1st failed IVF - considering adoption

Post by bekkie31 »

Hi there. My first IVF failed - just received the news and I wonder if I have the strength to go on.

I am thinking to adopt a child, and the to continue to try to conceive naturally too (if that happens it happens, if not then atleast we have a child and there is no pressure then to think we will end up without one). There must be someone here who has adopted. If so what were the costs? and how much travelling was involved? and how long did it take. I am just lost looking on internet pages and do not know where to start!!!

Hi Bekkie

I too had a failed 1st attempt in September and am considering adoption. We are hoping to have one more go at IVF in January but have been told that the chances of it working a pretty slim. I have lots of problems with Endometriosis but won't bore you with that.

I don't know whether you are in the UK but its National Adoption Week this week and there are lots of seminars going on around the country. We went to one last year and it was really informative. Have a look on the BAAF website or contact your local authority if you are in the UK and they should be able to point you in the right direction.

Good luck!

Hi guys

Bekki and Ems. Yes there are people on this forum who have adopted - I am one of them! We adopted Jessie last November from China at 13 months old. She is now two and chatting away. I honestly believe that this was our destiny as she is absolutely wonderful.

It took us 23 months from first contacting social services (the month after our second ICSI failed) to picking her up (though I believe the timescales are now slightly longer, but it depends which country you go for). We spent two weeks in China and the majority of the money was money spent on the trip out there. I think we paid around £2500 to social services here for our homestudy and a donation of US$3000 to the orphanage in China.

If you are interested you need to contact your local social services and ask about inter country adoption. There is also an organization called OASIS which you can join and they can provide info on steps ect. The website is www.overseasadoption.org.uk

Hi Becky

Wow! What a happy story. Whereabouts in Kent are you? I live in Sittingbourne but work in Canterbury.

We are having one last crack at IVF after Xmas and if that fails I think we'll head down the road to adoption. Can I ask, what made you decide to adopt from China? Its something I have thought about a lot. Were there reasons you decided not to adopt from the UK?

Sorry to ask questions but I'm really interested in this and would love as much info as poss!

Love
