Bad eggs?

Post by cjcraig »

Just had a result from 1st go at IVF - had 4 follicles - ER gave 3 eggs but all failed to fertilise. Embriologist said they looked a bit dark, what ever that means (moody?!).
Anyway - spoke to doctor today who was quite pessimistic. Said I might get better eggs next time but unlikely.
Have recovered from 'devestated', though still on the sad side.
What do you think?
I'm at the ARGC - can I be paranoid and say they might try to put me off trying IVF again because they don't want bad results...or are they actually being very ethical?
Would be grateful for your thoughts...

no - it was always going to be a possibility but when they saw the sample they said IVF would do the trick. They are sure it's 'an egg problem..'

How old are you? From what I understand sometimes they can get better quality eggs simply by doing a different protocol. Maybe try a second opinion? Also, I would def. insist on ICSI. I'm no doctor, but ICSI is a no-brainer. It almost guarentees fertilisation. I had 18 eggs and with ICSI 16 fert.

you have a 3 and a 1/2 year old daughter so yours eggs have been good enough quality recently.

Was there anything you were doing differently 3 years ago?

Thanks for your help..
I'm 37 (DH 40). I thought ICSI was useful if there was a sperm problem and wouldn't be helpful for imature / bad eggs but I'll ask the doc at my follow up appt.
Our daughter was conceived whilst living the high life in NY - you know, out every night, working mad hours...alcohol, crap diet etc...Whereas now we are teetotal and taking it easy. I've even stopped work as IVF at the ARGC is a full time job.
Has anyone had bad eggs on one cycle then gone onto produce beauties on another cycle?

CJ: Someone I know at my clinic has done IVF 3 times..and this current time she had the highest grade/cell embryos from all 3 times..She is the same age as you. I think sometimes the protocol can effect embryos too. DId they tell you what grade/cell your embies are?

cjcraig,

Yes, with my first IVF, they thought I had 10 follicles in there, then when egg retrieval came, there were only 2 bad quality eggs (dark, grainey, etc). The Dr called me after I got home from egg retrieval and was recommending not to even go ahead with trying to fertilize (not worth the money). We decided to go ahead with it (were planning on ICSI) and both fertilized. We ended up with one 10cell grade one and 4 cell grade 4. It didn't work, and they Dr did not give us much hope. Said basically the same thing-may get a few more if we upped the meds, but not too optimistic. I then talked to a Dr at another clinic (who knew me as he worked at my other clinic when I had my DD through IUI's) and he gave me much more hope, had more changes that he thought would do the trick for me. He thought I was over suppressed using the lupron and needed more meds and different combination of meds. So, I changed clinics and on my first one, got 19 mature eggs, 10 fertilized. The 2nd time I went through them, got 22 mature eggs and 17 fertilized. Both time they were decent quality eggs-not the dark grainey ones. He said that if your suppressed too much, they eggs that you do get can be bad quality but it doesn't mean that is how most of your eggs are. So, don't loose hope. I'm not pregnant yet and in process of doing a frozen cycle in a couple of weeks, but still have hope.

When my egg quality was immature, my doctor put me on metformin. It helped because I conceived on the next try. There are side effects to the meds though. But not to harm the embryos When going in, I ensure that the hands that help conception are blessed hands from God, as well. Faith is the key to all success. Pray!
