Help!!!Should I transfer 4 embies?

Post by rhaynes »

Hi, I had ER on Saturday. 10 eggs, 5 fertilized. I am scheduled for ET on Tuesday (3 day transfer) I found out today 3 are good and 2 are average.

I am 40 years old. This is my second and last chance at IVF. My clinic WILL NOT transfer 5 but, because of my age, they will transfer 4. I am so scared and nervous about how many to transfer. 3 or 4? I know the percentage rate of women my age having multiples is really low but am so confused as to how many to put back 3 or 4. My husband wants to go for the 4. His logic is 4 to 1 odds is better than 3 to 1. I am thinking Oh Lord, can we handle triplets, is that healthy, what about quads?????

Does anybody out there have any helpful advice??

Rhaynes, the main thing here is whether you would agree on going for a reduction later in case 4 or 3 take, if you are not willing at all to go for a reduction then you should be carefull because when more than 2 take there is more than 50% chances of m/c from what I know. But if you are willing to go for a reduction then I would definetly go for all 4 since this is your last chance from what you are saying and you don't know if you will be able to freeze them either....
Hope it helps!!!!! and GOOD LUCK!!!!

Hi Rhaynes

Wow I feel for you. I just wanted to tell you that I'm 40 also and just had my first IVF. I had 16 eggs and 9 embryos. They transferred 3 into me and we were gonna freeze the other 6. The three transferred ones were 5, 5 and 6 cells. Not one single embryo out of the nine made it though.

I too was concerned about having triplets and freaking out a little bit. When (hopefully) I do my 2nd IVF, if they suggest transferring 4 into me, I'm thinking that I might go for it. I will be 41 by then also.

Sorry I'm not much help. Good luck to you :!: :!: :!:

Hi Rhaynes,
its hard isnt it ... just wanted to add i am 38 years young and had 4 embies last cycle 1x 8 cell 3 x 6cell 3 grade 1 (excellent) 1 grade 2 very good...at the time i knew the risks of maybe ending up with quads and although i would not have a reduction i was aware that this would be both risky and a challenge should i concieve all of them...as it happens none of mine took and i plan on doing the same thing for my next cycle transfere all viable embies... the choice has to be yours but consider what you would do should they all take...and go from there.

wishing you luck and a healthy twin pregnancy

I would transfer the 4 of them. The chances of 4 taking are slim. I am doing as many as I can next cycle as I have had 3 failed attempts. They said I could get 3 or 4 next time. I am 35, and if they give me the option of 4 I am taking it.
Good Luck...

Hey

I understand your worries. I was 23 (and very healthy, problems are with DH) for my first cycle and did not know nothing about IVF. I had 3 embies put back and none survived. At the time I did not realise that all 3 could have taken and have triplets.

I also would try the 4, there are slim chances that all will take...
This is a hard decision and I wish you all the luck in the world

I am 34 and am now pregnant with a singleton after transferring 5 embies in May this year. I know just how you feel - worried about multiples or reduction.... All you can do is wiegh up the pros and cons carefully, make your decision, and mentally stick to it - don't beat yourself up after its too late to go back, whatever you decide. I knew that if I didn't transfer 5 and then got a negative, I would always think I had made a terrible mistake.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Hi I'm having my FET on Friday and we have 4 frosties left, if all 4 of them survive the thawing we will be putting all 4 back.

This is my last attempt and i'm only putting the 4 back based on my previous cycles.

One fresh cycle - 25 eggs retrived, 15 fertilised, 2 put back, 13 frozen, BFN.

FET1 - 3 defrosted put back 2 BFN.

FET2 - 6 defrosted put back 3 BFN.

FET 3 got 4 frosties if all survive, putting all back.
Tune in 1st Dec to find out if it worked........

By the way i'm 35, We considered the fact of triplets, but didn't mind the more the merrier.

I haven't even considered the chance of quads as i think i will be lucky to get a singleton.

Good luck to you....
Sending you loas of baby dust

Thank you to all of you for telling your stories. We went ahead and transferred back 4. I had a chance to talk to the doctor beforehand which caused me to change my mind.

My pregancy test is Nov. 27. Thank you all again.
