query re huge number of eggs

Post by beckym »

Just wanted to find out if anyone else has had a large quantity of eggs. I had 27 last cycle (and got ohss - at a previous clinic) and 31 this cycle today- am worried as although have a lot, last time did not have any embies to freeze as quality not good enough. seems I get quantity not quality. last time did not get past a 5 cell on day 3. The rest were 3 and 4 cell. Think i'd rather have it the other way round and not risk ohss. anyone else had the same thing? is this a bad thing? do I have PCOS or something? othersiders, anyone got pregnant with this many? beckym xxx

Hi Becky, another Becky here (and my surname begins with M too!)

Our stories are kind of similar, so for what it's worth . . .:
I DO have PCOS, and was on minimum dose of stims when I cycled in July. I ended up with 33 follies, but not quite such a bumper crop of eggs as you - I got 12 - lots of my follies were therefore empty, and it wasn't too much of a surprise, as some of them were cysts from before the cycle (they said no amount of buserelin would shrink them completely and not to worry. But of course I did!)

Of the 12 eggs, 10 were injected (we're ICSI) and 7 fertilised - but they were variable quality and like you we were told no embies were freezable. I was also told my eggs looked a bit immature because of the PCOS, so we felt a bit dejected. HOWEVER, I had 2 lovely embies put back (5 & 6 cell at day 2) and am now nearly 17 wks pg with one baby.

I ended up with OHSS, though nowhere near as badly as you, but it didn't kick in until about a week after I'd tested (and again for luck about 10 days later) - I spent time on a drip but luckily no fluid on the lungs, just worst abdo pains ever.

Ramble ramble, but what I'm trying to say is, please don't get too hung up on the quantity/quality thing. We all say it I know, but it only takes one and it could be your time! Keep at that water (my sympathies, I was sloshing when I walked!)

Best of luck, Beck x

Hi Becky,

I have PCOS and mild endo and on my last cycle got 29 eggs. I'd had some extra drug which matured them and ended up with 9 blastos, of which 7 were frozen, so you should be ok. Sadly none of them wanted to stick, so I'm now looking into immunological issues for my next cycle.

Good luck

Karen
xx
