Severe Morning sickness....when to get help?

Post by Xrayem »

Hi I am pregnant with twins after my first IVF cycle and I have been suffering terrible morning sickness. From weeks 6 to 9, I was just nauseous all day and night but this last week I have started vomitting as well. I am vomitting up half of what I eat and drink which isn't much as I am too nauseous to eat or drink much.

What I need to know is, at what point do I seek help from my Obs? I have tried every natural remedy known to man and I am starting to regret ever going through this in the first place. I am feeling very weak and headachy, so I have to be dehydrated. How do I know what is normal for a twin pregnancy and what is dangerous for my babies?

I am eating half of what I did before I was pregnant and then vomitting up a large proportion of that. Is this normal?

Thank you for your help,
Em

Hey Em

I am sorry you are going through this. Sickness is usually worth when carrying twins... And yes, it is normal to eat less, because you dont feel like it, and many women actually loose weight in the first trimester because of nausea. But if you feel weak and dehydrated, I would advise you to see your doc. Hopefully the sickness will go soon (from week 12/13 but sometimes the sickness continues a bit further that) and I know it sounds far away, but I am sure that soon you will enjoy your pregnancy !!

Take care

Em,

Call your doctor and get a prescription for Zofran! It is very safe to take during pregnancy and really, really helps. I got some this week when I started throwing up Wednesday.

There is no reason for you to suffer and you need to eat. It sounds like you might be getting hyperemesis gravidarum. Some morning sickness is normal, but too much and you can get dehydrated and your electrolytes get out of balance. You can end up in the hospital on IV fluids if things get really bad. We usually have one or two pts with this condition on our floor.

Promise me you will call your doctor. I don't want you to be posting from your hospital bed!

P.S. It's good to hear from you! I found out I'm having boys. A bit of a shock as I was convinced they were girls, but DH is happy. I did the cvs genetic testing, due to my age, that's how we found out so early.

I know this post is a few weeks old, but wanted to tell you about my experience.
I had hyperemsis and ended up in hospital on a drip for 5 days. It got to the point when I was vomitting 5 or more times a day and not eating or drinking a thing. I had got myself dehydrated which makes you feel sick in itself. I'd been to my GP and they were to be honest cr*p. They just go 'oh dear you look a bit pale'. In the end I made an appt with the community midwife who took one look at me and got me admitted. The hospital was really cross I'd left it so late and got dehydrated too.

So my advice is, ring your antenatal unit directly and ask to speak to a midwife. Bypass your GP. And don't leave it too long so that you get dehydrated. You get better quicker if you go in earlier. Also, check your weight. I lost a stone in two weeks, so knew it was bad.

I resisted anti sickness medication for a while, but in the end got a Maxalon prescription which I take on really, really bad days. I am still being sick at 14 weeks, but it's much better. It does get better honest.

Hope you are doing ok

I was sick and vomitting all day from about weeks 8 through 14. My dr. prescribed declectin, which didn't stop everything but helped alot. Don't suffer and wait, I ended up in the hospital twice on IV fluids, you need to take care of those babies, and you. And hopefully with meds/ and or time you start to feel better. The second tri is always much better.

I threw up all day and night starting from week 7 and still would today if not for medication from my dr. I take Zofran and it works wonders. I am on a very small dose, it is safe for you to take while pregnant. If I didn't have it, I don't know how I would have made it through this far. Ask your dr. about it.
