nail and hair care question

Post by wannababy1229 »

Hi ladies. I thought this question would be most appropiately asked over here. I'm not officially posting over here yet as it is still very early. With God's blessings, I will be over here in a few weeks!

What's the deal with haircoloring/highlights during pregnancy? I am in desperate need of doing one or the other and wanted to know if anyone had any info on whether or not it was safe. Also, what about nail care? I have silk wraps on my nails and I know that my manicurist uses some kind of powder (not acrylic). Is this safe? I want to look good, but the health and development of my baby is my number 1 priority. Any info regarding this is welcomed. Thanks so much!

I think there are mixed opinions on both of these issues.

I personally am going without any hair coloring or highlighting even though the grey is comming through. Just to be safe.. But lots of people do it. I don't have nails ( other then my own) so I can't comment on that, but I know the smell it self is awful!

Good luck to you!

I've always coloured my hair when pregnant. I have already done it three times with this pregnancy although I did wait until the second trimester. I think the problem is really because your hair changes when you are pregnant you may not get your usual colour. Perms are not usually recommended as they tend not to take when pregnant.

I don't know about nails but I'm sure your beautician would know what's safe in pregnancy.

I think it is a personal preference.

Congratulations on your BFP!

Hi - I've actually read and heard that it's not a good idea to do either. The hair dye gets into your skin through your scalp and the chemicals then get into your blood system. The nail polishes/solvents have VOCs (Volatile Organic Compouonds) in them and they get into your system through smelling them and can effect hormonal changes. That's why it's not a good idea to paint anything either that has a strong odor or high VOCs - definitely don't do that yourself! Paint can be found however with zero VOCs. There is a good book called The Complete Organic Pregnancy by Dolan and Zissu and a good website called Children's Health Environmental Coalition (checnet.org) which have a lot of info about these things.
I hope this is helpful!

Hi again....okay, I also read that if you really want to do something for the hair than highlights are better than dye because they don't actually touch the scalp as much. But be sure to be in a well ventilated area. That's what I read. It can all get to be a lot I know and my gray hair is driving me nuts. Oh well.
Best wishes to you,
Mazy :)
