. We can't win can we.

hey ladies....

Ritte.....thought I wasn't showing...only bloated. But one of my coworkers touched my upper stomach and said "No honey...your showing!" "Guess everything is being pushed up from the babies. I have had frequent headahces over the past couple of weeks. Have any of you?

Also, can't sleep at night. I will wake up a@ 3:30 and can't sleep again. The time change on Sat here in the states didn't help either.

Talk to you guys soon!

Have another reg oBgyn appointment today! (Hope they do a scan)

Michelle, Rittie and Angela,

It is the same for me too. I wake up and can't get back to sleep. It is horrible. I can't get comfortable then, and I feel achey. I am showing a bit, I have a pot belly. It isn't like my belly needs support, it is just bigger. I am finding my upper back and neck are getting really sore at night.

My headaches have increased over the past couple of week too. I see a nutritionist and she said it is blood sugar. She said my blood sugar drops in the afternoons, which is usually when I get the headaches. Try to eat a snack in between lunch and dinner and see if that helps.

Rittie, I had a couple of days where I thought my belly was getting heavier. I am sure it is nothing compared to yours with twins in there!

Let us know how your appointment goes Michelle. Good luck :D

I'm glad you girls brought this up. Sleeping is about the only issue I'm having now. While I can finally make it through the night without running to the bathroom (maybe once now but no more), I'm having pain and discomfort. My hips have been hurting when I get up because of the extra weight I guess and I've been having back pain through the night when I try to flip to the other sore hip. Flipping myself is already a challenge...this is going to be a long pregnancy. I am normally a side / stomach sleeper so it has been hard transitioning to only sleeping on my sides. I was already overweight so that didn't help any.
My lower back hurts during the day. I read something that said to walk with your shoulders forward to avoid the pain and it does help, but it's hard to walk that way when you naturally want to bend back due to the bump.
This is all minor I know but I am a little fearful of being able to keep mobile later in the pregnancy if I am already feeling this way at 13.6 weeks. Hopefully this is just growing pains and will pass...
I am so glad to hear that everyone is doing well! I'll be going for a level 2 u/s the week after Thanksgiving. Hopefully we'll see what we've got in there!
Take care,
Dione

Hi all you lovely ladies out there. Hope everyone OK today. I've only been away a short time but loads of fab news to catch up on.

Angela, I too was worried about stopping the progesterone rather than cutting down before stopping completely. My clinic reassurred me that this was Ok...and it was! I'm sure you will be fine too. Hope your scan went well and the sickness subsides soon. When is your next appointment?

Jo, glad midwife appointment went Ok. How silly not letting you see the screen for your scan..........hope all continues OK and the kidneys sort themselves out! Have you decided to find out the sex of your baby or will you wait for the supprise?

Sarali, I don't know much about baby movement but from what I have read most first time mums don't feel anything until around 18-20 weeks. Hopefully your sickness will subside soon and you can enjoy being pg! Good luck with your scan on Thursday.

Michelle, how was the scan today? Hope all went well. I have read all the posts about sleeping problems. My midwife told me that it doesn't matter which side you sleep on. She also said that lying on your back could cause you to pass out! Heh, something else to look forward to !!! When is your baby due?

Rittie, how are you? Hope you are sleeping better. How was your scan? Hope everything OK. When is your next appointment?

Rileydee, hi bump buddy, how are you? Are you showing yet? My colleagues at work say I am but I just think I look like I've put on a bit of weight! Hope you are Ok. Have you a scan booked soon?

Dione, sorry to see you are in such discomfort. Has the Dr had any suggestions? When is your scan...the waiting never ends does it? Will you find out the sex of the baby?

Lucy, sorry to see about your headaches. Can you take any painkillers?Hopefully the change in your eating habits will sort them out.

Hello to Wendy and Bridget, hope you are Ok.

Our list, sorry for mistakes

Lucy, one plum :D nxt scan 21st Nov Due 2nd May
Anna, one beanie :D nxt scan 23rd Nov Due 9th April

As for me, we heard the heartbeat last week which was fab. Have finally begun to relax and enjoy being pregnant. We also spent alot of time last week sharing our news with friends and family. Everyone was soooo thrilled for us.
I also met with my consultant today. She was lovely, the appointment was fine but she did talk an awful lot about donor eggs, elective cesaereans (spelling!) and older mums. She has marked my medical file with 'HIGH RISK' on the front....rather alarming!! Next scan not for a while yet but can't wait to see our beanie again.

Hugs to all here, good luck with upcoming scans and appointments. If anyone wants to add dates to the list please do so...
Bye for now
