Number of eggs decreases with number of IVF's??

Post by Blinky »

Hi everybody,

I was on my second IVF but due to not enough follicles, we decided to switch to IUI. On the first IVF I produced 7 eggs, on the second one and with the highest medications I only produced 5. I know that I am a poor responder to medications, that is related to the ovarian reserve. I would like to know from those who had more than one IVF's (good or poor responders) if the number of follicles/eggs retrieved decreased with the number of IVFs. I really hope that is not the case, and hope in the following IVFs i will be able to produce more, but would like to know from your experience.

Any advice would be very hopeful...
Thanks a lot!!!

Well my first IVF yielded 19 follicles with 6 going on to become embryo's.... My second IVF resulted in 21 follicles with 12 going on to blastocytes. After transferring 3 at our fresh transfer , 6 went on to freezing. So to answer your question, the number of follicles did not decrease with my second attempt. Hope this info helps and good luck.

blinky: i am sorry to hear you have had a rough go of it. To answer your question... i will list my "stats"

#1 IVF/ICSI; 7 retrieved, 4 fert, none grew to blast
#2 IVF/ICSI: (more aggressive protocol) 6 retrieved, 5 fert, 2 "ok blasts, no implant after ET
#3 IVF/ICSI (mdl flare protocol) 16 retrieved, 12 ferts (all frozen after fert)

As you can see, i wasn't responding well to a more aggressive "standard" protocol, but did well w/mdl flare (not everyone does, some people do much better on the "standard" than the mdl). But i guess my point is, that just because you haven't responded as well as you would have liked up to this point, doesn't mean it won't happen (in my humble opinion  ). A good RE will learn from our previous cycles and hopefully find a protocol which bring us success. I hope this gives you hope!

So did you just do an IUI? If so, good luck!!!

Dear all,

Thank you very much for all your messages, it really gives me hope that I will still have some eggs to retrieve in the following cycles. So far, the IVF that was converted to IUI did not work, and I am now waiting to start a new IVF. My doctor decided not to put me under contraceptive pills this time, but the medications will be the same as last IVF (the highest dose of Gonal F).

Sassynlv you mentioned the mdl flare protocol, could any of you explain me what this is about? what is the difference with the other protocols?

Thank you very much again and hope this year our dreams will come true...I really hope so.

blinky: I am sorry to hear about your IUI, but am glad to hear you are "getting back on the horse" and will be doing IVF again. A while ago, ghost was kind enough to PM me info on the flare protocol that i found to be very helpful, although too long to post here. So i am pm'ing you w/the info. good luck!

Sassynlv: Thank you very much for the information you sent me about the flare protocol. My RE did not want to change the protocol for this IVF, i started medications yesterday, the only difference with the other IVFs is that this time I did not take contraceptive pills, so hope that will help. If not, I will need to talk more with my RE about the mdl flare protocol.

Good luck with your FET on the 25th!!!

erica1976, Angellica, and AuntyPebbles, thank you very much for sharing your stats with me. it really helps and gives hope, which is something that we really need a lot!

All the best to all of you,
